WTF?! Wednesdays: The Residents, “Swastikas On Parade/Hitler Was A Vegetarian” (1976)

The Residents - The Third Reich 'n' Roll (1976) [Full Album]
The Residents have been around since the early '70s, have made over 60 albums, 10 DVDs, 3 CD-ROM projects and numerous music videos and short films. And they make weird-assed music and dress in tuxes with top hats and eye masks. Do we know anything else about them? Yes, they're from Shreveport, Louisiana and relocated to the San Francisco bay [...]

Books: Eric Clapton, Day by Day: The Early Years, 1963-1982, by Marc Roberty (2013)

Derek and the Dominos Live on Johnny Cash
In an exclusive excerpt from the new book Eric Clapton, Day by Day: The Early Years, 1963-1982, Marc Roberty takes us into the earliest days of Derek and the Dominoes - with the arrival of key collaborator Bobby Whitlock. All of this takes place before the arrival of Duane Allman, the doomed slide-guitar genius of Allman Brothers fame. It's even [...]

‘It was a huge revelation’: Scarlet Rivera recalls being plucked from obscurity by Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan - Sara (live)
Scarlet Rivera was an American violinist, plying her trade in relative obscurity, when Bob Dylan tabbed her to take part in the sessions for what would become his 1976 album Desire. Dylan originally spotted her, as the legend goes, walking down the street in the Village, violin case in hand. She arrived unsure what role she would play, never dreaming [...]

The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations Tour (2013)

The Beach Boys - I'm Bugged At My Old Man
For all of its well-deserved accolades, the Beach Boys' 2012 reunion was missing two irretrievable elements. This remastering of a 1976 performance at Anaheim Stadium makes clear just how important the late Carl and Dennis Wilson were. Carl, more than any other member of the band, seemed to embody the lost innocence of brother Brian Wilson's lost-soul symphonies. Without him, [...]

Across the Great Divide: The Band, “Bessie Smith” from The Basement Tapes (1968)

Norah Jones- Bessie Smith
Arriving in official form so many years later, the fabled late-1960s The Basement Tapes project was almost destined to disappoint. Too much mythology had come to surround their Bob Dylan collaborations by 1975. Some wondered about the timing, accusing Robbie Robertson of masterminding the belated release as a money grab - being as the Band hadn't released a stand-alone album [...]

Paul McCartney and Wings – Rockshow (1980: 2013 reissue)

Paul McCartney & Wings - Let 'Em In [Live] [High Quality]
The days of watching dark, grainy footage while listening to a muddy sound mix are finally over. At last, Paul McCartney and Wings’ seminal concert film Rockshow has been completely restored, and is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Like the recent Wings Over America reissue, the film encapsulates a critical point in McCartney’s solo career-his official transition from ex-Beatle [...]

Forgotten series: The Buoys – Golden Classics (1993)

The Buoys - Look back america
Hailing from Pennsylvania, the Buoys visited the national Top 20 charts in the spring of 1971 with “Timothy” that sounded innocent enough, but ruffled feathers in certain corners. Authored by Rupert Holmes, who held membership in the Cuff Links and the Street People, scored hit singles like “Him” and “Escape,” wrote musicals and worked in television, the catchy little pop [...]

Paul McCartney and Wings – Rockshow (1980; 2013 reissue)

ROCK SHOW part 4 of 12 - PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS
Paul McCartney, in his green metal suit, prepares once again to shoot up the city. And the ring at the end of his nose (oh, yes it does) makes him look rather pretty. And just like that, Rockshow - this once lost artifact - is underway. What you're struck by, as McCartney launches into those memorable lines from the title [...]

On Second Thought: Three Dog Night – Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story (1993)

THREE DOG NIGHT- "JOY TO THE WORLD" ( W / LYRICS)
From 1969 to 1975, this Los Angeles, California band spit out an incredible total of 21 Top 40 hit singles. Clearly one of the biggest selling acts of the era, Three Dog Night had everything required to make a winning team. Their chops were well-lubricated, and their songs, flush with sharp production and arrangements, smacked of radio-ready frequencies. Although Three [...]

