As you might have expected we have been loving the new Elucid album. But we wanted to know if our feelings and thoughts on the Sub Bass Diet had any correlation to the feelings and thoughts that went behind making it, so we asked Elucid to break the spirit of the album down for us, turns out we are definitely on the same page. Here's what he had to say... The Sub Bass Diet is relevant because of its fearlessness. The old model of [...]
The weather's getting cold and An Co is shedding their Summertime Clothes for some winter jackets with a new EP: Fall Be Kind. The band told P4K the track list in October, and hinted toward a winter feel. Also, let it be known that this EP houses the first song to legally sample a Grateful Dead song: "What Would I Want? Sky".The release is slated for Dec. 8th, but the magic of the internet has

In a perfect journalistic world, every review is either an unabashed rave about a life-defining record or a scathing pan, solidifying [insert band/album] as [insert hyperbolic insult]. That's how we want it - that's how I want it, anyway - black and white. Challenge me, that's fine, that's encouraged , but make it either good or bad, please. But, such is rarely the case. As anyone who's more than just a casual listener of music knows, records are rarely either astounding or disgusting; usually they're somewhere in-between. Such is the case with the new live set from [...]

Norman Wong Even though he coined it himself, I often wonder if Joel Gibb regrets encouraging the use of "gay church folk music" as a description for the music of The Hidden Cameras . Certainly they got a lot of mileage out of it in the band's earlier days, as it was both attention grabbing and accurate, but now, four albums in, it probably deserves to be retired. It's not that it's no longer descriptive - Gibb is still gay (one assumes), it's still music and it's still built on foundations of folk and church traditions [...]

Nate Ruess (The Format) has decided to push some musical buttons here, much like Bryan Scary and The Shedding Tears by layering dense instrumentation, gospel choirs, electronic pulses and the kitchen sink. That kitchen sink includes pop god Roger Manning Jr. and producer Steven McDonald (Redd Kross ). Opening with "Be Calm" it's deceptively sweet ballad opening ironically turns into loud theatrical melodic chaos. Along with with ex- Anatholla member Andrew Dost and Steel Train frontman Jack Antonoff , the band is relentlessly accurate in it's name. But I would add [...]

For some artists, three years dominated by broken hearts, the spectre of bereavement and wrangles with their record company would be the perfect excuse to churn out a set of self-pitying songs. But Liam Frost has synthesized his experiences into "We Ain't Got No Money, Honey, But We Got Rain", a brilliantly soulful pop record that mixes sweet melodies with tantalizingly dark undertones. Make no mistake this is a totally fantastic album, right up there with my favourite releases of 2009. Since the release of his 2006 debut, the gloriously haunting 'Show [...]

The guys in Hot Hot Heat have been relatively quiet since their 2007 release Happiness Ltd. While I may be in the minority, I actually enjoyed several songs on that release and I'm excited to hear that the guys are back with new material for 2010. So here's a taste of that new material below with a song called "Future Breeds" which sees the band shedding a bit of their poppy/dancey sound we used to love. Maybe the guys will mature a bit and find a new and more grown up sound. Head over [...]

A very excited fan. (Flickr, The Advanced Guard) Here are more results from the survey we sent out to a variety of folks in the music, arts and entertainment communities. Here was the question: How much physical evidence of your music fandom have you shed in the past decade? How much have you collected? Lance Bangs, [...]

Kyle Bylin , Associate Editor I was ten when I recorded "The Rockafeller Skank" by Fatboy Slim off the radio onto cassette tape. Twelve when "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem premiered on TRL. The idea that I could reach out and connect with the artists that I liked didn't exist yet or at least wasn't familiar to me. MySpace didn't become popular where I grew up – almost no one that I knew had it. Artists were perceived as unreachable. What you knew about them was based on [...]

Maybe it was the underwhelming reviews , or maybe it really has to do with the uncertainty of the future of music , but something is compelling Baltimore's Celebration to do things differently on album number 3. And I'm not just talking about shedding producer Dave Sitek (TVOTR) or picking up Beach House's support (and aesthetics, to be honest). The third album is called Electric Tarot , and it's coming out never on no record label. There's no plan [...]
Porcupine Tree has issued the following announcement about drummer Gavin Harrison holding a drum workshop in March 2010: "Gavin will be doing a drum workshop in March next year. During the demonstration Gavin will be playing and explaining the drumming parts for some PT tracks as well as shedding light on the material he has produced by bassist ... When Ash announced they were quitting making albums, people started stroking their chins in interest. Hugh Platt caught up with Ash frontman, Tim Wheeler , to see how it's working out for them. Ash are currently two-thirds of the way through their 'A-Z' tour, a roadtrip taking in 26 off-the-beaten track UK towns, each corresponding with a letter of the alphabet. And why exactly have they adpoted such a ridiculously convoluted tour itinery? It's because [...]
We've always had a slight issue with Beyoncé . Not because we don't like her, it's just that we want the best from her. If pop is a school - with Peter Andre cleaning the loos - then Beyoncé is the head girl, the one with all the ability, the one that everyone loves to hate and aims to be like. It's always been a slight disappointment to us that she's never previously been able to match the peak of 'Crazy In Love', her first solo single proper, and everything since then has been left lying limp [...]

The former Pedro the Lion frontman's fall from grace begets one hell of a solo debut. [BLANK SLATE] David Bazan doesn't know what to tell you about God. After nine Pedro the Lion releases, a decade as indie rock's scholastic defender of Christianity, and hosting theological QA sessions at every show—followed by a very public loss of faith, a couple years of blackout binge drinking and an album that buries, mourns and rages at everything he believed—Bazan has run out of answers. "It's like losing a lifelong imaginary companion," the [...]

Over the past few years, the men of Brand New have been shedding their pop-punk past with every new release. With great success. "Bought A Bride" is a cut from their fine new full-length Daisy , a mid-tempo beauty frontman Jesse Lacey actually penned during a recent tour. Below is an exclusive video of the Long Island rockers taking it for a spin in the studio. Enjoy.
Rarely does the fan made video seem to offer so much insight into a band's "vision." This unofficial video for Fan Death's demo for "Jealousy" was cut from clips of cult film "Don't Deliver Us From Evil," which Fan Death describes as one of their "fav films." In addition to shedding some light on their whole silly, sinister sound, it also explains why this was the group's profile picture for the longest time. [ Tumblr ]

Bob Dylan: Live 1966 - The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert Jordy: It has always been difficult for me to listen to the man-and-his-guitar format. Rock, in the end, is how a small group of musicians produces a singular, simultaneous sound. Dylan's acoustic set on the "Royal Albert Hall" Concert is the former yearning to be the latter. Each of the songs he performs in it was originally recorded with an ensemble ("Mr. Tambourine Man" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" are the closest to their original studio releases, lacking only the electric [...]
I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting when I dug this disc out of the pile of submissions that's seemingly growing by its own volition next to my desk. I vaguely remember seeing the cover of this Dala album as I popped the disc from its housing, and knowing my mindset, I'm almost certain that I was filing this one into some sort of inspirational ambient trance vocal category. Well, it is a vocal thing, and definitely has some inspirational aspects to it, but I never expected Everyone Is Someone to have the effect on [...]
