He is one of the longest standing readers and commenters of this blog, and has written another two fine Sunday Supplement posts for us this week. Cheers C&B.] To me modern German music has always been about the monosyllabic pioneers of Krautrock. Can. Faust. Neu! Or perhaps the ear-shattering crunch of Einsturzende Neubauten's strategies against architecture. Brilliant stuff, but forbidding too; and sometimes a little too Baader-Meinhof for my bourgeois ass. This has been The New Collisions ' year, due to both their incredible breakout success... and the fact that this is pretty much the only year they've been in existence. How did they do it? We asked guitarist Scott Guild to tell us their story... BBC : First, introduce yourselves... SG : Sarah Guild: vocals; Scott Guild: guitar; Alex Stern: bass/vocals; Casey Gruttadauria: synth/keys; Zak Kahn: drums BBC : You guys shot up seemingly out of nowhere; what are the origins of the band? How'd [...]

By Tobi Vail, musician, influential DIY punk zinester, activist and feminist theorist from Olympia, Wash. To read more of her writing, check out Jigsaw Underground photo by Joaquin de la Puente At the end of the '90s, I got excited when I realized that young girls no longer needed to hang out with creepy record-collector guys in order to find out about cool music. Information was out there for everyone to access equally via the Internet. Knowledge about obscure records could [...]

What's good, soul babies? I hope you're ready for me...cuz I. am. back. I've been wanting to do a Souled On Samples post for quite a while now, but it's always somewhat of a painstaking process for me. I give mad props to the dudes who put together entire sample sets 3 weeks before a hip hop album officially drops, but for better or worse, that's really not my style. I started this series years ago in the hopes of illustrating how much the hip hop generation owes to its musical predecessors and vice [...]

First thing is first, hi people from NY Magazine! Thanks to you, I've decided to post (aka: throw together while I eat my monday morning breakfast) some music I've been really into lately - what a novelty, I know... For more update-to-date information... like what I actually ate for breakfast (j/k) you can always follow me on Twitter. Local Natives: LA Based band, great moustaches, lovely three part harmonies on entrancing indie folk songs. I told everyone I saw during CMJ how much I loved this band. [...]
I met Tina Sugandh nine or so years ago and since then her star has not just been on the rise—it's been stratospheric. But events of a more personal nature have taken center stage recently, and in honor of October's Breast Cancer Awareness month, Tina has been giving away a download of what she calls the most important song she's ever written, "Snake Charmer," free on her website. (...and it's linked a little while longer exclusively for TVD.) "I started performing with my family, The Sugandh Family, when I was five [...]

100. Jumbo. "Cada vez que me voy" DD y Ponle Play After a compelling Restaurant and a jewel of a song titled "Fotografia", Jumbo's harmless music saw the light for the second time in one of the most conversational pop songs recently. Its self defining lyrics are warmly served by an almost effortless rock-pop accompaniment. In its most juvenile moment, Jumbo crafted a song as self-reflecting and fun as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." JSB [...]

Phish is more than just a band; it is a way of life, a worldview that transcends jamming guitars and drums. Experiencing the live performance stirs up waves of emotion that make you move and dance with a freedom that can only be described by simply saying, "I was at a Phish show, man." And man, Phish's Festival 8 proves that the Phish way of life is stronger and more vibrant than ever. The three-day festival kicked off in high gear with "Party Time," and sustained the energy with "Chalk Dust [...]

Halloween in our tiny township is a community affair: most homes are too remote to manage, so we trick or treat downtown at storefronts and darkened sidestreet porches as the skies darken, making our way to the edge of town just after twilight's end. There, we line up for our annual parade down Main Street, and - at the signal from a guy dressed as a traffic cone, or a phalanx of Roman gladiators from the high school football team - march onward to glory, and a costume contest and cider and popcorn balls to follow in the majestic [...]

I feel like a lot of the shows we end up recommending and reviewing on Boston Band Crush are in support of the little guy - the local bands, the ones passing through, the bands we love or want you to love that aren't on the radio on your drive to work and don't have their new single's video on TRL (does TRL still exist? I have lots of vivid memories of running home from school in eighth grade to watch Carson Daly tell me what was hip and cool before it was hip and cool to not care about [...]

Day two of our local showcase spectacular, and it's a beautiful night for seeking out new musical talent. Having studied the form, we're obviously hoping not to miss anything that turns out be brilliant; despite the frantic dashes between venues, we occasionally get the opportunity to stop, chat and compare notes with other hacks and photographers, and inevitably there are "aww, I wish I'd seen them!" moments aplenty. We can't get disheartened; this event is as much about networking as it is about enjoying the gigs - and making sure the right acts get plenty of love and [...]

-I'm not sure that Christina Aguilera needed an excuse to get 'gussied up' as my Moms used to say and play a Burlesque dancer. Or, maybe a nicer way to say it is that maybe it's a role she's been preparing for her whole life. She'll be starring opposite Kristen Bell in the movie that starts filming in November. -Adam Young/Owl City has one of the top songs on the iTunes singles chart right now, Fireflies, or what I call the Firefly and Lightning Bug and Insomnia song and sounds exactly [...]

Wassup, soul kids? How we feeling out there? I know that I've probably been left for dead, or maybe plastered on the side of the milk carton you use to float your Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but there's no need to call Nancy Grace just yet. Despite all reports to the contrary, yours truly is alive and back to raise some long-awaited hell. It's cold and rainy today, which reminds me that before long, I'll be spending the majority of my time in hibernation. That likely means trouble for all of you, [...]
I 've always found this girl Muffy, as she calls herself, confusing yet compelling. I personally, have never been able to resist any artist with crazy hair and a seemingly wild and fearless sense of style to match. It just brings to mind a nonchalance that usually makes the person seem more interesting. In a psychedelic kind of way. But who is she? Sweet, yummie, pop, bubbly, cupcakeiness can be very difficult to swallow even if over Bangladesh's heavy on the synth beats. But once you get to listening to her, the sweetness becomes a [...]

So I'm head over heels for Atlas Sound's new album Logos . Because that isn't released until Oct. 19th, I don't want to post anything from it to avoid getting in trouble. Instead, I thought I'd post a song I found on Bradford Cox's blog. He has a lot of great mixes and EP's that are definitely worth checking out. This is off a holiday EP he made, and is easily one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. But for some reason I love listening to it, and so it's the song o' the week for me. Head [...]

Happy Friday, ZME readers. We know there are a ton of music websites you could be choosing to burn your time on while you should be entering data, emailing clients, or for the funemployed of you, watching some high quality porn. So, we appreciate that you've chosen us. Today, I'd like to present my breakdown of the Descendent's earth-shattering 1982 debut LP, Milo Goes to College . I can't overstate the importance of this album in both the spectrum of punk and self-acribed "geek" culture. The game-changing nature of these 15 [...]

Interview and Words by Samuel Duke Joshua Wells lives a desirable existence. His day job–when he's employed–requires little commitment, so he can spend his ample free time focusing on his music, of which there is a lot. Wells helped form and plays drums in Vancouver rock priests Black Mountain, but, like most of his bandmates, also has something on the side. That project is Lightning Dust, his duo with Black Mountain vocalist Amber Wells. On 2007's eponymous debut and even moreso on this month's Infinite Light (both for Jagjaguwar, who release most of the B.M.-related canon,) [...]
