Beck - "Harry Partch" ; The history of the musical feud dates back centuries probably, but in the last few decades it has really been the bearer of some terrific music at the hands of the hated on. This week Beck responded to all this Matt Friedberger (of The Fiery Furnaces) vs. Radiohead vs. Himself controversy with a song dedicated to late composer Harry Partch. Now that's not the same Harry Patch that Radiohead dedicated a song to. This little tune featuring snippets from Fiery Furnaces' songs and Partch's own composition structure really takes Friedberger to town. To [...]

[mp3] The Dig: "Two Sisters" We've been following this excellent group for almost a year now, and we're glad to offer a brand new mp3 from The Dig's upcoming LP that they just finished recording with Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Sean Lennon, Apples in Stereo, Sebadoh). The new song "Two Sisters" shows the promise of the band's upcoming recorded output, which had been a question mark, as the band had been steadily touring behind only a three song EP. Yet, their live show and quality of their music on stage is [...]

At the cool little space known as Public Assembly, Babelgum and the Ice Cream Man decided to throw a party last night (Nov. 17th). Not only was there an open bar and free ice cream to celebrate the completion of the Ice Cream Man's journey across America and the music festival scene , but musical acts Kurt Vile and Times New Viking were set to entertain the assembled mass. Not bad for a Tuesday. The space was clamoring, the alcohol was flowing, and clusters of chatty people seemed ready for some [...]

The White Rabbits have been laying tracks all over the US this fall and Glass Ghost has been priming the audiences along the way. So, after spending all that time together, it isn't surprising that when asked what band deserved more praise, love and attention they pointed in Glass Ghost's direction. They just released the fantastically surreal Idol Omen which plays like a trippy spin through vividly crisp fall day in a big city. The influences are many, coming from Eliot and Mike's previous dalliances in the funk, hip-hop, jazz and rock worlds. While the tracks [...]

Pat Graham Yeah, I know that I probably keep closer track of British bands than some (but certainly not as much as others), but I still get confused as to who's who sometimes. Particularly when it comes to outfits comprised of skinny, shaggy-looking lads wielding guitars and perhaps scowls, and whose names are some combination of the definite article and a random noun, sometimes pluralized. The Rifles ? They're the ones who're trying to channel The Jam (and doing a pretty good job of it). The Rakes ? They're [...]

Toronto - If there's ever been a neighborhood that has risen to prominence in the past few years, it's definitely Brooklyn. I guess in actuality, they are a city. Anyways, it's quite impossible to deny that Brooklyn has produced some of the best music in the past few years and I guess finally some media has noticed. Check out NY Mags top 40 songs that define Brooklyn. 40 Light Asylum - "Angel Tongue" 39 Oakley Hall - "All the Way Down" 38 Here We Go Magic - "Fangela" 37 Apache Beat - "Tropics" [...]

My uncle Jamie is a vocational therapist out in Salem, Oregon. A while back, he related to me the concept of risk and how it relates to developmental wellness. If someone is regularly taking emotional, mental, physical and spiritual risks, generally speaking, they are healthier people on a number of levels. This doesn't mean necessarily that individuals should go jump off a cliff or rob a bank. It does mean that people should try to stretch themselves out in all four of these areas as frequently as they can. How far one stretches depends on the person. Saying [...]
