Ombarrops! is the new album from quirky Polish band The Car Is On Fire. The Warsaw-based group recruited John McEntire (Tortoise, Sea & Cake) to produce the record. The result is a set of songs that sound like the bastard lovechild of Stereolab and The Fall. Check out the title track and more here. It's quite entertaining stuff. " C4 , the world's first Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, is a unique vocal ensemble in New York City dedicated to performing music composed in the last twenty-five years." A big vocal choir that doesn't do Handel's "Messiah"? Yep, they do nutty stuff like Karen Siegel 's " Obsessions from the Twittersphere" and " Confessions from the Blogosphere ," both of which collect actual internet blather, to both humorous [...]

Seefeel are a post-rock group (whatever you take to mean by that term). They get on these pages as they were quite influential in their quiet way and becuase they were on the sainted Warp Records for a short while. Seefeel formed during 1992 in London, England; with Mark Clifford on guitar, Mark Van Hoen on bass, Justin Fletcher on drums and Sarah Peacock on vocals and guitar. During 1992, Mark Van Hoen was replaced by Daren Seymour on bass. They released their first EPs and first album on [...]

An album that not only set the tone for the new Chicago prog rock, but also cemented the musical niche for Thrill Jockey Records. Here, multi-instrumentalists John McEntire, Dan Bitney, John Herdon, Douglas McCombs, and Bundy K. Brown share equal responsibility and trust in each other, pouring out a thick stew of meditative grooves, light production experiments, and rusty guitar-string ambience -

Moments of creepy post-rock brilliance give way to jarring stops and starts, but as a complete package Chimeric meshes only slightly more often than not. Radian are doing their thing here, and if it works for you, it's because you knew you were going to dig it to begin with. Filed under: News , Video It's impossible as all heck to try to pin down Tortoise 's sound, so just what the heck do the guys in the band listen to for fun? Bassist Doug McCombs and drummer John Herndon were caught shopping at Amoeba Records lately and bared the contents of their shopping bags for Amoeba's film crew. Interestingly, both band members separately purchased the vinyl edition of Earthless' 'Live at Roadburn.' "I bought this live record because they were on my mind, because we're playing a show with [...]

Hellz and Mosley Tribes have teamed up to design two limited colourways of the Chambers sunglasses. One has a black frame with a red interior and grey gradient lenses, while the other is a tortoise frame with a jade green interior and spice brown gradient lenses. Each frame features a gold metal plaque on the inside as well as the Hellz familiar cracked bottle metal plaque at the end of the left temple. [...]
Hello Blogosphere, I'd like to introduce you to Waterloo, Ontario's Pick A Piper . A collective featuring Brad Weber of Caribou , Angus Fraser of Tenth of May , Dan Roberts ex- Winter Equinox and Clint Scrivener, they've written a handful of carefully crafted songs of tribal psych with heavy doses of percussion and electronic flourishes. Gorgeous textures, interesting vocal melodies. Very refreshing for my ears. You'll also like this if you're not normally satisfied with one drum kit on the stage. Pick A Piper perform with two (like bands [...]
Fun promo video here of John and Doug from Tortoise doing a little shopping at Amoeba while on tour.
The idea of the "drummer as bandleader" is an oddity in most circles. The mind typically jumps to Phil Collins, or at least a goof with one of those Garth Brooks microphones that wraps around the head. Even in the jazz world, the drummer/composer isn't super-common. There are plenty of good examples, to be sure (Max Roach, Gene Krupa), but the composing is typically left to more melodic instrumentalists: the pianists, trumpeters, saxophonists. But, lately, it seems that the seemingly odd combination is popping up left and right. Chicago's Mike Reed is a great drummer, but his People Places and [...]

Being bored late at night after getting home from work can be a good or bad thing. Typically it just has me sitting down watching sleazy horror films until I feel like it's a good time to head to bed or in other cases I start perusing various online retailers and the money sucking land that is eBay. Sometimes it unearths riches; sometimes it turns up some duds. The San Francisco based group Ventid find themselves among the notables that have turned up in recent weeks with their debut album [...]
Risil is a group headed by Guillermo Scott Herren (Prefuse 73, Savath Savalas) consisting of Tyondai Braxton (Battles), Roberto Carlos Lange (Savath Savalas), Ryan Rasheed (LebLaze), Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (School of Seven Bells), John McEntire (Tortoise), Eva Puyuelo Muns (Savath Savalas), Zach Hill (Hella), Laurenz Pike (Triosk, Pivot) and members of Sunn O))). "Non Meters Vol. 1" is a densely layered excursion into a melodious, textured, fuzzy, droned out, powerful noise. The beauty found in this release is immaculate. The Deheza sister's voices jump back and forth singing "There Has to Be" and [...]
