I think one of my last posts before the great quiet period was on the imminent release of the Okkervil River album 'The Stand Ins'. I thought I would just post a quick follow up saying how cool the album is... they just keep getting better and better in my opinion. I went to see them play live in Manchester and they were excellent! Some of my favourites from the album: Okkervil River - Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed On The Roof Of The Chelsea Hotel, 1979 [...]
Just finished my first batch of homemade spiced berry cordial —I'm eager for autumn already! The process was great fun, you simply load up a pot with plump blackberries and boil them until they lose their shape. After separating the juice with a cheesecloth, you mix in sugar, cinnamon & clove and bring the concoction to a delicious, smelly simmer. Finally, you pour in a few glugs of white brandy and seal the batch up & squirrel it away for aging. It will be ready in about 2 months. My taste buds are poised—I hope it will be a triumph! [...]

Fanisaitti Summer's Kiss julkaisee 23. kesäkuuta The Afghan Whigsin materiaaliin keskittyvän tribuuttilevyn. Levyllä mukana ovat mm. Mark Lanegan, Joseph Arthur ja Zykos. Lyhyitä näytteitä kappaleista
Lanegan does a properly slow, soulful, kind of blue take of one of his Gutter Twin's classic Congregation songs "Tonight." His go at the 1992 come-on's from the forthcoming Summer's Kiss: A Tribute To The Afghan Whigs , which includes a baker's dozen of Whigs takes via Joseph Arthur, My Jerusalem, Zykos, etc. The idea for it started in the summer of 2006 when the Afghan Whigs fan site Summerkiss put out an open call for covers of Whigs songs and folks responded. You can hear snippets of the selected 13 (of nearly 100 submitted) at the [...]

Local boys Loxsly have been garnishing a lot of positive publicity as of late and are finally ready to drop a proper LP on our ears. To celebrate the release of the album, Tomorrow's Fossils, the band is putting on a release party at Mohawk on Friday night. Fellow local bands Oh No Oh My , Booher and the Turkeyz (Mike Booher from now dead Zykos ), Corto Maltese , and TV Torso are also on the bill. Damn, that's one helluva lineup. Show starts at 8pm [...]
As we are well into the year 2009, it's time we take a good look at what makes the Austin music scene work so well. We'd like to say that it's us, but we know that a whole lot more goes into the scene than the many writers and fans in the city limits. Instead, we turn your eyes to those Icons, those heralded heroes of our town; the ones that make it all run so smoothly. Be it a musician or producer, these are our favorite Austin Icons. We also excluded those who made Austin music famous, and then left [...]

For those who don't know me well, allow me to get some things out in the open: I'm completely obsessed with Neko Case. I want to be her friend, I want to be a member of her band, I want to be HER. Anyway. Neko performed two nights straight in support of her latest incredible album "Middle Cyclone." I saw her tonight (I am writing this immediately after the Thursday show...it is late...) and she killed it. But more on that in a minute. First, let's talk about Okkervil River's Will Sheff, [...]
To me, music is a sonic communion first and foremost, best enjoyed in the encompassing darkness, with headphones if possible. As such, though I'm squarely a member of the first MTV generation, I generally don't bother with YouTube. Some of this is merely about visual distraction. I like concerts - being there is its own form of communion, and seeing an artist's fingering and facial expression can lend a permanent layer of nuance to songs previously heard. But when unavoidable fascination with the technical nuances of sound production, and the way [...]

I don't know what these dudes have to be dejected about. They're in the freaking Himalayas! Okkervil River - " On Tour With Zykos " from The Stand Ins (200 "I go home, take off clothes, smoke a bowl, watch a whole TV movie. I was supposed to be writing the most beautiful poems." Those lines do it for me. Here is a song that I actually listen to when I'm feeling down on my luck-and it rarely fails to lift my spirits. As [...]
20. Mark Lanegan & Isobel Cambell - Sunday At Devil Dirt

Photo Illustration by Nick Duncan . Click for hi-res version. 2008 is taking it's final bow and a what a year it has been. While '07 was dominated by a slew of indie rock heavy hitters releasing awesome albums (Spoon, Of Montreal, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Radiohead) this is a year where new talent seems to be garnering the most attention. For me at least, this has been a very good thing with 1/5th of my favorite albums this year being debuts and just as many being sophomore releases. This isn't to say that old favorites didn't deliver this [...]
