( Editor's note: Two straight weeks of entropic wandering on Lazy Saturday, principally because of the following: I'm tired. I'm stressed out. I'm busy. I've got a grant burning, a paper cooking, IEP progress reports to write, hogs to feed, a harem to tend to, capital gains taxes to calculate, and so forth. I don't have any space left in the old cognitive load to give you a well-developed, cohesive bit of content today. You get a numbered list. The items contained therein are not connected. Unless you think that the universe has thrown them together to be reflective of [...]
Breaking Benjamin was one of the few modern rock bands on the radio that, if you have heard any song in its catalog prior, could be immediately recognized. The band's sound is indicative of early '00s modern rock, while also now and then being more Filter-esque or technically proficient, primarily on guitar during 2002's Saturate, and from then on with bass and drums. As something of a less lyrically skilled Earshot-type outfit, Breaking Benjamin is often labeled as being post-grunge, but this writer feels post-industrial was once more accurate, with such tight rhythms and a lot of [...]
Taking advantage of the lack of any real competition, HMV is experimenting with ten temporary stores around the UK this Christmas. Who can explain what's going on in HMV's minds better than temproary store czar Gennaro Castaldo ? Pin him down, Sky News. HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo has admitted more temporary shops may be on the cards next year. That's put the matter into context. Thank you. There's a sense that this is an admission from HMV that their main (or, at least, most lucrative) market is people buying stuff to give to [...]

There are times when Beyonce goes on one of her overly-flamboyant, "tomorrow's R&B"-soundtracked tangents that modern pop/ R&B brilliance emerges. We've experienced that with "Upgrade U" and "Single Ladies" , two tracks that tested the limits of our comfort with sultry vocals being lain atop the most oddly-constructed, mechanized-hip hop-soul grooves, and ultimately won out by having sturdy enough hooks and themes at their core. But for every one of those gems, there's a handful of others within that same style that largely fail at justifying the point in her trying so hard to [...]

Today, it's exactly 15 years since I first heard the debut album by dEUS . Now, you may be wondering how I can be so precise on the timing, so I'll explain. 'Worst Case Scenario' was one of the CD shaped presents I ripped the wrapping off on my 17th birthday. Today is 15 years since my 17th birthday. Hence it's also 15 years since I heard that record. All of which is my completely unsubtle way of saying that today is my birthday. Hurrah for me. There is however an ulterior [...]

Scotland's finest Detroit techno artists. Don't get the credit they deserve South of the Border. And Scotland doesn't seem to love its electronic innovators in the same way that Postcard is revered. Artists, club owners, label owners. What more do you want? I guess we could do without more re-releases of Positive Eduction mixes. Like so many techno artists, Glasgow, Scotland-based Slam is a duo, comprising Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan. They also embody the genre's tradition of not limiting themselves to one activity. Slam started out in the [...]

I was talking to someone today about music and the discussion led to an argument about the weak points of hip-hop versus the strength of indie rock. He said he thought one of the strong points of indie rock was the extreme creativity that exists in bands like Animal Collective. They are undoubtedly one of the captains of indie rock, and at the same time they push the limits of the genre to an extreme that few others have reached. He argued that in hip-hop, the popular artists were all repetitive and tame, and the "indie" or "underground" artists were [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] [ #40-36 ] [ #35-31 ] [ #30-26 ] 25. Kid A - Radiohead (2000) While I completely understand my own enthusiasm for this album, I can't say that I really get why everyone else loves it so much. I've noticed that it's already topped some other 'best of the decade' [...]
Meh! Meh I say! Dead Or Alive You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (Extended Mix) Brand New Lover (Bubble Mix) Did you know Jessica Simpson tried to cover You Spin Me Round? She failed because she's a no-talent piece of trash who should fall off the face of the Earth. Seriously. How many great songs does that vapid talentless nimrod need to butcher? She fucked up that song, Robbie Williams epic power ballad "Angels," "Take My Breath Away" and "These Boots Are Made For Walking." [...]
The Cliffs of Insanity - Mark Knopfler (from the Princess Bridge soundtrack ) Today's winner in the 'huh, are you serious?' category is Jason Zengerle at The New Republic (who I normally quite like): I was pretty shocked by this new poll that found that 52 percent of Republican voters think ACORN stole the 2008 presidential election for Obama. I wanted to get some perspective, though, so I looked for polls that assessed voters' feelings about the 2000 elections. I figured that, even with hanging chads and all, fewer Democratic voters would [...]

Friday, November 20, 2009 We are creeping, quite quickly actually in to the looming holiday season and the studios are sort of coughing up the small game in lieu of the enormous money makers to come. Of course, this is the weekend of Twilight, so perhaps I'm just talking out of my ass, but this feels like the calm before the storm. An animated flick from the creators of Shrek, a slightly chintzy looking sports flick, and of course Bela and Edward - consider me non-plussed. It's the limited films I'm interested in this [...]

SOUNDS FAMILYRE RECORDS RELEASING ORTOLAN DEBUT FULL-LENGTH TIME ON A STRING ON MARCH 9, 2010 A hot minivan barreling down the highway, filled to the brim with siblings, sleeping bags, and travel checkers sets—this is the setting for a decades-old American tradition upheld by millions: arguing over the radio dial until consensus is happily found at that hallowed institution, the oldies station. Thus begins the story of Ortolan, four young women from Southern New Jersey with music-loving, art-teacher parents, devoted to each other in laughter, bickering, love, and play. Sisters Stephanie (16), Brianna (18), Lara (20), [...]

Interpol get a lot of shit heaped upon them. From the constant references to Joy Division & The Chameleons, down to the criticism of Paul Banks' admittedly oft-baffling lyrics. 2007's Our Love To Admire seemed like the flashpoint for everyone who'd been patiently waiting for a major screwup to release steady streams of contempt and disdain in Interpol's direction. I actually included OLTA in my Best Albums of 2007 list, and while in retrospect I'm not sure I didn't put it there just to piss off people who wouldn't stop prattling on about [...]
Last night's softball game was ridiculous. Los Nuevos Expos had our entire roster in attendence; nobody was injured or on vacation. In a very closely-contested match against a worthy opponent, we rallied late and held on for a clutch victory. In our last turn at-bat, we were down three runs. I came up with no one out and a runner on first, and reached safely on an infield single. After a walk, the next batter Andrew hit an inside-the-park grand slam to put us up by one run. Later in the inning (with two outs), James hit a mammoth home [...]
