San Francisco's Wooden Shjips offer songs that are equal parts swirling psychedelic repetition and fuzzed out garage rock. It's sorta like mixing together the "broke-ass" garage-rock of Akron, Ohio's the Black Keys, the trancey sounds of Neu, and an extended, drugged-up live version of the Doors' "Light My Fire." The result is a unique sound summed up as a hypnotizing and hazy rawness mastered by driving, repetitive bass lines; primitive, rhythmic drums; ghostly, distant vocals; and bristling, explosive guitar solos. Weekend - "All-American" (via Transparent ) SF's Weekend join the ranks of locals on the Mexican Summer label (see: Wooden Shjips, Young Prisms) with their upcoming two song 103 debut. "All-American" is the A-side, and its noisy feedback swirls don't bury a great melody. The band's got a couple of upcoming shows: November 9th at the Elbo Room , and December 1st at the Hemlock Tavern .

Wooden Shjips axeman Ripley Johnson follows up his debut 12" flying under the Moon Duo moniker perfectly with this EP on Sacred Bones. Killing Time finds common ground between his work with the Shjips and the long, winding, static pocked, Krautrocked jams that he laid down earlier this year.
