With the Wolverines sucking wind in two sports and Rich Rodriguez leading the U of M football team to two of the worst seasons in the program's history, Ann Arborites need to look beyond sports for inspiration these days. [Photo by Jeremy Gordon ] Fortunately, one of the nation's great eccentric cities can fill its fanatical void with a young band called The Macpodz . A long time coming for sure, Ann Arbor finally has its first great jamband; a guitar-less five-piece comprised of brilliant musicians who via [...]

Best of 2009 Once again our writers have delved back through the hazy mists of their befuddled minds and delivered their verdict on the year just gone to conjure up a list of the very best. The outcome proves to be a collective mark of appreciation to the scuzzy guitar hounds from NYC, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart , winners of the album and singles of the year awards and [...]

The band that had the most impact at Indietracks 2009, to these eyes and ears at least, was The Specific Heats. Their set in the packed church was delayed when their reverb unit rebelled against the UK voltage and caught fire in protest, filling the stage with smoke. Once the offending unit was removed, the band, in matching capes, played a spectacularly energetic set of 60s garage-influenced indiepop, with guitarist/singer Mat's leaps and keyboardist Marisa (ex-Besties) head shaking a particularly fine sight. The Specific Heats began in Boston as a development of a solo project by Matt [...]

Indietracks 3 has the best setting of any festival; stood at the outdoor stage, you can see (and hear, and smell) trains from the 50s and 60s shuttling between stations on this heritage railway and the steam loco unburdening itself of excess steam at the end of the day. It beats Glastonbury's odours of dope, damp teenagers and faintly farty vegetarian food. That paradoxical mix of modern pop and industrial history (try walking between Swanwick and Butterley stations to see the strangest train graveyard) is one of the reasons why we chose Indietracks over Truck, the two unfortunately [...]

Pop on 45! Specific Heats were one of the highlights of the recent IndieTracks weekend festival where they proved to be a Farfisa rhythmed joy in the restricted confines of the church. Fortunately the subsequent fiver spent at their merch stall on their Back Through Tyme EP proves that it wasn't just the copious quantities of real ale we'd all been quaffing that left us clapping like a bunch of giddy seals [...]

CHOIR OF YOUNG BELIEVERS /// THIS IS FOR THE WHITE IN YOUR EYES /// GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL /// WORDS: LOU WRIGHT /// Singer, songwriter, and composer Jannis Noya Makrigiannis ditched his Copenhagen digs and headed for the Greek island of Samos to craft the sound which became Choir of Young Believers ' This is For The White In Your Eyes . This, weirdly enough, makes sense. There's something of that [...]

Saint Etienne & Tim Burgess [...]

There are several blogs and websites out there who have posted their seasonal mixes. I've chosen not to do one this year, but there are two from other blogs that I especially like, and I would like to share them with you. One of them is a Christmas mix and the other a winter mix. The fine blog Skatterbrain posted a christmas mix today called Jangle bells , with [...]
