Guy Clark hit my radar after I got into Steve Earle in the 90's. I started digging deeper into the "outlaw" singer/songwriters from the state of Texas. People like Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Joe Ely, and Townes Van Zandt. I still have a long way to go with exploring the rich catalogs of these guys. My most recent pick-up on eMusic was The Essential Guy Clark , which I will make a point of spending plenty of time with in the near future. I heard "Let Him Roll" on Sirius [...]

I've been feeling unsafe when I venture out at night lately and I'm chalking it up to the recent presence of Crunkcore and Christian metal in Portland. While scouring the internet for a good place to purchase personal defense weapons, I came across something infinitely more exciting than a Panther Stun Gun: Hayes Carll 's two night stand at the Aladdin Theater on January 19th and 20th! Hooray! Let him lead us back to the shelter of our rowdy Americana roots. Hayes Carll sort of sounds like electric Bob Dylan meets Garth Brooks, but more Texas. Ok, [...]
Benefit albums and Tom Waits both seem to really "in" these days. Recently, the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band decided to combine the best of both worlds and create the incredibly down-to-business titled Preservation, an Album Benefiting Preservation Hall and Its Music Outreach Program . As a recently issued press release explains (via who else? TFB ), "over the last year, more than 20 of American music's most exciting artists traveled to Preservation Hall in New Orleans to collaborate with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on classic New Orleans repertoire." Among those 20 artists [...]

I love Steve Earle and Allison Moorer. I think Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis are great. Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler of Over the Rhine make me giddy. You know how I feel about Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson. For my money, though, Buddy & Julie Miller are the first couple of Americana music. Buddy is the multi-instrumentalist/producer /singer/songwriter [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] 45. The Weekend - The Weekend (2000) Probably the most obscure selection on my personal list comes by way of London Ontario's now defunct The Weekend. At the turn of the century I was listening to a lot of embarrassing music and, as expected, when I took the time to revisit some of those [...]
From December 1964 to December 1965 -- re-meet the Beatles as they made the transition from the world's best bar band to the forerunners of folk-rock. Has any band ever had such an astoundingly productive 12-months? Beatles for Sale (1964) Steve Earle was once asked what his "desert island pick" would be. "We're assuming I have a way to play records on the island?" he began (of course he did). "For me it would be Beatles for Sale." Huh? He meant to say Exile on Main Street, or Live at the Old Quarter, or Nebraska, obviously. Not the record [...]

Back in mid-October Chad Price and a merry crew departed from the offices of Suburban Home Records in a party van with the intent of doing 10 shows at 10 different breweries in support if Chad's new album, Smile Sweet Face ( 9b.net review ). Our good internet buddy (and stellar show taper) James Freeman from That's The Thing About That went along for the ride to record the shows. He culled those recordings down to the best from it all and released it earlier this week and [...]
Caught up with Rhett Miller this morning over the phone--and overseas too, actually, as Miller's currently in the UK, out on tour as the opening act for Steve Earle. The bulk of the conversation ... We've spent all this time building up our digital music libraries, so why not tinker around with them a bit and have some fun? Last week I explored tunes that clocked in at 2:28 . This week, I take it to the streets. The exercise this week is to locate your street songs. I'm not talkin' lanes, avenues, roads, courts, and the like. Nuh-uh. I'm talkin' Streets . What's more, I'm looking for songs that are simply names of Streets. "Oak Street", "Main Street", "This Street", "That Street". So that leaves out a [...]

Website Myspace Wilco came to the Academy Leeds (formerly the Town & Country Club) on a wet Tuesday night in November. Despite the limited americana/alt-country fanbase of Yorkshire having to choose between Wilco and Steve Earle both playing Leeds on the same night, the Academy was pretty near capacity, although not quite enough for the touts outside to be selling tickets off cheap. Wilco were supported by Clientele [...]

First of all, these lists are all opinions, so you can't really say a list is "good" or "bad". You can only say stuff like "I disagree with this list" or "Whoever made this list has different tastes than I have". That being said, this list sucks. *Lil Wayne giggle*. Saw it at Stereogum . 50 The Lonely Island - Incredibad 49 Rodrigo y Gabriela - 11:11 48 Thao - Know Better Learn Faster 47 Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement 46 Noisettes - [...]

Twangy spitfire Neko Case's Middle Cyclone was selected by Amazon.com's editors as the best of 2009, while U2's No Line On The Horizon was the online retailer's best-selling album this year. That's according to a just-released year-end package that jumps the "happy new year" gun by quite a few days. Sure, boosting these albums now will probably be great for the holiday sales, but it's too bad that publishing the list now means that the likes of R. Kelly's Untitled and Shakira's She Wolf didn't get their critical due. Oh [...]

Just a few quick schedule updates for some on-air happenings at WDVX this week... ***I had mentioned over the weekend that Jill Andrews of the everybodyfields would be joining me on the air tonight as part of the WDVX Fall Fund Drive. That appearance has been postponed as Jill has been given the opportunity to open for Willie Nelson tonight at the Tennessee Theatre. I spoke with her yesterday, and she is very excited for the chance to play on the same stage as one of the legends of Country [...]

Earlier this week we roamed over to Luckenbach to soak up a little of that Texas mystique, and I thought while we're in the neighborhood we oughta just keep goin' about the good old days. Well, as I said, back in the 1970s Texas became the epicenter of something called the outlaw country music movement. It kinda started around 1972, right about the time Willie Nelson's Nashville home burned down and he moved back to Austin. Later that year Nelson held his first Fourth of July festival at Dripping Springs - featuring Waylon Jennings, Tompall Glaser, Kris Kristofferson and Leon [...]

Andrew King : Sweet William's Ghost [ purchase ] Back in 1987-88, I was involved with a folk music coffeehouse in New Brunswick, NJ, called the Mine St Coffeehouse. One night, we had an English folk singer in named Nick Dow. He did a great performance, including Sweet William's Ghost. I had never heard the song before. Sweet William's Ghost is a Childe Ballad, but a fairly obscure one. And that's a shame, because it is a fine song. You may have noticed, however, that I did not post Nick Dow's [...]
