The Courier Journal profiled uber-engineer, critic, musician, analog-man-in-a-digital-world Steve Albini in today's paper. Albini was the guy behind the equipment on seminal albums like the Pixies Surfer Rosa and Nirvana's In Utero . Albini has been one of the most outspoken critics of how music is run these days: That way of doing things is dead and gone, and they haven't adapted even in the slightest. The big record labels are doomed, and the mainstream music industry is collapsing. I actually find it quite gratifying to see that this is a [...]
Tonight at LA's infamous all ages punk venue The Smell comes two luminaries from the southern hemispheres noisey rock/punk scene flanked by psychedelic Mazzy Star'ish Silverlake band, Monster . Batrider from New Zealand/England and when i knew them, Melbourne, bring a brutally melodic, noise laden form of sludge rock that heralds influence's from seventies punk to nineties grunge. Their lead singer's voice sweet, yet torn, rides high above there tortured riffs and droning rhythms creating beauty from distorto-horror. Live they sway and brood creating a drowned in sound, [...]

Amore is the new anarchia. A sangue freddo - è la [...]

Chicago post-punk rawk legends The Jesus Lizard reunited in 2008 and performed at May 2009's ATP vs. The Fans II: The Fans Strike Back in Minehead, England along with the likes of Devo, Killing Joke, and Sleep. By all accounts, and judging by the above photo, it musta been an incredibley intense show. Fast forward to 9/11/2009. The Jesus Lizard take the stage at the Stardust Ballroom up at Kutsher's Resort in Monticello, NY for All Tomorrow's Parties second annual New York festival . In case we had forgotten, David Yow made sure to wish [...]

Mogwai etc., All Tomorrow's Parties, Camber Sands, April 2000 Alphabetical post-rock nostalgia your way comes: Arab Strap typical festival band, rolled out all the hits; sales of The Weekend Never Starts Round Here saw a spike the following week. Bardo Pond failed to live up to a rather high billing as stoner post-rock legends, were but reasonably spooky [...]
Man oh man, this Robbie Fulks Michael Jackson tribute album is getting more awesome and more crazy with every new detail. Now, we find out that Steve Albini's noisy three-piece Shellac plays on it: Shellac is a magnificent punk band...
In one respect, Tori Amos releasing a holiday album makes perfect sense. The holidays are infused with religion, and the singer-songwriter references religion as much as poets reference autumn leaves. However, Amos isn't exactly channeling a gospel choir when she talks about religion or spirituality. This is, after all, the woman who wrote, "God sometimes you just don't come through / Do you need a woman to look after you?" A fantastic song, but not something you put on while trimming the tree. Unsurprisingly, Amos hasn't released a Christmas album. She has dubbed it a solstice album, [...]

Our fair city's music needs your help. As you may know, today's economy is not doing well. This is forcing the city to have to make budget cuts where ever possible, even if that means eliminating some of Chicago's free summer music festivals including Blues Fest, Jazz Fest, the World Music Festival, and Summer Dance. Even Millennium Park concerts such as Music Without Borders and the very cool Downtown Sound series , which only this past summer offered free performances from St. Vincent, Shellac, Dirty Projectors and the Feelies at the [...]

It's possible that no band better defined the aesthetic, attitude, or ethic of Touch & Go's 25-plus-year history than the Jesus Lizard did. The label's 50/50 business model, first started by Factory Records in England, gave the underbelly of American music a creative vehicle it had never had before, with the backing of Chicago, America's closet cultural metropolis, to support the music on a local level. All of that coalesced when Dave Yow and David William Sims, two members of an Austin cult favorite named Scratch Acid, moved to the Windy City. Once there, they promptly made friends with [...]

Ahh, it's good to be a city girl. What with all this Woodstock hoopla and nostalgia behind us, it's refreshing to know that a documentary about a current music festival that actively (and non-corporately) pursues creativity is getting its day in the sun, and if you live in one of the cities above, you get an early peek at its documentary! All Tomorrow's Parties is a patchwork production made up of mobile phone, Super 8 and camcorder footage from 200+ fans, musicians and filmmakers over the course of the festival's more recent years, both in Europe and the [...]

Welcome to part one of GIMME TINNITUS' Best Songs Of The Aughts where we look back on the best songs of 2000-2004. Back when all the "best of the decade" whoopla started earlier this year (with Pitchfork's Best Of ), I began thinking about the songs I would have blogged about had I actually been blogging (or let's say posting about music on an angelfire page) way back in 2000. I sifted through many tracks to come up with this list, and I hope it helps you reconnect with some tracks you may have forgotten [...]

The search for a new mixtape service (among other things) continues. 8tracks.com works, but it's not the greatest. Enter mixtape.me, which ALMOST does the job, but I sorta hate the way it looks. Anyway, this playlist isn't full of Halloween songs - just covers. You know, disguises. Like costumes. HIGHLIGHTS David Yow of Jesus Lizard with Shellac as the Sex Pistols, from a show on Halloween in 1998. Hairdresser on Fire featuring the vocal stylings of Durutti Column's Vini Reilly. Yeah, he's kind of a shitty singer [...]