Velvet Underground: 1970 Max’s Kansas City Concert Poster

From the collection of the late Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison, a rare 1970 concert poster advertising the Velvet's last shows with Lou Reed, at Max's Kansas City in New York . These were the shows at which the band's Live At Max's Kansas City album was recorded. Measuring 28.75" x 11", this is in very nice condition; a high level paper conservator has flattened three horizontal creases and retouched a few small stains (one small line from what looks like a pink [...]

One Track Mind: The Romantics – “Little White Lies” / “I Can’t Tell You Anything” (1977)

The Romantics - Little White Lies
Detroit, Michigan has forever been known for its great music, and the Romantics are just one of many special bands born in the city. Released at a time when both punk rock and power pop music were threatening to kill off old guard acts such as the Rolling Stones, the Who, Yes and Pink Floyd, this single (Spider Records) attracted [...]

Paul McCartney and Wings – Wings Over America (1976; 2013 reissue)

Wings - 'Wings Over The World' Extract
Members of certain generations instantly sense excitement when hearing the opening lyrics to “Venus and Mars”: “Sitting in the stand of the sports arena, waiting for the show to begin.” Shortly after those lines, Paul McCartney and Wings roar into “Rock Show” followed by “Jet.” If a better opening exists for any rock concert, I haven’t heard it. This moment [...]

Back to life

Back to life It's great to get away. Essential, refreshing, re-energizing, but never enough. Time away just reinforces the reality of what you're getting away from. And so you end up staring down the last few moments before returning to your day-to-day. Not that I'm complaining. I'm happy for the day-to-day I get to have today. But still there is a blueness, telegraphed in a face that stuggles to keep its muscles relaxed while concealing anxiety over rejoining its familiar environment. Which makes this as good a time as any to give oneself fully over to the near-ridiculous nitetime soul jazz cues of [...]

Sunday Morning Music - 1970s Recollections

Sunday Morning Music - 1970s Recollections More Sunday morning music - this time all the tracks are from the 1970s. In collecting these cuts I discovered two albums that I somehow missed - Kraftwerk - Ralf & Florian and Cluster - Sowiesoso . I have plenty of Kraftwerk & Cluster in my collection but I didn't have those two albums & they are both wonderful. So thanks to Matt for suggesting those two records. Also thanks Matt for suggesting the Nue! track. That one was "new" to me and it fit [...]

Deep Beatles: Paul McCartney, “Bluebird” (1976, Rockshow edition)

Paul McCartney and Wings - Bluebird (Rockshow)
Sellout crowds. Onstage marriage proposals. Grasshopper infestations. Paul McCartney’s latest world tour has been eventful, finding him presiding over a successful marriage proposal and fending off insects pelting him as he performs “Hey Jude.” After kicking off his “Out There” tour in Brazil with these memorable incidents, McCartney has begun the American leg of concert dates. In addition, the latest [...]

‘Not too rehashed or too thought out’: Classic-era Santana reunion could arrive as soon as 2014

Carlos Santana & Neil Schon - Jungle Strut "Live" (1971)
Neal Schon has his own opinions about how a planned reunion of the early 1970s lineup of Santana should unfold. He wants to return to the loose, improvisational feel of their classic collaboration Santana III. "I really feel that, if we compile the material - or Carlos comes up with the material, whatever he wants to do - we can [...]

‘He was very, very drunk’: Original Quadrophenia era saw the Who devolve into a nasty tangle

The Who - Love, Reign O'er Me (HD) - Montreal, 2012 - Quadrophenia and More Tour
As the Who gears up for another series of shows featuring Quadrophenia, beginning on June 8, 2013 at Dublin, it's worth remembering that things haven't always gone so well for Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. In fact, during rehearsals for the original tour of this 1973 opus, with a film crew there to document things, the two actually - and [...]

‘We needed to see if we could make it’: Paul McCartney remembers Wings triumphal 1976 tour in America

Paul McCartney talks about Rock Show
Paul McCartney is taking stock of the 1975-76 world tour that produced Wings Over America and the concert film Rockshow, just as each are seeing deluxe reissue. The album and film souvenirs recount a triumphal tour for Wings, celebrated in its moment as the first time McCartney had played live in the U.S. in 10 years - and that was [...]
