BOAT who are poised to release their third album Setting the Paces this week are like one of those new and improved products: Now better sounding and with more pop hooks! Not that the old version was inferior by any stretch of the imagination, and not to worry long-time fans, Boat is still Boat. The animal imagery, falsetto choruses, and sincere yet over the top delivery is all still there, only now it sounds so much better. Setting the Paces is like a rush of sugar to the head. The band is now officially a four piece [...]
![Fred Thomas: Flood [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1953709_lg.jpg)
Directly upon the heels of two stellar releases, Every Scene Needs A Center by Tullycraft and Daughters And Suns by The Owls, Magic Marker Records treats us to a bit of a surprise. Where the label's typical release is inundated with pop and twee, Fred Thomas ' Flood can almost be considered experimental folk, or even freak folk. Learning Thomas' history in pop will help the listener understand this release and its home on Magic Marker. [...]
I had set aside a number of singles clubs for one of the distros that carry HHBTM stuff to offer them to mom & pop shops. I set aside 15 clubs too many so when I said I was out I guess I was wrong. I have 15 full singles clubs ready to ship. So if you haven't subscribed yet this is your last chance before having to track them down on ebay. Also for everyone who subscribed already the clubs have all shipped out at this point. I have received 11 clubs back with bad addresses, so I'll get [...]

So, this is how it's going to be. Last.fm features a list of personalized recommendations, that change constantly, based on the bands you are listening to. Every week we are going to try out said recommendations and pick our favourite band from the ones recommended to us, which we will then proceed to feature on our blog. This week that band is: (*clapclapclapclapclapclapclap clap*) Hutch and Kathy Last.fm tags: indie, pop, boy-girl duet, [...]

First String Teenage High: The Songs of Tullycraft Played By People Who Aren't , was orignially co-released in 2003 by AAJ & Bumblebear records. The initial run was only 500 cds and has been completely sold out for quite some time. This was back in the day before iTunes, Amazon MP3, Emusic, etc...were easily accessible to small indie labels. First String Teenage High started as a labor of love by Bumblebear Records owner Jimmy Hughes (current member of Elf Power & mastermind behind wonderful band Folklore). With Sean Tollefson's support, Hughes lovingly complied the tracks over a two [...]
If you need to put a smile on your face, or at least widen your already-existing one, there's no surefire way to do that than to see Tullycraft play live. There's an exuberance to their shows and songs, a sincerity of sweetness and light that could knock over even the most jaded hipster. So it was with no slight sadness that I read their MySpace update back in March that said the following..."

Several weeks ago, members of the Contrast Podcast traded mixed CDs on an alphabetical theme. I was given the Letter U, to find bands and songs beginning with that letter, for Agnes at It All Started With Carbon Monoxide . Nat at Mini-Obs sent me a CD based on the Letter T. Along with the CD, she sent me the postcard above. The first thing I thought was, "Look at the ass on that Amish boy!" Yes, even grandmas can appreciate a firm butt. We had to [...]
I love folks with great music taste and extra time to futz around with iMovie. Thank you fanella55! You did a great job putting one of my favorite Fishboy songs ("Proper Name Spelling Bee") to digital video. I recently saw someone do this sort of thing with a Tullycraft song; OldFlat24 set "The Punks Are Writing Love Songs" to scenes from High School Musical and it's rad! Sure, this is the first I've seen of HSM, but it looks pretty Degrassi cool when edited to three minutes). Have you seen any more examples of this? [...]

"Well, you can keep the punk rock..." So was the 'Twee' thing kick-started by Tweenet in the mid '90s? Did I read that they were using the term with irony because [...]

And on with our San Francisco Popfest coverage coming to a close, here's our post about the Saturday evening show at the Rickshaw Stop featuring the Smittens, The Magic Bullets, My Teenage Stride, Northern Portrait, and our very own Seattle darlings, Tullycraft. Tonight was the night. The crowning glory of indie pop. I'd been calling this night the best show of the year long before it even happened. read more

Calm Down Dad - Helen Love Some times you just want a little bit of snark. And who can provide that better than British twenty-somethings raised on punk and bubblegum. This track lives in a strange place somewhere in between The Dead Milkmen, the Ramones, and Tullycraft. And while it's a bit of ironic fluff, you can't help but think that for all its silliness, it captures things far more deeply than a 'serious' take might. And I just can't get enough of the little bit of "White Riot" they drop at [...]

The hills are alive with the sound of music. Which hills, you ask? The steep rolling hills of San Francisco will be hosting the San Francisco Popfest 2009 starting tonight and running until Sunday. What kind of music? Nothing but good, clean indie pop. Busy with last minute preparations, I interrupted Andrew Lison, member of the organizing committee, to ask him about the festival, the genre, and imaginary indie pop supergroups. If you're in the Bay Area sometime during the next few days, make sure to grab a burrito and then head down to one of the venues and enjoy [...]

Greg of Oh No Oh My by Adrian Bischoff SF Popfest which runs this Thursday through Sunday is in its inaugural year. I'm all for more grass roots festivals and people doing cool stuff without the benefit of the Livenations of the world. I'm even more for good bands playing good bills. One such bill is Thursday's show at the Rickshaw with Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, locals Still Flyin', Oh No Oh My and Swede Pelle Carlberg. I've seen Oh No [...]

![BOAT: Songs That You Might Not Like [Album Review]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/1709096_lg.jpg)
When I discovered BOAT ( MySpace ), I pre-ordered Songs That You Might Not Like and started a FensePost feature article on the band within ten minutes of initial discovery. Still, when I received the album, it took a while for me to give it a full listen and it took a few weeks to really appreciate the music. A week and a half ago I drove to Spokane and finally gave it a good spin. Multiple listens, a few coffee stains, and two worn edges later, the result was miraculous. [...]

We're back again with the Friday list, that never does go out on Friday anyway, but sometime between late late Friday and early Sunday. This was supposed to go out next week, but then, in the life of a music blogger (who most likely does this kind of thing on the side), life gets in the way sometimes. But we persist! Posting is an itch that must be scratched. My analogy might be odd, but my purpose, true. Now for the list. I dedicate this list to my precocious 6 year old son, who lately, has [...]
