Photo Credit: Audrey Leon Whether or not the crowd was fully prepared for the event at hand, The Pixies certainly were, delivering a performance worthy of their legend and of the landmark record on display. The sound, appropriately, was simply enormous. The Pixies took the stage Friday night at the Aragon Ballroom to perhaps the most adoring crowd I have ever stood in. I mention this because it's interesting to see a band play to a group [...]

By Jodi Root Five years ago, almost to the day, my life changed. The impossible became not only possible, but actual history and the Pixies reunited. They said it could never happen, but the moment I heard that Frank Black and Kim Deal let bygones be bygones and embarked on a reunion tour in 2004, you better believe I was one of the first ticketholders. It's crazy to look back on this, as five years ago I had driven 4.5 hours from northern Wisconsin to catch what I would remember as one of the happiest nights [...]
It's hard to say very much about seeing one of your favourite bands for the first time in about fifteen years. You know all the words; even if they start with a series of B-sides you can sing along. Everyone else does the same, even the ones who weren't born when Come On Pilgrim came out. At times, like the first few lines of 'Hey', the Academy sings louder than Frank Black, hits all the notes, gets the timing exactly right. It's powerfully affecting. It's great. But: if they're only playing Doolittle , [...]

Here's a random mix for you. No reason for it. Just some songs that I've not gotten round to fitting in any posts but that I think deserve to be heard. So I thought I'd herd them all together like rogue sheep into this random mix. Enjoy. Broken Social Scene - xerxes (live acoustic session version) Coldplay - we never change (live acoustic session version) original version available on 'Parachutes' The Dandy Warhols - not if you were [...]

Today's diaries come from (in no particular order) AP "Chinatown" Kryza, David "I'm such an asshole" Robinson, Mark "Eagle Eye" Stock (MS), Matthew "Laker Fan" Singer (MSR), Justin "Kickenbaque" Kent (videos), Jenny "British Intern" Booth, Michael "What Year is it?" Mannheimer, Matthew "Carnage" Korfhage and Casey "Opposite of Fair" Jarman. It's been a helluva long weekend. Hope you had as much fun (and drank less) than we did. -Ed. Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Last night at Dante's in Portland, Ore., Black Francis , aka Frank Black , stood alone in the spotlight and played acoustic versions of Pixies songs and his solo work. Diehard Pixies lovers mainly comprised the packed Musicfest NW audience in hopes the fellow Portlander would oblige them with some classic tunes. It wasn't until an hour into Francis' two-hour set when their wishes were granted. Donning a black leather jacket and black rimmed glasses, Francis [...]

Frank Yang I haven't done any sort of formal review of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' latest album It's Blitz! , mainly because I think it'd be redundant. Not just because it's already gotten largely universal praise , but because it should be evident to anyone listening to it that's it's a wholly splendid record, and to my ears, the band's best yet and one of the top of the year from anyone. Heady praise? Yes, but considering my head is pretty much consistently enveloped in a bubble of [...]
Simply dressed in an untucked gray flannel and shades, Frank Black had no backing band, but one guitar, some water and some wine. Do you know who else performed with water and wine? Jesus Christ, Black was in a gracious mood for the large group of alt-rock survivors who gathered at the Grog Shop on Thursday night. His performance was almost Pollard-esque in scope (30+ songs, nearly two hours), drawing from his many post-Pixies endeavors (Frank Black, Black Francis, Frank Black and the Catholics) as well as his still very much beloved band. Though he [...]
Kind of. Frank Black talks with Minnesota Public Radio's Mary Lucia about some of his songs. I don't know if it clarifies anything, but he does a nice solo acoustic rendition of "Velouria," below, so that's something. Here's the full interview:
Ever found yourself thinking, "Hmmm, I wonder what the hell Black Francis meant in, oh, every single Pixies song..."? You're not alone. And lucky for you, in this interview with Minnesota Public Radio's Mary Lucia, he takes the time to explain some of his songwriting ideas, concepts and inspirations. And by that, we mean he talks a lot about hangovers and lemurs, but it's still totally awesome. Additionally, the interview is peppered with acoustic versions of Pixies songs, including this lovely rendition of 'Velouria,' featured above.

However we pine for our Pixies , we always have Frank Black/Black Francis . He was recently on MPR's The Current , where he played things like this. Anyone else planning on catching the Doolittle tour? Black Francis - Velouria (Pixies)(Live on The Current, 7-10-2009)(mp3)
Enjoy this week's glorious performance of 'Velouria' in the feature below. MP3: Pixies - Ed Is Dead

Every month we take a look back at some of the records that have had a huge impact on the music world and this time the Pixies take centre stage. A great band relies on friction, combustible tension between members, hatred even. With this comes great music. By the time Bossanova came along the Pixies were at breaking point, a feat all the more remarkable considering the last album they released was the acclaimed Doolittle they should have been swimming in the dollars, picking [...]

Photo by velouria! Toronto electro-duo Woodhands will be embarking on a US tour this Thursday May 7th in the wake of their recent Paper Bag Records Dancer EP . Woodhands has been touring pretty much constantly, with stops across North America, Japan, China, & upcoming dates in Europe. Their live show has to be seen to be believed: no pre-programmed samples, no laptops, no safety net: just two hyperkinetic, high-energy performers bringing the party as hard as possible, a little different each time. May: 07 [...]

The Bad Plus: For All I Care Jazz trio, the Bad Plus, welcome for the first time a vocalist into the group to aide them in their unique renditions of rock covers and interpretations of 20th century classical pieces. In addition to being their first album with a vocalist, For All I Care is their first all-covers album. The Bad Plus have always had a unique way of covering rock songs. Their previous covers of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", The Pixies' "Velouria", and the theme to the 1981 movie Chariots of Fire, all [...]
It's just occued to me that Pixies have never appeared on this site. So to put things right this is probably the best sounding Pixies bootleg I've ever heard. Recorded in Switzerland in 1991 the set spans all five albums and captures Black Francis and co. in top form. "The Happening" sounds particularly fine. This was originally issued years ago as the "Subbaculture" bootleg the cover of which can be seen above. Enjoy. Download Here [...]
