I love it when I hear an unfamiliar group doing stuff that sounds like home. The more branches, the better the musical family tree. This one's got it going on. Primitive mechanical rhythm track? Overlapping circular melodies? Steady layering? Yes, yes, yes! I'm not sure those are real flutes, but they're giving me real smiles. Part of me wants a version that strips away everything but the breathing. Soft Verdict - Mildly Skeeming

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ----------- So... I hope it's long-awaited update! Cheesy disco cover version of G. Kingsley's immortal creation by famous canadian musician Dominic Sciullo (listen to [...]

Another find from Light in the Night . This one made me do a double-take. A lot less menacing, a lot more...sexy? Well, maybe. When it sounds like you're reading off of phonetic cue cards, the dread just melts away. I guess once Ms. Anderson had her accidental chart hit, she thought "dance mix next!" I'm still trying to figure out exactly what dance this calls for. Any suggestions? A.P.O. - O Superman

(reposted with alterations from last June) It’s hot today. It was hot yesterday. And the forecast calls for this heat wave to persist for the next week. Though Paloma and I have central air in our tree house suite, a glimpse at the unit’s guts when it was being repaired last summer leads me to believe that it has been built from surplus bi-plane parts manufactured in the ‘30s. The fact that I am marinating on the couch leads me to question its structural integrity and cooling prowess. [...]

Christiane F - Wunderbar (1982)

Cold, windy Sunday put me in a bit of a spin. Allergies, cracked skin, a weird sense of unease. The kind of day where doing anything seems like the wrong thing and doing nothing feels the same way. Sometimes you don't feel like yourself, and sometimes you think it's possible for the brain to glitch enough that you become a different person for a little while until it resets itself. Here's a song from a band I don't remember hearing about and whose music is tied to no memory and yet feels totally familiar to me. Maybe I'm just [...]

Stereo - T.V. News (1982)

Islanders - Tirolien Laender

Flynn's riff about the musical implications of getting older has me a little bit anxious. Well, the nice thing about being a replicant is that you probably won't ever have that problem. And there's my awkward segue to today's track. Any snarky comments about the Vangelis cheese factor and the Songblague police will retire your punk ass. As a sidenote, why has no one introduced the Blade Runner line of shaving razors? Vangelis - Blade Runner (End Titles)
Familjen just dropped his new single "När Planeterna Stannat" and we blogged about it last week (including the fine looking video). Now, Swedish producer John Dahlbäck remixes the track (buy it at Beatport ) into a summerish euphoric mass bouncer - sort of a house stomper in a pop outfit.

It’s springtime and around here that means one thing: the music of Jerry Garcia. Normally our thoughts turn to JGB in one of its various incarnations but this year’s JG Stormy Mondays is heading down the acoustic path with a classic: May 5th, 1982 at the Oregon State Prison in Salem, OR. This is a stunning tight performance straight through, with an excellent pairing of Train to Cry (a real rarity for Garcia and Kahn) and Run for the Roses, and a phenomenal Reuben and Cherise encore. It doesn’t get any better. [...]

The sun is out, the layers are coming off, the molecules are speeding up. Whenever Spring begins in earnest, I notice a spike in the weirdness quotient around town. Maybe it's all the energy finding undirected expression after breaking loose from the cold. Here's a jacked-up nugget of Brazilian proggy funk to usher in the restless time of year. Mário Garcia - A Graça
Morning, Freaks!! What a glorious day to be alive!!! Those of you who know me, know that I start off my mornings with music. It’s the first thing I do. I have about 10 albums in my rotation. Today, happens to be one of my favorite days…Bob Marley day. Talk about music that puts a smile on your face. I found myself dancing around the house this morning, drinking coffee to a very solid ’79 Wailers show. Those guys were plum happy living in a Jamaican ghetto, without a pot to piss in, as [...]

My copy of the Mops second 73 looks like it was found in a dumpster, but as it plays perfect I never bothered to update it to a better looking copy until a few months ago when I saw a copy on... Punk | Powerpop | Mod | Hard Core

Ministry - Same Old Madness (1982) Merci à Hardrock Striker
Growing up in a household with no older siblings and with parents who had merely a passing interest in music, I didn't have familial influences when I began to listen to music. In junior high, music was a big topic of conversation as teammates fought for control of the stereo in the locker room with Billy Squier, Van Halen, and Led Zeppelin being in heavy rotation. There was music on the bus rides to games and meets with rock stations tuned in during football season and - with girls on the team - Top 40 during track season. [...]

Vera - Don't You [...]
