I'd say the holiday season could use a little groovy, pastoral psych-folk. Surely there's a kitchen in a rural place where someone is preparing festive food and blasting these tracks. I'm not sure if these ladies are from an actual canyon, but that's where they're filed in my brain's library. You can practically see the spliff smoke emanating from the engineer's lips. Heaven & Earth - Jenny Heaven & Earth - Feel The Spirit
For all his command of atmosphere, Eno really doesn't get enough credit for exploring dark mental spaces as well. I've always dug the derangement of this trudging track, but seeing a truly maniacal version at a Here Come The Warm Jets tribute show this past summer sealed it as a Songblague necessity. Brian Eno - Driving Me Backwards
It takes a special bass player to get a solo perch up on the 'blague. Or in this case, a visionary who happened to work the low side. I suppose this could be considered a curiosity for those who know Haruomi "Harry" Hosono mainly from his pioneering electronic work. But this is quite the classy groover, which goes to show that 1973 was 1973 just about anywhere. Haruomi Hosono - Rose & Beast
Rounding out a very non-comprehensive week of Krautrock, we're taking it back to the mighty Can. This jam is another favorite of mine, and uncharacteristically short. Clock-precise and sunset-beach-party-decadent at once. Can - Moonshake And here's one that's pretty much a "Moonshake" re-do, from one their less-than-perfect later albums. Clearly, their future days were no [...]
French indie folk trio 1973 consists of three school friends: Nicolas Frank (vocals and guitars), Thibault Barbillon (bass, keyboards, guitars) and Jérôme Plasseraud (guitars and keyboards). With their first album Bye Bye Cellphone , they have created a loving homage to the sound of classic Brit pop and Californian folk-pop, with strong echoes of The Beatles and [...]
It's Easter weekend and people all over the globe will, to paraphrase the late, great visionary Bill Hicks , commemorate the death and resurrection of their professed savior by telling children a giant bunny rabbit left chocolate eggs in the night. Forget the hunt for pastel-colored eggs. the ceremonial carving of the spiral-cut, honeybaked ham, and religious observances. Several years ago, Paloma and I opted for a more unique way to do Easter – snagging a carryout pizza and watching Night Of The Lepus . For those of you unfamiliar with this cinematic opus, [...]
By the early 70's Russian-born brothers Bystrik and Andy Brazda had relocated to Ontario, Canada in search of greener pastures. Shortly after settling down in their new home they began writing music together. Canadian owned Dominion Records released their first and only lp, The Brazda Brothers , in 1974. Rumour has it that the brothers laid the entire album to tape in a marathon six hour session at RCA Studios in Toronto. Marathon session or not, The Brazda Brothers is one of the finest psych-folk lps ever pressed to wax. The first track, "Walking Into [...]

Dixie Chicken (1973) is when Little Feat came up with their signature sound. Many fans cite this as the group's best LP. I've always thought their debut was one of the best albums from the time ( Sailin' Shoes is also superb), so I'm not really sure which side of the fence I stand on. Dixie Chicken is a more produced (rich, full sound), laid back affair when compared to the raw eccentricity of those first two albums. Most of the tracks are Lowell George originals but to give you an idea of the influences at work here, the group [...]
In 1972 Lindsey Buckingham and his girlfriend Stevie Nicks arrived in Los Angeles with a stack of demos, determined to make a dent in the music industry. By 1973 the pair had scored a deal with Polydor Records and headed into Sound City recording studios in Van Nuys to record their debut with producer and engineer Keith Olson behind the board. The resulting 10 track lp, Buckingham Nicks, is a finely crafted pop record that features contributions from some of L.A's finest studio musicians of the time, including Waddy Wachtel, Ronnie Tutt, Jerry Scheff, and the infamous Jim [...]

Ah, the 70s, every possible strange stuff was allowed in music....in this case to finance drug habits? Well, this Italian weirdness leaves you a lot of doubts on the subject. This single - issued in pre-disco era but blatantly disco influenced - is a description, in musical form, of all the parts of a...... chicken!
