Swedish popsters Shout Out Louds might not be the most likely candidates for a behind-the-scenes video, and what this short clip is tragically lacking in sex and drugs it more than makes up for in rock 'n' roll. While you might need to speak Swedish to understand some of the footage, all you need to [...]

Gunnar Bjorling I am convinced that somewhere within the Labrador Records offices in Stockholm, there exists a magical machine that issues mandates to bands on the roster as to what their next albums must sound like. For example, The Radio Dept drew "Belle & Sebastian meets the Jesus & Mary Chain" for their debut and then "depressed Pet Shop Boys" for the follow-up and The Mary Onettes , it seems, were told to make their new record Puzzles sound like "the Shout Out Louds covering Echo & The [...]

Photography by Suckcess Folks who know me know that I love riding my bike in less than optimum conditions. I love riding in the rain, in the cold, and with the time change, in the dark. Love it. I'm no daredevil or anything, I just that feeling of being the only idiot out there on a bicycle, experiencing those moments, which makes them just a little bit more special for me. Friday was one of those moments. After the Roll bike event [...]

I realized I've been tossing the term Balearic around quite a bit lately without much preface. Balearic is a genre of electronic music that, as its name might suggest, originated in the Balearic island region, specifically, in the beach raves and nightclubs of Ibiza in the mid-90s. It's also sometimes referred to as Baeleric beat and runs the range from deep house influenced, to my preference, italo disco influenced. Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling are largely credited as the godfathers of the sound, but in the past few years its seen a resurgence and re-imagination as sunny, disco-tinged melodies attributed [...]

It's wonderful when a record label forms a distinct identity that you learn to trust. It's essentially the antithesis of the major label mentality, where you simply sign every cash cow you can get your hands on. That's not to say smaller labels don't have financial considerations and that they might not play into their artist selection process, but it's far less pronounced than when you're say...Sony BMG. There are only a few labels I actively follow and consider trustworthy - 4AD, Mute, Domino, Star Time (former home to the much-missed Tom Vek) and certainly Merge. I may [...]

Shout Out Louds - Working on "Work" w/ Phil Ek A peek at the Shout Out Louds ' recording process. Their new album Work is out 2/23 from Merge .

After the good news about the Shout Out Louds ' new album, I've received word today that fabulous US indie-folk-act Midlake is also readying their next full-length. The Courage Of Others will be released in February 2010. According to their label Bella Union , it turned out slower, darker and more carved, both eerier and dreamier than its predecessor The Trials Of Van Occupanther . Now I'm intrigued!!! Here's the tracklist [...]

>> We were rapping with our tweeps last week on the Interzizzles about the wonderful Glaswegian indie rock trio Projeckt A-ko , who released the superlative full-length Yoyodyne this past spring. The discussion reminded us that when we had communicated with band fronter Fergus Lawrie last he had mentioned that writing and recording for a new Projekt A-ko was already in the works. We checked back in with Mr. Lawrie last weekend, who provided us with an update on all things A-ko. Recording started a year ago at The Diving Bell studio in Glasgow, at [...]

MySpace Opening up with the sound of bird noises might be a bit of an over-sell, but forgiveness comes easily when the multi-layered harmonies of Toronto's The Wilderness Of Manitoba arrive and usher in their debut EP, Hymns Of Love And Spirits . Sharing members with Provincial Parks and Key Witness , The Wilderness of Manitoba come with a very clear and direct mandate - to craft gentle, intricate folk songs of the sort that no one seems to make anymore. Of course, that's a mandate [...]

Shout Out Louds will release a new album, titled "Work," on February 23 via Merge Records . The album, the Swedes' third, was recorded at Bear Creek Studio in Seattle with producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, the Shins, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse). You know what that means, right? MOUNTAINS OF REVERB. In any case, Lead singer Adam Olenius has provided fans with insight as to the album's title: "I am fascinated by the process of creating something and almost working yourself to death, the relief that comes when it is over and [...]
