( Editor's note: That's not my living room up there. It's a photo of The Who on a huge TV in an immaculate entertainment room that I found on Flickr. Pretty good visual metaphor for the current state of the band that recorded The Who Sell Out, no? Three quick things on the Super Bowl before we dive into this most recent edition of the singles club. 1. The Who - Let me preface this by saying that I love The Who as much as any other band on the planet. A cassette copy [...]

Not a whole lot going tonight, Fair to Midland got into a crash and need money for a tow truck or something so people are playing at the Boiler Room. Yeah Def needs people to party in excess before getting ash put on their forehead at a special Fat Tuesday edition of 90's night. As for me? There is only one thing I need, and that is Not New Music Tuesday. Henry's Dress Bust [...]

All hail Hot Chip, who I have just crowned kings of the British electropop scene. Exhibit A: Their new album, "One Life Stand," which Americans just got their paws on today. The fourth in a string of solid releases ("Coming on Strong," "The Warning," and [...]
La Snacks , "Kristin Was A Meteorologist" I've been meaning to write about Austin, TX's La Snacks for a while now. I was first introduced to the band by Jumbo Slice from the DC Rock Club blog about a year ago. Then in November, when I was down in Austin for the Fun Fun Fest , I had the opportunity to meet the band's singer, Robert, at the Local Music is Sexy show put on by WOXY (among others). As a result, I've been listening to [...]

In 1990, Michael Martin Murphey took a trip down a musical back road with the release of Cowboy Songs , an album that paid homage to the music of the Old West. At the time, Murphey was riding high on the country singles chart with songs like "From The Word Go" and "Never Givin' Up On Love." Though it was different from what the singer had previously recorded, it helped usher in another successful phase of his career. In the 70s, the singer was a mainstay on the Pop charts with songs like [...]

Wire formed in London, England in 1976, the group consisted of Watford Art College students. Collin Newman was on vocals/guitar, Bruce Gilbert on guitar, Graham Lewis on bass/vocals and Robert Gotobed on drums. Influenced by the emerging UK Punk scene at the time, Wire began playing live shows and gained the interest of Mike Thorne, who was a producer that had connections with EMI Records. Thorne, who was recording local Punk acts at The Roxy for a live compilation album, recorded Wire and included two of their songs on the compilation (titled Live At The Roxy ). Shortly after [...]
It's an honor that I got to speak to Mad Professor , one of the true torchbearers for the Dub sound. It was his No Protection remix of Massive Attack 's Protection that helped me fully-realize how far Dub music could go, and from that point I truly started to discover the classics and such, and keep a finger to the pulse of the sound and its evolution. He's recently compiled a huge library of sounds for a Loopmasters ' sample [...]
The Musician mp3 Nic Dawson Kelly Old Valentine ..... buy it Nic Dawson Kelly put this record out last October and nobody really heard it over here. I'm not sure anyone much heard it over THERE either. But DC played it on The Waiting Room , and made me listen to it, and goddamn if I can't stop playing it in my car and on my laptop and on my ipod. And it's not the sound of something that will [...]
The biggest bands in the world have a concept to promote their tour. U2 did Zoo TV and the 360 Tour , the Rolling Stones had A Bigger Bang ; so when Americana singer-songwriter Israel Nash Gripka and indie garage rockers The Fieros began planning their U.S. jaunt, they decided to be candid and "Sing For Their Supper." In March, the artists will set sail from New York City to the southern United States, stopping along the [...]
Peaches , the bad girl of electro punk, and Chilly Gonzales , piano virtuoso and rap entertainer, will bring their unique, completely stripped version of Jesus Christ Superstar , to the Hebbel Theatre in Berlin, Germany. The exclusive performance begins a 3-night run on March 25. Together, Peaches and Gonzales will narrate the story of the last week in the life of Jesus Christ [...]
![[NS008] Background Radiation – Moot Point EP (2010)](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2321591_lg.jpg)
folktronic pop whatever you want,, easy sexy happy waves,, simple structures but never boring,, a touch of melanchonic undertone, fill the room,, - i like it. peace.dg Background Radiation, is folktronic pop. Tim Dwyer and Ludo Maas, both on different sides of the world, collaborate in a Postal Service like fashion through the internet. Moot Point is the ironically named follow-up to their ironically named debut, "False Start". Much like the first EP, these songs, layer acoustic tinkerings and [...]

Hello everybody!!! It is good to be back!! Sorry about the mass hiatus but I was in South America for a couple of months and it has taken me a month to get my head back. Apropos of absolutely nothing, I though I'd share this lovely moment from a story in the January issue of MOJO I just chanced upon. November 2007: The Foo Fighters are in Canada, supporting Bob Dylan on the latter's Modern Times tour. [Head Foo and former Nirvana drummer] Dave Grohl is in his dressing room when he gets a message that Mr. Dylan wants to see him. "So I walk out," says Grohl, "and he's standing like a silhouette in a dark corner -- black leather boots, [...]

Well, we don't usually do this, but seeing as how Van Dyke Parks is a living legend and his Portland show is at Mississippi Studios on Wednesday (inconveniently, the same day WW comes out), we decided to run an extended Q&A with him a couple days before the article hit the racks. Enjoy! -Ed. Van Dyke Parks plays Portland Wednesday. Immediately tweet the following peeps: 1) Beach Boys/Brian Wilson obsessives, 2) students of rock history and 3) anyone interested in the intersection of popular and classical music. Talk about a rare opportunity: Though Parks [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars By now, surely everyone has his or her expectations of what a Hot Chip record should sound like. You've got the club bangers, and you've got the geek-tronica that makes you questions just why you're moving to and fro. Their fourth album, One Life Stand , sees the band doing much of the same, yet they finally honed their craft enough to create an album with very few imperfections. One of the record's longest songs, "Thieves [...]

Produced by Tom Caruana , "Enter The Magical Mystery Chambers" is a remix album combining Wu-Tang verses with Beatles samples, various covers of Beatles songs, and vintage sound clips. It's really good, too. I was initially hesitant to try it out, but I'm glad I did. I don't think the execution of such an endeavor could be done much better than this. The album has been mentioned in New York Times , The Chicagoist , L.A. Times, The Guardian , and Acclaim Magazine has a Q&A with the teacher/producer behind the music. [...]

In addition to streaming and giving away the new album from Chandra and Leigh, The Watson Twins , we talked to them about the new record, where they live and Sesame Street. Talking to You, Talking to Me displays a bit of a departure from your last couple of records. Was it just something you stumbled into, or were you trying to find something in particular musically? As musicians we are always pushing ourselves creatively... that being said we wanted to try and explore [...]
