It looks like Steve Wynn really knew what he was doing when he offered Garth Brooks a place to perform at the Wynn in Las Vegas… and a personal jet. The singer's first twenty shows sold-out in five hours at 125 dollars per ticket with no extra charges. Every singer is probably wishing they will be able to have as successful a return from retirement as Garth Brooks apparently has. Now all that remains to be seen is how he will do in his first show back… hopefully the strings from his guitar aren't as rusty as one might expect. [...]

Halloween is coming! Zombieland is in theaters! IFC just ran a 1 hour doc on movie zombies! It's that most wonderful time of the year . . . There's a zip file, walking among the undead below. Oh, and before you start bitching: I know I didn't do every single letter. Deal with it. A is for Asher Roth. Yes, that's right, the mediocre Jewish rapper who was paired, by DJ Cinema on his recent "Stimulus" mixtape, with Jadakiss, Kanye West & Big Boi on " Is He Rich Like Me? " [...]

Look at it realistically — it's 2009, every band that ever made it out of the garage long enough to release a single is out there on the reunion circuit, building a set around the only album of theirs anyone ever bought and flogging the living beejeezus out of the phrase "in its entirety." And when it comes to solo artists, forget it — without the bother of other people to reconcile with, everybody and their brother is back on the boards these days. Rumor has it your mother is planning a comeback tour in 2010. So how much time [...]

Shaa'ir + Func , menwhopause (pictured) and Motherjane will represent India on a new compilation called PEACE that features artists from over 50 countries. The compilation will be released digitally in January 2010 with a pay-what-you-want system (minimum two Euros), and all the proceeds will go to Amnesty International's humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict. Over 100 artists are participating in this effort from regions as diverse as Palestine, Algeria, Burundi and Iceland. What's cool about this compilation is that it's not one of those no-cred comps that features absolutely unknowns. [...]

It was another eclectic month of music listening here in September, with a wider selection and a greater number of discs spun. Starting in August , I decided to keep track of every album I listened to in its entirety. The rules: Only an album heard in its entirety, even if it is spread over several days, will count. Repeat spins, partial listens, EPs, singles and background music don't count. This had to be active listening of a full album. I could listen in the car, at home, at work or even on headphones while mowing the lawn. Every [...]

The Austin City Limits Festival is this weekend, and while it will unfortunately take place minus Merry Swankster representation, there's no reason to sour an otherwise tremendous month of music in the Lone Star State. But just for fun, here's who'd I see if I were making the trip to Austin: Blitzen Trapper, Avett Brothers, the Walkmen, Phoenix, Los Amigos Invisibles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deer Tick, the Ravonettes, !!!, Grizzly Bear, Flogging Molly, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Bon Iver, Mos Def, the Decemberists, the Dodos, Heartless Bastards, Arctic Monkeys, Dirty Projectors, [...]

I heard from Marc of Buffetlibre, Barcelona. Their forthcoming project PEACE, in which they collaborate with Amnesty International, is getting some hype. And here is a gorgeous track from it named Shadow Pool by Boat Beam from Madrid. Artists from over 50 countries have joined in and as the press release states: "the resulting compilation will be digitally available worldwide in January 2010, letting listeners pick their own price for the album, with a minimum of €2. All proceeds will go to Amnesty International's humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict." Yes, I'm [...]

Since the humble beginnings of this site, there has been a constant source of all things rad, charitable and most epic, just throw a few descriptors at you. And who/what is this generous output of briliance, you ask? Why, it's Buffetlibre DJs ! In collaboration with Amnesty International, Buffetlibre DJs present: PEACE , an initiative that will include exclusive songs by musicians from over 50 countries. The goal is to merge a stylistic variety that represent the music scenes from all over, whether they [...]
When drummer Bill Berry amicably left R.E.M. in 1997, it threw the incredibly popular alt-rock giants into a spiral that left them diminished, yet ripe for experiment . Since then, Berry has made only a handful of on stage appearances, most recently stopping by to perform in hometown Athens this past Monday night. Normally, this sort of thing wouldn't be so newsworthy. However, Berry, who retired from the band in 1997 after suffering a brain aneurysm, appeared on stage this time with former bandmates Mike Mills and Peter Buck [...]

I'd been thinking about attending the Minus 5/Baseball Project/Steve Wynn show at Austin's Continental Club on Thursday. The problem is the show doesn't start until 10 p.m. and my friends and I are old. Translation: We need sleep before starting the Austin City Limits Music Festival marathon. So, my friends made a counter proposal, and a mighty fine one at that. Ian McLagan and the Bump Band will be playing at the Lucky Lounge starting at 6 p.m. McLagan, the keyboard player for the Faces and the Small Faces, is still terrific. His set at ACL a few [...]
