The Vault: The classics of Electronic Music. The influential and the groundbreaking. The pioneering and the music we grew up on… Happy Halloween readers! Just a quick one today, but we couldn't really let Halloween slip by without posting this gem could we? You may know who Ministry are; black dreads, long beards, Metal guitars, shouty vocals, skulls on mic stands etc…, basically a walking Metal cliché. Things weren't always the case! 1981 to 1984 Ministry [...]
These days, even Transylvanians are sick of vampires, particularly those of the brooding, sexy variety. So we're gonna throw it back to the days of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a post on all things black cat and pointed hat.Omnia - Wytches' Brew (William Shakespeare)"Double, double, toil and trouble." The three witches who open Macbeth enjoy one of the most famous speeches in history, brewing
LCD Soundsystem react to the leaking of their track not with lawsuits and witch-hunts, but by turning it into a promo opportunity : well, bye bye bayou totally leaked everywhere, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, since anything that exists is essentially all over the internet in 5 minutes—but it wasn't actually supposed to come out until november 7th (that indie store vinyl day), so we've asked and parlophone have given us 20,000 free downloads to give away to the first, well, 20,000 people. one per customer. or downloader. or avatar or whatever. I have been working on a party mix for Halloween, for no reason other than I just like to do that kind of thing. It currently consists of 132 songs, and I am trying to wittle it down but it seems like every time I take one out, I put another one in. The selection includes not just obvious must-haves like Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party;" but also things that just sound kind of weird or spooky, like Caribou's "Irene" and Lindsey Buckingham's "Slow Dancing." Remixes are well-represented with examples like [...]
Fu Manchu Signs Of Infinite Power Century Media 20 October 2009 by Amit Sharma If Fu Manchu were an animal, they would be a Woolly Mammoth – a giant, fuck-off hairy bastard from the Prehistoric Siberian Tundra. Their latest offering, Signs Of Infinite Power, will makes you feel a bit like being stoned whilst floating around the solar system, perhaps somewhere near the alluring rings of Saturn. [...]

Let's use last years introduction, shall we? Once again, as it always is, October is a special month. The leaves change color, Halloween is on everyone's mind, and the weather is dark and gloomy in many locales. What better way to celebrate the creepiest month of the year with an ongoing feature on some of our favorite spooky, eerie, scary and/or Halloween songs. Yep, it's back, folks: Tricks or Treats ! Angus Andrew, front man of Berlin-via-New York-via-Los Angeles-via-Australia experimental rock trio Liars always has that sort of manic grin that [...]

Although I felt like a teenybopper by arriving at the venue an hour before doors were scheduled to open, I suspected that I wouldn't be the only one who didn't mind camping out a little for Sufjan Stevens . I'd never been to a Sufjan show before and, as gruesome as this may sound, he's been on my list of musicians to see before I die. Radiohead was once on this list. I think it'd be accurate to say that I've been waiting several years to see Sufjan Stevens. Perhaps I've encountered [...]

When I was a young man I remember my father, who played a lot of fastpitch softball as I once did, had a teammate named Tommy Armstrong. I used to play bat boy for free sodas so I got to know the team pretty well. Tommy was probably seven or eight years younger than my father and, as such, was in much better touch with the world of rock music I loved so much. My father liked Booker T & The MGs "Green Onions," but that's as far as it got. I'm pretty sure I mentioned in past blogs how [...]

Thanks to Benn from Atomic for the heads-up exclusive scoop on Hampdenfest performances this year! Looks super-solid. The festival starts at 11. The Barrage Band Orchestra is a marching band that will march through the festival from 11 - 11:45. The bands playing on stage will start shortly after that. And they run up til 7PM. Then usually there are post-festival shows at Golden West Cafe, El Rancho Grande and Fraziers. Each stage is going to be hosted by performers from the Bar Bacon Comedy Night - so comedians. There is also a film festival [...]
The 405 met Alessi's Ark in Holland Park for a two song acoustic session followed by a short interview. A few moments before we met up with Alessi the heavens opened but this wasn't going to stop us! We found a beautiful section near the back of the park and once Alessi got her guitar out the sun put it's hat on and welcomed us. We really hope you enjoy it. Location: Holland Park Songs: Witch & Hummingbird Date: 27/07/09 [...]

Photo credit: Dorret Hunting for safety from the sun's rays made me feel something like an animal Sunday. I was leaning against the old rusted fence in the MICA parking lot, watching Santa Dads do their own thing-and it is totally theirs to keep, when I became aware of all the Wham City members working their butts off in the draining heat. I remember running into (who I believe was) Stefani Levin of Wham City at the Load of Fun on Saturday night. She was clearly fatigued, and (not knowing who she [...]

I noticed this year so far is a banner year for Power Pop, with more "Top Ten" quality albums coming earlier this year than ever before. The new, and greatest release from Roger Klug--- ten years in the making, is everything power pop fans have been waiting for. Fans of Roger Manning, Steve Eggers, Bleu, Mike Viola, will find everything to love about this album. Full of variety and complex melodies, it will take many listens to really appreciate everything here. Opening with the ringing guitars of "Tinnitus" it establishes Klug's early volley of guitar heavy brilliance. It's followed by [...]
In the 1960s a string of romantic comedy musicals came out known as the Beach Party films. They're aimed at teens (yeah, it's teen week at 100b) and starred Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. Frankie and Dee Dee's (Annette) adventures were so popular they made seven of these movies! The plot never really changed and, come to think of it, neither did a lot of the characters, but why mess with a winning formula? Recently, I watched the sixth movie in the series called How To Stuff A Wild Bikini . It's so bizarre I cannot believe somebody dished [...]
Did I mention last entry that I hate going to El Rey because it's way too far West and it's an annoying place? Well, the Glasshouse is about 500% worse. Not only is it in Pomona and getting there forces me to take the 57 AND the 10, but it's in a gross area with an even grosser wanna-be hipster population. But, it's got free parking and like I have said on pretty much any occasion, anything for the Black Lips. Last time I saw the Black Lips at the Glasshouse, they had to section a portion of [...]
