Mixtape: Twenty Years of Noise Pop (Podcast #269) In February, the Noise Pop Music Festival turns twenty by gathering over one hundred local and touring bands from across the indie spectrum for a week of exciting concerts all over the City. Two decades of championing independent music is an accomplishment worth celebrating, and this mixtape collects twenty bands that have performed at Noise Pop events in years past. As you'll hear, a whole bunch of big names graced Noise Pop bills before achieving fame, as past festivals [...]

Where Is Parker Griggs? is a collection of songs from the excellent Alive Naturalsound label, with exclusive tracks from artists such as Hacienda,Buffalo Killers, Black Diamond Heavies, Radio Moscow and more. Over the past three years it has undoubtedly become one of our favourite labels and we have posted many times about the bands on their roster including Henry's Funeral Shoe, Gardens and White Noise Sound . Founded by Patrick Boissel 17 years ago the label specialises in garage rock, psych, punk, deep blues and Tejas garage-soul and were the [...]

2011 has turned out to be the year in music where I found myself resting, and drinking deeply. If you look at the three major music festivals I went to in 2011 (other than SXSW, which is always a debaucherous 1000-mph wonderful mess) they were all of the scenic, restorative type: camping at Sasquatch at Washington's Columbia River Gorge, Telluride Bluegrass where I pitched my tent right by a rushing river, and Doe Bay Fest on isolated Orcas Island in the San Juans. The ethos of these music festivals, more than anything, is a [...]

What a theme! 'Eighty Days In Eighty Songs'! A Mathkid & Special Interests serie mixtape! Milky Ray: "This mix was born with the idea to tell the story of five friends riding through the United States of America by bike. From New York to Los Angeles, nearly 4000 miles in 80 days. The memories of the hours of freedom will be true companions for the rest of their lives. It was a pleasure to put the music together that reflects this unique journey. Read more here!". The Dead Ships exploded onto my radar earlier this year by happenstance; a billing with another band I had reviewed combined with me inadvertently stumbling upon a write-up about them on Buzz Bands LA . I checked out their first EP and loved it , and then had the opportunity to premiere the Amaze/Friends By Default 7" - The Dead Ships second release. Those two tracks were a cut above even the first. Then the band hit the road for a cross country tour and a trip to CMJ. I tracked 'em down once [...]

There's something a little silly about sharing a video called "Meet Two Gallants " on an SF-centric music blog, but this clip finds the bearded duo discussing their return (and their new music) and performing live in Chicago. You can see more videos from this series here . Two Gallants are touring China and South Korea in November, and the band has been hard at work recording a new album. Tom Waits' first album in seven years, Bad as Me , is in stores this week, as is the first listenable holiday record of the year, A Very She & Him Christmas (courtesy of M. Ward and Zoey Deschanel). Welsh power duo cranks up blues-rock riffs Making the reductionist power trio format one better, this Welsh duo features brothers Aled and Brennig Clifford on guitar/vocals and drums, respectively. With cues from the White Stripes, Black Keys, Two Gallants and others, The Clifford's buzz through heavy blues-rock originals that offer room for Aled to display his guitar playing prowess. Unlike the sonic pounding of labelmates Radio Moscow, Henry's Funeral Shoe takes a more nuanced, and less psych-influenced, approach to their jamming. Aled's playing follows more in the vein of British blues-rock giants like Peter [...]

San Francisco's Independent was packed with the feverishly dedicated fans of the one and only Two Gallants for night-two of the duo's double-bill at the venue. I say "dedicated" because the band has not released any new material since 2007 and as far as I'm concerned, hasn't had much of an impact on the folk scene since 2004's The Throes . What I seemingly forgot was, this is a San Francisco-based act and when a band comes home, they get their everlasting support, especially when it's a band as talented as these two. [...]

Date Monday, Sept. 19th Location Mohawk Doors 900p Tickets $12 @ the Door It's slightly unfortunate that this show follows the hangover from ACL, as Two Gallants are definitely a great live act, worthy of a measley $12.
