Our mail bag has overflowed with new tunes this month. Out of procrastination excuses and with the e-mail piling up, we took a deep breath, steadied our nerves and went postal. To our surprise there's some really good stuff in there. A few of these artists we already knew about, but many are flying below the radar. From now one, we'll make it a regular feature to share the mailbag goods. Check out the tracks below and let us know who you like, so can get more material on them in the future. [...]
Just when you think that commercial pop music couldn't get any more pretentious, preening or pathetically pompous, along comes Flight of the Conchords , that lovably goofy New Zealand duo that has basically de-pantsed, hilariously we might add, the stagnant and mindless beast known fondly as "the pop music industry." When their tale of a fledgling and hopelessly inept musical duo first aired on HBO, the Conchords' peculiar brand of folk/rock shenanigans had a brainy comic appeal that the poor saps at SNL could only dream of. But the Grammy winning Bret McKenzie (guitar and vocals) and Jemaine Clement [...]
![[onmp129] Zero V – Fluidity (2009)](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1990793_lg.jpg)
Mixing drones and soundscapes, Zero V creates a number of siren songs on Fluidity that shimmer like light reflected on the water's surface. The minimalist musician has gained some attention with the piece "Stones"; featured here, it reveals the unhurried and unfolding nature of Zero V's melodies. The opening "Fluidity" is the musical equivalent of a meditation session, it's initially lovely, yet the soothing arrangement saps the piece of its spellbinding effect before long. The last piece composed here, "Toned," is also the most uptempo, foreshadowing the warmth and presence that appears on this [...]

And now for a list of artists you won't get to see at CMJ anyway because your (really expensive) badge ain't worth shit, and you poor saps with bracelets? HA! You might as well wave an MTA bus transfer at the bouncer. Should you feel brave and plucky, however, here is a list of artists and bands you might get to watch at CMJ 2009 in New York. Emphasis on might. You might see them if you get to the venue three hours early and spike your glass of soda to stave off the boredom/horror brought [...]

Rejoice, indie saps aching for further combinations of the Cure and My Bloody Valentine ! The Pains of Being Pure at Heart has two releases in the pipeline guaranteed to make your September just a little bit more awkwardly danceable. On September 8, the band will release album track "Come Saturday" as a single, with a new song, "Side Ponytail," serving as a B-side. Two weeks later, on September 22, Higher Than the Stars , an EP featuring four brand new songs, will hit stores. Both will be released via Slumberland . [...]

(photos from the mountains and area surrounding a volcano in Indonesia) From Jakarta we ride into the mountains to climb a volcano. Not a very relaxing way to start a trip: - If they don't have exact small change at the quickie mart, they give you a little piece of candy instead. - New euphemism for a "special friend" = live blanket. - Seeing traditional muslim head scarves being sold next to t-shirts with Avril Lavigne on them. - Sitting in an alley eating gado gado from a street vendor while a stray cat takes a [...]

Words By Patrick M. You can't question the fact that Mos Def is one of the most talented emcees in the game. You can, however, question his commitment to Hip-Hop over the last five years. The lucrative opportunities offered to Mos on big and small screen have been too much for him to pass up. But you can't take without giving something up, and what has suffered has been Mos' musical career. 2006's True Magic was panned for its lack of cohesion and consistency, the work of a [...]
Cam'ron's sixth album finds the rapper supported by flimsy production that saps him of his vitality.
A long car trip today afforded the chance to conduct a listening experiment that pitted Green Day's breakout disc, 1994's Dookie, against the new 21st Century Breakdown. The quick takeaway: 21CB is a good, remarkably solid sounding disc from a slick band, the kind of group that the Dookie- era trio likely would have crossed the street to spit on. In 1994, I probably listened to Dookie every day for several months. It was everything I wanted at the time: soaring pop hooks driven by loud guitars, inventive bass [...]
I know I typically talk about music of the electronic and hip hop variety but I do really enjoy well done Rock and Pop music. Phoenix has been a favorite been band of mine mixing the right amount of rock and pop for my tastes. Their new record Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix which I am certain you have read at nauseum about is really one of their best. They have had stand out tracks before but beginning to end this record shines. Since any official song would probably get this post shut down in a [...]

On this semi-cover (Cover remix? R&B freestyle? Swag swipe?) of "Day N Nite" , Sammie , otherwise-known-as the late nineties' "new young Michael Jackson" or highlight of "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" , saps the Cudi record of it's unique "lonely stoner" perspective and transforms it into a more traditional, modern-day sex jam, complete with obligatory Patrón endorsements and R. Kelly shout-outs and lyrical images of "nasty" girls who have sex with their high heels on. While it's definitely a blander alternative to the original, we have to admit, if we had [...]
Hurray for All Tomorrow's Parties! I wasn't too excited about the Breeders lineup this year I must say, I kind of wished I had been to the vs the Fans one. But hey, sometimes it's nice not to have pressure to watch tons of bands. You can just hang out and get binned on red wine in the chalet playing Kate Bush very loudly, which may or may not have happened. Anyway, here is a little run down of what we did when we weren't doing Kate Bush dancing Friday [...]

Starting off "The Revelry" with an Offspring-influenced opening, California's Bullets and Octane seem immediately tagged for success alongside the aforementioned act, as well as Authority Zero and earlier hair-metal acts like Lizzy Borden and Twisted Sister. The mastering is perfect on this disc and as such saps Bullets and Octane's fury, placing them entirely within [...]
