The simple truths, moments when reflection during a key event can spring a new way, a profound epiphany, and give birth to hidden wisdom can come when one least expects it. Consider the end of a war, and what happens to the soldiers who may still be fighting in a particular battle, during a specific campaign, neither knowing nor caring about war's end. Well, that is exactly what happens in a film about the closing moments of World War II as a group of Japanese soldiers, during a campaign on Burma, fighting [...]

B almorhea has, to me, always been one of those bands that has epitomized the ideals of instrumental music. While that may sound like an overly bold statement, I draw attention to the fact that I do realize there is a huge difference between the ideals and the execution of them. Balmorhea's self-titled debut was one of my favorite albums of 2007, owing mostly to the subtle balance of acoustic guitar and piano: the resulting sound was nothing short of spectacular. Three years later we are at the band's fourth full-length release, after the aforementioned self-titled release, 2008's [...]
Director : Rob Zombie Release Date : 1 February Review by Paul Metcalf I like Rob Zombie's style. I like what he tries to do with his movies and I think he has a good future as a director. One thing I don't like though is when he gets it wrong. A lot of people will say he gets it wrong with all his movies of course but I thought. House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects were two good [...]

The UK masters of the fun dance jams Hot Chip returned this week with their latest release titled One Life Stand. As anyone who has heard their records before or seen their live show knows, no band really infuses a fun vibe into their music and genuinely seems to be loving what they are doing any more than these guys, and that great trend continues once again on this fine effort. The record is still brand new, so this could change, but though I'm not sure that it has the instantly recognizable surefire dance floor hits that the [...]

Who : Yeasayer Title : Oddblood Label : Secretly Canadian RIYL : Bear In Heaven, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, hippies Thoughts : When All Hour Cymbals was released we were pretty excited for this new band that was burning up everyone's ears thanks to the outstanding first single "2080". What we learned is that Yeasayer had made on perfect song and filled a record with a bunch of mediocre [...]

Adam is an unconventional love story about two strangers falling in love and experiencing some unique complications in their relationship. Written and directed by Max Mayer, Adam stars Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher, and Amy Irving. Rose Byrne plays school teacher and aspiring writer Beth, who has just moved into a new apartment building. Beth soon finds herself drawn to an extremely intelligent, but socially awkward neighbor named Adam (Hugh Dancy). Both characters are lonely in their own way, and are struggling [...]

[ Baobab Secret ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy mp3s ) We love to drag geography into discussions of dance music, and with Mr. Raoul K, it's hard not to. Turned onto to electronic dance music after moving from the Ivory Coast to Hamburg, his reputation as a producer is founded on a growing catalog of euphoric and rather continental club tracks that swirl with traditional African elements. Granted, African motifs are hardly anomalous in dance music, but they've held an uncommonly prominent role in this particular producer's discography, and not [...]

The unusually glassy, tinkling sound of the great Philip Jeck rehearsing for a new piece, An Ark for the Listener , inspired by Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem The Wreck Of The Deutschland . "An aspiration in answer to an inspiration, out of music shaped by all the sea has claimed, as is the inevitable shipwreck of our existence. [...]

An artist from Austin and not a subtle chord change in sight. Yep this tune from Kat Edmonson is shorn of much of the decoration that you'd expect from that neck of the woods. That doesn't in the least bit inhibit its ability to sound spellbinding however; all you'll need this cold winter evening is Kat's voice and some background sounds made with a Fisher-price toy. 'Lucky' clocks in at sub 3 minutes but is blessed with such clarity you can be assured of a genuine jolt of happiness. KD Kat Edmonson - [...]

After months of not-so-subtle clues and performances together, Pete Wentz has revealed that he and ex-Chiodos frontman Craig Owens will be working on a project together that will be officially announced later this month...
Danny Paul Grody's Fountain is the first full-length solo recording by one of the founding members of San Francisco's Tarentel and the Drift. For those familiar with these music/art based acts, Fountain is a sweet reminder of Grody's subtle guitar work -- a cornerstone of both projects that often doesn't get center stage in the ambitious mix of instrumentation, field recordings, and sound-scapes that make up the bulk of these bands' output. Not that Fountain...

Following their thrilling success, T he Diogenes Club returns for its second release. Their first EP Do You Know How To Feel It? gained outstanding reviews as well as being played by Pete Tong on Radio 1. Once again, it results in an excellent EP combining flair, tenacity and charm. Urban Torque (label) is gaining more speed in our opinion and with the likes of Relation and The Diogenes Club coming along with their usual stable of artists, we get real [...]

4. The National - Alligator (Beggars Banquet) 2005 Of the 50 records that I'm (slothfully, hey it's February, how was your St. Brigid's day?) working my way through here I don't think any had the slow burning success that this one had. Positive reviews but negligible sales for the band's first two albums had established The National as something of a critic's band and when they released their third they probably can't have been too surprised that it was the same old story all [...]
A subtle, bright track to start off the Monday morning blues (or blacks or grays or what have you), this new single from the boys of Monarchy--check their excellent Ellie Goulding "Starry Eyed" remix as well when you have a...

It's been a while since a real intelligent art punk band has emerged from the sewers of the dying underground. With the up-and-coming return of pop punk hitting the mainstream (knocking cry baby bullshit emo bands out of the tear-filled water), it's almost hard to understand why any artist in their right mind would want to try and handle such a quickly burning torch. Enter Castevet and their debut album Summer Fences . Now we're talking. Break out the acoustic guitars, PBR, and lack of self respect. It's [...]

It's very fitting that BC's Aidan Knight is traveling the West Coast in the luxurious comfort of Dan Mangan's van. Not for similarity of sound, but both BC boys have that something... whether it's the ability to turn the simplest of chords into something meaningful, the subtle turn of phrase that puts you along side them as the story is told or how they can cram layer after layer into a beautiful composition and never get lost in the mix. Whatever "it" is, both young song writers possess that talent in spades. The thing is while [...]
