So let's get some full disclosure out of the way right off the bat: I've liked The Album Leaf for a long time. Whether I've ever been an Album Leaf fan, however, is another question. In fact I'd say I haven't. Not really, anyway. Not in the sense that I buy anything Jimmy LaValle puts out, or that I keep a lookout for similar artists. My interest has never run quite that deep. I did hold out some hope, though, that Friday night might change all that. With the Anomie Belle String Quartet lending a hand [...]
Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age , Vivian Girls , Best Coast , Graham Forest , Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast 's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. [...]

Today, I fly out to Honolulu to see my brother. While I'm out there I'll be seeing Andrew Bird at the Pipeline Cafe and trying to see what kind of music scene #50 has to offer. I'll be checking in from time to time but don't expect that much updates. If you're in the Bay Area this week though, check out Daedelus , Nosaj Thing , and Jogger at the Mighty tonight, St. Vincent and Wildbirds & Peacedrums at at the Great American Music Hall and Editors [...]

...I think there's some snow coming—anybody hear anything? (I kid.) But if you're reading us from anyplace outside of the DC/Baltimore area, that header's right—we're getting two feet of snow at minimum. (Which is fine with me. I got some records to listen to.) We're closing shop a bit early today but make sure you're back here on Monday when we kick off our Record Store Day [...]

DOWNLOAD: The Album Leaf - Falling from the Sun (MP3) The Album Leaf... A Chorus of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio just outside of Seattle. It was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson. Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album Into the Blue Again was recorded. There is, however, one fundamental difference [...]

Mia Kirby Sea Wolf , the Los Angeles-and occasionally local, if gossip serves me right-pop act is playing a free, 94.7-sponsored "New Music Heaven" show right this very second. Well, not exactly right now, but at 6pm. The show is 21+ (sorry kids) and at the Woods. Go. Now. LISTEN: Sea Wolf - "Wicked Blood" [ Subscribe to the comments on [...]
The Luminary Center for the Arts' Elevator Music Series is kicking into gear again -- and, at least so far in 2010, it's kicking ass. As we reported a while ago, Califone will be performing the sc... Continue reading "The Album Leaf and Sea Wolf Pairing Up at the Luminary Center for the Arts" >

Doron Gild There's a lot of New York in Eyelid Movies , the debut album from the duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel known as Phantogram , and while the pair do indeed have Empire State license plates on their cars, they don't hail from a Brooklyn bedsit or East Village walk-up, but the town of Greenwich way upstate - as close to Montreal as it is to Manhattan. Last week was all about the new Beach House album. This week is a little be quieter, but there's still some good music hitting the shelves today. The Album Leaf releases their fifth LP today, A Chorus of Storytellers (pictured above). If you're looking for a beautiful soundtrack to your day take a listen to the mostly-instrumental ambient, atmospheric, moody (whatever you want to call it) tunes found on A Chorus of Storytellers - it reminds me quite a lot of [...]

My favorite zombie movie of 2009, the horror-comedy Zombieland is in stores tomorrow. Among the week's other theatrical DVD releases are Hilary Swank's Amelia Earhart biopic Amelia and the Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy Love Happens . The Doctor Who specials The End of Time, Parts 1 and 2 and The Waters of Mars are worth watching, and are the week's television highlights. [...]
Some interesting bills to look toward this week, beginning with a busy Sunday night that features free bills at both Rontom's and the Crystal Ballroom. Pierced Arrows, Sea Wolf, The Album Leaf, Dan Bern, Loch Lomond and St. Vincent are but a few of the names in action this week, plus new releases out from Midlake, The Soft Pack, The Heligoats and more. Questions? Comments? Requests during tonight's In House broadcast? The thread is open.....
