One of my favorite songwriters of the past several years has been pretty active the past few months and I just realized that I had failed to make mention of him here on the blog. Alex Brown Church has been making some of the best and most inspired indie rock music under the pseudonym Sea Wolf. I highly recommend his 2007 debut, Leaves in the River. But today I want to point you to what he has been up to in 2009. First he offered up a free sample, with the single "Stanislaus", to give us [...]

[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. ... Here's what's on my weekend radar, for one reason or another — for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene :] Tonight: It's Week 2 of Julian Casablancas' flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]
Just in time for halloween, here's Sea Wolf's costume-rific video for Wicked Blood (why exactly hasn't this album gotten reviewed by P4K yet?). And i think i just found my halloween costume. Two words: Austonaut-Monster. Related: Review: Sea Wolf, Port O'Brien, Sara Lov @ Talking Head 10/18/09 Sea Wolf: "Wicked Blood" Stream, Tour Dates Sea Wolf: New Album, MP3

I got tipped off to a fine rock show scheduled for this Friday night at Modified (PHX) featuring songstress Sara Lov and DIY indie folker cool guy Alex Church (aka Sea Wolf ), who's promoting his new CD ' White Water White Bloom '. All Music Guide writes : "Much like Iron & Wine and similar indie outfits, Sea Wolf is the project name of a sole singer/songwriter who drafts in other musicians as the occasion warrants. That singer/songwriter is Alex Church, a California native who looks to local authors [...]
Alex Brown Church brings Sea Wolf to Modified on Friday , a day before Halloween, which makes this new video for Wicked Blood – the leadoff track on the album White Water, White Bloom – all the more timely. Delivered in black-and-white, the visuals play out like some beauty and the beast tale, set against the backdrop of a haunted cemetery. We can only hope ABC's band plays Friday in those skeleton suits. Reminder: Port O'Brien is one of the openers ( Sara Lov is the other), [...]

Zaireeka 12th Anniversary Party ( Good Records ): This is an actual Halloween Party with a costume contest and everything, and I'm pretty sure I'll be more than sick of writing about Halloween-themed shows by the end of the week. This holiday has seriously gotten worse and worse over the years, making Fall even more seasonally bloated and drawn out than the original offender, Christmas; there are parties for about three weeks solid, exploiting Dia De Los Muertos into becoming some shitty Halloween Hangover Day (Parts One and Two), and to top it all off, some clubs have [...]
A great show stops off at The Cavern tonight as Sea Wolf, Port O'Brien and Sara Lov pop through town on tour. All in all, a fine touring bill, but the real highlight here is Sea Wolf, as Roy Kast... Continue reading "Giveaway: Two Pairs of Tickets to Tonight's Sea Wolf Show at The Cavern" >

Sara Lov photo by Helena P. (The Earl) New writer and local artist Sara Wood writes, "This was our first trip to The North Star Bar.....As soon as we arrived (about an hour and a half after doors) we kitted ourselves out with some Woodchuck cider , and heard just a little bit of the first opener of the night, Sara Lov . Sara had a sweet, and very juvenile voice, but I have to be honest: I was more attracted to her pretty t-shirt designs over on the merch table. As [...]

This past sunday i headed down to The Talking Head to check out Sea Wolf and was surprised with a couple solid opening sets by Port O'Brien and Sara Lov . The night started out a bit delayed as the sound check was still going on well after doors were supposed to be opened, so the crowd just hung out in the lovely talking head alley in hopes of staying out of the way of whatever death metal fest was going on next door at sonar. [...]

Sea Wolf , the California indie group whose sweet and thoughtful ballads have won over the hearts of many across the land, put on a thoroughly calming yet magnificently entertaining show last night at the Paradise Rock Club. Singer/songwriter Alex Church was accompanied by a five-piece band (which included a mini-cello of sorts played by Aniela Perry, see photos below), that nicely complimented his oftentimes solo act. The band recently released their second full length album, "White Water, White Bloom," recorded in the infamous Mike Mogis studio in Omaha. Way back when in a time called 2007, [...]
