San Francisco's Wooden Shjips offer songs that are equal parts swirling psychedelic repetition and fuzzed out garage rock. It's sorta like mixing together the "broke-ass" garage-rock of Akron, Ohio's the Black Keys, the trancey sounds of Neu, and an extended, drugged-up live version of the Doors' "Light My Fire." The result is a unique sound summed up as a hypnotizing and hazy rawness mastered by driving, repetitive bass lines; primitive, rhythmic drums; ghostly, distant vocals; and bristling, explosive guitar solos. Their strongest release to date is their aptly titled sophomore release Dos . [...]
Anyone who remembers the 'good old' days of festivals when you sat back and relaxed whilst taking in some super sweet beats would revel in the goodness of The Golden Plains Festival. For those that don't, either do I. Woodstock was a long time ago and too far away anyway. The Golden Plains Festival is a modern day version that's only been around for three years. So in festival life span it's only a toddler. A toddler that has been named Australia's Favourite Festival two years running by the 'Festival Awards'. Not so bad for an over [...]
Weekend - "All-American" (via Transparent ) SF's Weekend join the ranks of locals on the Mexican Summer label (see: Wooden Shjips, Young Prisms) with their upcoming two song 103 debut. "All-American" is the A-side, and its noisy feedback swirls don't bury a great melody. The band's got a couple of upcoming shows: November 9th at the Elbo Room , and December 1st at the Hemlock Tavern .
I f Wooden Shjips had until this weekend completely sailed under my radar, it could be explained by the fact that in their several years of existence, the San Francisco quartet had not played a proper NYC concert. On tour to support their latest release Dos, the band played a 92Y show on Friday, and headlined the Sacred Bones Records-curated and ToddP-produced show at 171 Lombardy on Halloween Saturday. At first blush, Wooden Shjips reminded me very much of the psychedelic acid rock of Black Mountain, but quickly veered towards [...]

It had for centuries been a wholly closed society. Extravagantly depraved and despairing, rejecting morality, politics, patriotism and even social intercourse with the outside world. Born in a time when all property was owned in theory, by the Tsar, felonies were not only crimes, they were attacks on the state. Interview by Samuel Duke Photography by John Francis Peters On a rooftop high up above Hell's Kitchen at dusk, the Horrors are sprawled across rotten deck furniture, a lonesome scene for what some presume to be The World's Bleakest Band. And though they look the part— dressed in mostly black apart from the rare sliver of white oxford shirt here or there—they are hardly morose. When they talk at length about records and sound and people they've been blessed to work with, they [...]
Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2009 WIZARDRY @ UNION POOL 484 Union Ave Brooklyn, NY 11211 FREE, 9PM There are a whole bunch of parties tonight where the location is secret (thanks, VICE), but there are some shows that are just plain weird. For instance, Deer Tick will be performing as The Sex Pistols at Brooklyn Bowl. But there's one band for whom dressing up is an everyday occurrence. Halloween is simply another day for the band Wizardry , and that may just be the reason I recommend seeing them on a night like tonight. [...]
Recommended Show: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2009 LIGHTNING BOLT @ ABOVE THE AUTO PARTS STORE 600 Bushwick Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11206 $12, 8PM In terms of noisier bands, this might not only be the place to be tonight, but could potentially be the most anticipated show of the year. If noise isn't your thing, check out other events after the jump. Sigmund Droid @ Lit Palomar [...]
oh we can't stand all of your modern music oh we feel afflicted. so said yr man from black mountain. which pretty much sums up this four track vinyl treat which sounds like it was recorded forty years ago. everything about it screams vintage and analogue. and after the billy bao / mattin / drunkdriver iconoclastic noise-a-thon post this provides a rather pleasant ear sorbet. following on from the love on the sea record this is another four tracks of cleansing wash from wooden shjips strummer ripley johnson (and some other guy [...]
Tomorrow night, Kurt Vile (Philadelphia), Wooden Shjips , and Young Prisms play the Hemlock Tavern (9pm, $10). Kurt Vile creates a previously undiscovered thin line between Springsteenesque rock and bedroom psych-pop. The member of War on Drugs turned solo with Constant Hitmaker and continues to garner attention with his Matador debut, Childish Prodigy, out earlier this month. Kurt Vile - "Hunchback" [...]
Wooden Shjips axeman Ripley Johnson follows up his debut 12" flying under the Moon Duo moniker perfectly with this EP on Sacred Bones. Killing Time finds common ground between his work with the Shjips and the long, winding, static pocked, Krautrocked jams that he laid down earlier this year. Replacing a bit of the hiss and fizzle with a steady booted beat and even a bit of recognizable vocals slipping through the mix. As with any great EP, Ripley leaves you aching for more as the blurred visions of the A-side peak with "Speed" and [...]

Live from the Low End Theory: Beat Invitational 11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Ssru7hYv4X8 I can't believed I missed this. Then again, while this went down, I was watching a face- melting performance from Wooden Shjips in front of 100 people at the crackerbox Hemlock Tavern. A worthwhile consolation if there ever was. For those who don't know, the Low End Theory Beat Invitationals find the club inviting the best producers around and asking them to play their latest greatest beat that they've never played prior. Accordingly, the clips capture new previously unheard Flying Lotus and Samiyam. The video didn't come out, but [...]
