Beck - "Harry Partch" ; The history of the musical feud dates back centuries probably, but in the last few decades it has really been the bearer of some terrific music at the hands of the hated on. This week Beck responded to all this Matt Friedberger (of The Fiery Furnaces) vs. Radiohead vs. Himself controversy with a song dedicated to late composer Harry Partch. Now that's not the same Harry Patch that Radiohead dedicated a song to. This little tune featuring snippets from Fiery Furnaces' songs and Partch's own composition structure really takes Friedberger to town. To [...]

It's going to be my album of the year, at least based on its placing in my top 5 of all albums released this decade, but I still didn't know for certain every lyric to every song on the album, which was mildly annoying. Sunset Rubdown hadn't included a lyric sheet with the album's release and although I'd waded through the threads on the Wolf Parade forums and on songmeanings.net at various times this year, there were enough discrepancies to throw me off on more than one lyric in more than one [...]

The Libertines' 2002 debut Up the Bracket was voted second in the list of the top 50 albums, with Primal Scream's XTRMNTR coming in third. Bands such as Radiohead and Arctic Monkeys, plus record producers and label bosses were among those who cast their votes. Guitar-led rock acts dominated the list with nine out of the top 10 places. Is This It, with its lo-fi scratchy guitars and hits like Last Nite and Someday, was one of the most acclaimed albums of the year when it was released in 2001. Its infamous cover shows a hand [...]

Like we said last time , in a world gone Twitter sometimes it's best to just streamline the message. Our message is this: we get lots of submissions from various artists, labels, and PR folk, and it's honestly impossible to stay on top of it all. There's a ton of good music out there, and the following five bands are just some of the latest to jump out from our inbox; now, we pass them on to you in the simplest format we know: 5 + 5 = 10. TL;DR ? Not today, friends... [...]

Written mostly by Frank Phosphate with some help by DL . FRIDAY Hidden Cameras / Gentleman Reg / The O's (Hailey's): It's a pretty shitty time to be a gay person in America. Somehow it was decided that civil rights issues are something to be voted on by the public at large. On one side of the argument, we have testimonials from couples unable to receive perks made easily available to their hetero counterparts, civil rights experts explaining the social/historical significance of [...]

Friday, November 13, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: My work schedule absolutely sucks today, but if it didn't I'd be trying to work some magic to see Brendan Small put on a show as Dethklok tonight at the Austin Music Hall. That man is a genius. Seriously. Just watch Home Movies for proof. Helping me wrap up this hectic week is a very good local act - one that I can never seem to catch live - known as Yellow Fever. [...]
In addition to being a fairly popular indie band, Vivian Girls also run Wild World Records. To date, the label has solely been used to release Vivian Girls singles, like "Surf's Up" and "Wild Eye". However, as Brooklyn Vegan reports, the label will soon branch out as it will be releasing three-Non Vivian Girl releases in the weeks ahead. In the weeks ahead, World Wide will oversee the release of Austin based Yellow Fever's debut self-titled full-length (on December 1st to be exact), which is described as a compilation of three EPs to date, [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]

by Bill Pearis Austin's understated, lovely Yellow Fever launched a short West Coast / South West tour last night in San Diego, and are also set -- any day now -- to release their debut album on Wild World Records , the label run by Vivian Girls . The album appears to be a compilation of Yellow Fever's three EPs to date. For those who haven't been following along, it'll be [...]

Friday, November 6th: Point Break LIVE @ The Metreon " Point Break LIVE! ," the absurdist stage adaptation of the 1992 Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze blockbuster, returns by popular demand to San Francisco's Metreon inside the Action Theater, Friday and Saturday nights at 9:00 beginning October 22nd. Every show will feature a new unrehearsed actor (selected from the audience by the audience), playing 'Johnny Utah' with the lines read off cue-cards so as to capture Keanu Reeves raw acting "talent." The show also features an armed [...]
