CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Dr. Dog Appear at El Rey on Tuesday Night Monday 10/5/09 [Pick of the Night] School of Seven Bells / Warpaint / Phantogram @ Troubadour ($15) – The ex-Secret Machines guitar player. Photography by Alice Magdalene C. An epic weekend deserves some epic music, don't you think? CNote Art Show was wonderful, we went up Friday for the preview, after exploring around, found my two pieces. Took a little mobile twitpic action... Ah, fame... lol. Who's gonna live forever ? Neither sold, but that's okay, if I was [...]
The same year that Metallica was releasing their ground breaking album Master of Puppets , there was a little ole band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who released a disc that latched onto my heart like one of them face sucking bastards from the Alien series. The band is called Die Kreuzen , and maybe you've heard of them. Then again, maybe you haven't. Back in the day, they were never one of those bands that sat at the tip of everyone's tongue, but they were influential to a varying degree to a number of avant metal and [...]

With 2006's The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me , Brand New set a new standard for alternative rock bands, showing that introspective lyrics and pained wailing could be accompanied by more than three-chord nonsense. It was, in every sense of the word, a triumph. It's with that in mind that I listen to Daisy , the New York outfit's fourth album and feel slightly betrayed. Where previous Brand New albums were meticulously arranged and performed, Daisy 's madness appears to have no method to it, and comes out sounding like an unfocused, broken mishmash of [...]

As we begin to embark upon the fall television season, which has me excited for tonight's premiere of the 5th year of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia , I wanted to write a quick review of what was easily the best summer season of television series in a long time, maybe ever. There were a half dozen or so shows that I made appointment viewing in the past couple months, and with True Blood 's wacky and somewhat disappointing finale Sunday, only Entourage remains as a summer series that is continuing into fall. But Ari and [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Jason Sheehan doesn't have a cooking show on television or own a trendy restaurant, but his memoir Cooking Dirty: A Story of Life, Sex, Love and Death in the Kitchen is a fascinating glimpse at professional kitchens. From his early days washing dishes at a pizzeria to working in a variety of diners, delis and other restaurants, Sheehan captures the chaos of the dinner rush and the bravado (and sometimes stupidity) [...]

Part of me that thinks bio-dynamics is a bit weird. Part of me also thinks there might be something in it after all. I seem to be vacillating between the two poles right now. One biodynamic notion that makes me prick up my ears is the semi homeopathic approach to weed control. Not all weeds are bad; nettles are an excellent fertilizer and dandelions are useful as a compost accelerant. Weeds are also unbelievably bloody hardy. Along with cockroaches, there is no doubt in my mind that weeds would survive a nuclear holocaust. I used a weed flame [...]

Meat Puppets Sewn Together Megaforce Records Release Date: 05.12.09 As rock bands go, Arizona's Meat Puppets have never been what one would classify as normal. At their calmest you could say that their approach to music is unorthodox and at their wildest well, they are flat out, full-speed-ahead weird. Since forming in Paradise Valley, Arizona in early 1980, the band has released seminal albums, including the SST classic Meat Puppets 2 , created their own style of punk rock by combining psychedelic rock (and [...]

I should probably start off with an announcement that And/Or Gallery will soon be closing its doors. Keri, the assistant at And/Or, sent us this: "Yes, And/Or is closing for the moment. Paul is moving to NYC in September and I'm pretty much going as well. We are thinking about re-opening the gallery in NYC in 2010. But we have a show with Chad Hopper opening May 9th, and we may do one more show after that." Sniff. It will be a sad day when they finally move out... [...]

Kill and Eat Green Bushes (03.2009, Alright Now Records) RIYL = The Weird Weeds, I Heart Lung, chillin' experimental jazz First things first: as you may have noticed, Kill and Eat's Green Bushes has no album art. The disclaimer written on their website reads as follows: "We refuse to release album artwork, because we recognize that formats were made for music, not music for formats. We want our music to be judged on its own merit, not by whether it comes with visual art or fancy/handmade packaging." Makes me feel a little [...]

If you're in Austin for SXSW this week, I'd like to help you weed through that gigantic list of potential musical experiences by offering up a few recommendations. At 8, Pink Nasty, a local act out of Austin, opens the festival on the 18th Floor of the Hilton Garden Inn. Nasty is the nom de plum for Sara Beck who crafts folky pop artist with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and sun-drenched melodies. Check out Lissy Trullie (a SubEx fave) at 10 on stage at Red Patio 7, or try out Ausin-ites the Weird Weeds who are playing at the Hideout. This trio [...]
