Back in 1997 Anthony Lovett and Matt Maranian wrote and published what eventually became my favorite Los Angeles guidebook. That book's name was (and is) LA Bizarro . A few years ago on this website I talked to Matt about the original book's undertaking ( fun interview with Matt here ). Since that time the two authors have now revised, updated and significantly expanded that original tome, and their collective output was published by Chronicle Books just this fall. In the 2009 updated edition of LA Bizarro (available at the time of this [...]
(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) Bear In Heaven just released Beast Rest Forth Mouth their sophomore LP and second release via our friends at the Hometapes label. Before their show at Lit Lounge last month during CMJ I [...]

Here's a thought: If you're going to do an article about the changing face of sports column writing four-years late with the angle being a mini-profile of ESPN's Bill Simmons , arguably America's favorite columnist (and New York Times # 1 best-selling non-fiction author), you should probably be much more thorough on both subjects than the New York Times cared to be.
After my long absence, it is only fitting that I return with an Eagles song. Where have I been? What have I been doing? That may all come out, in due time... or it may not. I am sitting here with about a million things I could write about but I do not think I am quite ready to broach most subjects yet. This blog is about music so it should be easy to just write about music and keep it simple. The problem is that for me, music is very personal and I rarely listen to any [...]

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" opens up with an image of a moon on screen suggesting the werewolves will come out and Bella's (Kristen Stewart) life is still dark and incomplete. The film ends with Bella taking an exaggerated breath of air, insinuating she will take a leap of faith with Edward. Everything in between is delivered exactly how Team Edward and Team Jacob fans want the plot to go down. WARNING: If you are on Team Edward then your [...]
my buddy cottrell does these awesome mini interviews of people who are doing their thing in LA. he invited me to do one and I think it turned out really great, he caught me just as I was moving into my new place and we talked about a variety of subjects. ABCLA:"DJ Skeet Skeet" from Kevin Boston on Vimeo . The ABC's of LA Eps. "DJ Skeet Skeet" Hosted by Cottrell Guidry directed/shot/edited by Kevin Boston Eps Info: [...]

Here's an odd confessional/seeking/searching type song. You might like it, you might hate it. Not sure how I feel about it, but it sure the heck matches the pics... you have to at least agree about that... right? So take it out for a listen: Too Much To Say mp3 I know this next photo is a cliche....so what?... it fires my spark plugs with the sun and all that... and it was [...]

(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) Last month Of Montreal multi-instrumentalist Jamey Huggins released his solo debut A Parallax I via OM's long-time label home, Polyvinyl Records. Recorded under the nom de tune James Husband, the recording spans five [...]

Growling Tiger - Money Is King (1979) ( buy ) Growling Tiger - The Train Blow (1979) ( buy ) First of all, I am deeply sorry for not posting those past weeks, I was too much busy with the Acclaimed music poll, which is now over. Just after submitting my list of favorite albums, I found this gem, that I would heve included if I could. I knew one track already, the first one I posted, the delicious "Money Is King", on a [...]
Presumably even hotter than 98 Degrees' first album, And Rising , Christy and Emily's track "105 & Rising," from their upcoming Superstition , has a rather disconcerting new video to go with the song's sludgy, uncomfortable guitar pulse. Featuring almost entirely white silhouettes against black backgrounds, the repetitive images lend a sense of tragedy to the mundane actions of the video's subjects. The track seems to be derived from somewhere between John Cage and the Melvins, its meandering guitar leads fitting the song's somber mood. [ Fader ]

Any comedy album that begins with the words "I fuckin' hate Sarah Palin" and ends with a song called "Eat Me Out" has to be worth hearing. In this audio version of Margaret Cho 's fifth concert film, she tackles all the subjects we've come to expect from one of America's most outspoken queer, feminist comedians: race, politics and, most graphically, sex. The anecdotes included on Beautiful range from a snarky retelling of the Larry Craig story ("the Republican from Idaho, or should I say: He da ho!") to a rundown of the time Cho visited Birmingham's [...]
It feels like State has been waiting forever for Ebony Bones! to release her debut album. The singer, who's real name is Ebony Thomas, ditched an established acting career in 2005 (she was a cast member in the British TV drama Family Affairs for seven years) and turned to music, starting off using beer bottles, pots and pans as percussion instruments whilst recording in her bedroom. Her early singles, 'We Know All About You' and 'Don't Fart on My Heart', both drew critical praise, being championed by the likes of Jo Wiley and Zane Lowe, and the attention [...]
What did we tell you? Just last month we featured She Is Danger after ramdomly stumbling upon their myspace site by chance. We know we've hit gold. When you think about dubstep, you don't really think about women behind the decks / laptops, making the music. You usually think about them at the front, trying to get close to the DJ guy, you usually think about women as subjects of either abuse or sexual objects in the lyrics of most grime songs. And that's why, when we found out that the people behind She [...]

As Torrance Shipman once said in the 2000 classic, Bring It On , "Missy's the poo...so take a big whiff." While that quote doesn't really apply here (aside from suggesting that Gaga is indeed 'the poo'), the point is this: As the driving force behind the writing and recording process of her music, the creative director of her album artwork, music videos, tour visuals, merchandising and just about every other minute facet of her career, Lady Gaga is a very new kind of pop star; one that sings live, writes and records, dances, styles photoshoots, [...]
This has nothing to do with the new Animal Collective video for "In The Flowers" but how's this for eclectic interview subjects. Later this week we're chatting to Animal Collective's Panda Bear a few days later we'll interview surfer Mark Occhilupo. Weird. Actually maybe they are kinda related. Enjoy the audio/visual freak out below...
(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.) The Grateful Dead are misunderstood - I've said as much on here multiple times in the past. They also created some of the finest American rock & roll of the twentieth century. Once [...]
Hey everyone, welcome back to Sunday Skool. Today I want to introduce you to a FREE site that I turn to quite often to learn a whole host of things. Here you can learn how to use an MPC-60, how to produce a remix, how to construct beats, how to properly take samples, and even a little bit about DJ etiquette. But more importantly, this database has over 240 video archives with interviews of some of the most influential artists, producers, Deejays, record label owners, etc. Of course I am talking about the Red Bull Music Academy in [...]
It's generally acknowledged that Ray Manzarek is the most annoying interview for music fans to have to sit through in all of rock history. Even the 36-second clip of an upbeat Ray talking about the continued popularity of The Doors is a little annoying. Beyond Manzarek, however, there's probably some strong competition for the #2 slot. This came up recently while I told my close personal friend, Townsman andyr , about a the Lynyrd Skynyrd portion of a surprisingly good Al Kooper interview that I read in [...]
