Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) seem to have no desire to slow down its output of material. Following last year's Peaceblaster and a remix album to boot, the electronic jam band has returned with its latest record, Ad Explorata. The album is due to drop on December 8th through 1320 Records . The five-piece group, famous for combining live instruments with electronic music, has posted an entry on the weirdly, offbeat development of its latest project on its website. Basically, the whole process started when keyboardist David Phipps' [...]

Words : Tim Hara Images : Matt Speck Everyone inside the Auditorium Theatre knew that they were in for a special night. It was the first time that Philadelphia's Disco Biscuits were playing a Halloween show in Chicago. This was a big deal. The venue was absolutely stunning. An old opera house that has been open for almost 120 years, huge murals are painted on the walls that are surrounded by intricate, ornamental carvings. The sound is loud [...]
Like New Year's Eve , Halloween is another holiday that a lot of bands choose to celebrate in style. There's just something about mixing the live concert experience with all the fun and choas of Halloween that really brings out the freaks. While most bands typically play into the Halloween vibe in some way, touring bands often approach Halloween as an opportunity to really create a unique live music event. Just as we did with our New Year's Eve concert round-up , we've compiled a list of Halloween concerts that will be going on this weekend (see below [...]

You might have heard of the Spam Allstars if you frequent music festivals. You might have heard of them if you like to dance at bars. You might have heard of them if you're into jazz. Really, you might have heard of them if you like a primo jam blend of jazzy Latin beats and funkadelic synths. The Spam Allstars have been delivering a unique neo-tropical funk sound for over ten years, taking their hip-spiking show to the four corners of the world and [...]
My final night of Next Big Nashville didn't get off to the start I had hoped for. After a pregame nap that lasted about an hour and half longer than planned, I headed out about 9:30 and figured I'd catch the tail end of Mikky Ekko 's set at 12th and Porter. But when I got there, his set had evidently ended early, and the next band was already setting up their gear. So I made my way to the Exit/In with my sights on seeing the last half of [...]

Sound Tribe Sector 9 dropped a slew of recent announcements as they roll on through their fall tour and gear up to release their new album, entitled Ad Explorata . Check it out... Most interesting to us is that the band will be helping iClips add to their premium broadcast options with a series of webcasts from their Fall Tour called Wednesday Nights Live . The series will air every Wednesday in October, starting tonight with their show in Omaha, and following with Louisville (10/14), Bridgeport (10/21) and Knoxville [...]
Review and photos by Elgin Smith I will admit that I felt a little out of place without some glow sticks at Tuesday's Sound Tribe Sector 9 show in Lawrence. The group's combination of electronica... Continue reading "Concert review: Sound Tribe Sector 9 at Liberty Hall" >

Austin City Limits brought the sun, the rain, the mud and about 150,000 music fans to one of the largest music extravaganzas I have ever witnessed. If I found it possible to get out of bed before noon then I probably would have seen a lot more music, but here is an ACL breakdown (weather forecast and all) starting from 2:00 pm and on. Day 1 of the festival was sunny and sweaty. Kicking the day off at Dr. Dog , with a little folk and rock get [...]

For live/touring bands, New Year's Eve is a key night of the year to really bring out the big guns and party down with hardcore fans. As such, we tend to see lots of bands playing bigger shows to hometown crowds, often mixing in some fun/silly covers and party-time antics, or generally getting a bit crazy for the NYE celebrations. For fans, it's a great time to catch your favorite band and let it all out in one big end-of-the-year catharsis. We've started to see a number of bands announce plans for their New Year's Eve celebrations [...]

STS9 Genre: Instrumental rock, electronic, jam band From: Santa Cruz, California Snellville, Georgia Katrina -- it's a name freighted with some incredibly heavy history. The 2005 hurricane that decimated one of America's proudest cities was the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States. And New Orleans hasn't been the same since. Hoping to do their part in the ongoing process to revitalize the city, Californian dancefloor-pleasers STS9 (Sound [...]

Monday nights in Atlanta have seemed to be rather krunk lately, but this Monday there are so many options to choose from. I'm really excited about Dungen, Woods , and Twin Tigers all on the same bill Wednesday night at The Earl. Also, I highly recommend catching The Fiery Furnaces & White Rabbits Thursday and the stacked bill at the Drunken Unicorn Saturday night. Best shows in Atlanta August 17 - 23: Monday: Bat For Lashes, Other Lives @ The [...]

First things first, I'd like to apologize for my Lollapalooza coverage this year. Call it what you like, but I prefer to refer to it as "condensed" compared to past years. See, by this time in the week I'd normally have devoted the past four days to Lollapalooza preview coverage. That'd start with mp3s from every artist playing, followed by day-by-day previews and artist schedule match-ups. Given that my time is somewhat short these days and if I did do a post with mp3s from every artist at the festival it'd get pulled down in less than a couple hours [...]

another friday, another week in the books. the deep sighing relief of another weekend ahead of us, full of mystery, surprise and intrigue. also full of mystery, surprise and intrigue are the sounds of sound tribe sector 9 (more commonly referred to as sts9). while i have never seen them live, ive heard through the grapevine that they are one of those groups that you have to see live, without a doubt. they are sort of an instrumental jam band, and according to wikipedia, they describe themselves as "post-rock dance music". not sure [...]
