It's been almost two years since we've heard a proper yelp from Jamie Stewart and his band of avant-humanists. Which isn't to say he hasn't been busy, making a record with Former Ghosts, writing personal haiku's for me and a billion other kids, and even covering Morrissey. And now that we've all been tended to, Xiu Xiu will return to form this February with the release of their new full-length called (ready?), Dear God, I Hate Myself. After the somewhat recent departure of Caralee McElroy, they've enlisted the full-time [...]

i want back the years that you took when i was young ♫ William Fitzsimmons - I Don't Feel It Anymore (Song of the Sparrow) I don't know much about William Fitzsimmons but I do know that he is marvelous. He has a marvelous voice, a marvelous beard, and a marvelous back story. How does someone looking so gruff sound like silk tissues filling with beautiful emotions? Try being raised by two blind parents in a house where musical instruments replaced visual stimuli. Yup, and in rural Pennsylvania, too. I don't think any of [...]

I keep missing Kasey Chambers when she comes through town, but it's not for lack of trying. The Australian singer-songwriter with the airy twang in her voice does heartache so well, it's a dream of mine to sit on the grass at some summery festival, eyes closed, letting the bittersweet music burn through me like the sunshine. Kasey's talent springs from growing up with music in her veins: the daughter of steel guitar player Bill Chambers , she picked up her first strings early, and spent an adolescent decade on the road [...]

In the middle of her solo performance at The Mill in Iowa City Thursday night, Pieta said to the small crowd, "It's like I'm playing to you in my living room!" Pieta was referring to the small crowd on Thursday night, but the stage was adorned with a chair and nightstand as well as lamps and an old dress form giving the stage a homey touch with lighting designed by Stan Crocker , who has done a lot of lighting design for TV shows like CMT's Crossroads. Last night was the first night of a three-week artist-in-residency [...]

Hey, if you've been watching the RSS feed, you know I just did some serious housekeeping with the Drake's Takes , and now, for a brief moment, I'm back up to date (we'll see how long that lasts). This week, Drake spotlights the new one from The Flaming Lips , but if you've been reading bumpershine closely over the last couple of months, you know that last week I was most excited about the US Release of Fanfarlo 's brilliant debut "Reservoir". -ed. We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases [...]

We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases this year, but mid-October always seems to toss a couple wrenches in folks' year end list plans. The latest from The Flaming Lips fall in that category - you think Pitchfork might want an amendment to their 'Best Albums of the 2000s'? Toss the new one from Neon Indian in as well, in that regard. Elswewhere, there are fine/interesting/worthy releases from Har Mar Superstar , Thao and the Get Down Stay Down , The Heavy , Erin McKeown , Fanfarlo [...]

CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

October? Jesus, you must be kidding, that means Autumn and everything. You can feel it in the air actually, and in fact it's been there for a couple of weeks now. Blech. Booring. Still, dark evenings in with a glass of wine and a record player is a fine way to spend an evening. I am still absolutely buzzed off my tits after the weekend. Neil from Meursault and Frances Magic Tricks and Pete Leg were recording in the house this weekend and fucking hell it sounds like it's going to be [...]

It's not very often Shane or myself really wants to give anyone else the chance to talk - especially about music on our own blog - but after the countless hours of work required to get the Mississippi Sheiks tribute record out the door, Steve Dawson has earned a few moments of your time. Plus, with such an amazing collection of artists talking about music that influences them, well, it's better to get the goods right from the horse's mouth. So here is Steve's own two cents on a project that means more to him than [...]
Remove your black or dark blue hoodie from its hanger, change those gauges in your ear and show off your tattoo of a sparrow as you get ready for Dashboard Confessional's latest U.S. tour. Thanks to LiveDaily , we know beginning in November (with a few shows in September and October) that Chris Carrabba and company will trek through most of America (and even a stop just north of the border) before winding the whole thing down in Atlanta on December 18th. Joining the Boca Raton-based band will be Never Shout Never [...]
