John Humphrys snapping at Chris Moyles

Here, perhaps, is a sign that it might be time for Radio One to review their breakfast show: the battle between Chris Evans and Chris Moyles for morning crown is now well over; instead, Chris Moyles is struggling to avoid being beaten by Today . MediaGuardian does the RAJARs: BBC Radio 4's Today programme had an average weekly audience of 7.15 million in the last three months of 2011, a whisker away from its biggest ever listenership and just 90,000 behind Moyles on Radio 1, who had an audience of 7.24 million. In other good news, 6Music [...]

Kraftwerk on 6Music

KRAFTWERK - THE MODEL
Depending on which DJ you believe this week/month/weekend is " Kraftwerk week/month/weekend" on that there BBC 6Music . They keep playing a trailer, which is of course in schoolboy German (it is on as I type!), that seems to suggest it begins on Thursday. The programme schedule on the website lists a 30-minute documentary titled "Kraftwerk: The Men Who Invented Pop" (Celebrating the influential German band Kraftwerk, Alex Kapranos tells their story.) to be aired at midnight tonight/tomorrow. Though the information page hasn't been updated and gives details of a Lenny Kravtiz narrated [...]

#142 – Maz Totterdell

#142 – Maz Totterdell Maz Totterdell is incredible. I don't normally start with such hyperbole, but it's just the only way I can introduce this 15 year old Devonian. Yes, 15. When you listen to the song (or if you already have) you'll realise why I'm highlighting her age, because she has got a voice and a sound that belies her years. The lyrics to her first single, 'Counting My Fingers', are sweet but not sickly, her voice is a revelation and the song is one of the best things I've heard in a long time. It's got twee handclaps you'll be joining in [...]

Bowie at 65: Bowie saves 6Music

Changes (for 6 Music)
6Music is currently celebrating Bowie's birthday, as well they should, after he helped fight off closure: Alright, it's actually Adam Buxton. But still... Bowie would have done it himself, if he could have. [Part of Bowie at 65 ] -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

A Little More of This, Please, and a Little Less of That

A Little More of This, Please, and a Little Less of That I am not doing predictions, mostly because I can't. I have no idea what is going to be big this year and what isn't, and even if I think a band is going to release something amazing that probably doesn't matter, because bands I love rarely ever get all that famous anyway. But in any case, and in no particular order, here are some things I liked about last year, and some things I didn't. Some stuff I'd like to see more of and some things I am looking forward to, and some things I am not. "Something [...]

Listen again to our tip for 2012 on 6Music – Frank Ocean

Listen again to our tip for 2012 on 6Music – Frank Ocean Frank Ocean is very good Recently, we've been spending the dead time between Christmas and New Year working our way through a tin of quality street and catching up on Coronation Street. While we were doing that, however, our tip for 2012 was included in Tom Robinson 's round-up of 6Music's listeners' predictions of who will be big next year in the world of pop music in his Now Playing show. We chose Frank Ocean - he's undoubtedly already made an impression with his Nostalgia/Ultra mixtape, released for free [...]

Interview: Marc Riley (Part 2)

Missed the first part of my interview with Marc Riley? No worries, you can read it at this link. Something special (or several somethings special) that sets Marc Riley 's evening programme on 6music apart from anyone else on the radio are his unusual features. For example, Marc will proffer a couple nonsensical clues on the identity of the person on the t-shirt he is wearing that night, and listeners are invited to email or text into the show to offer their guess on the mystery person's (or band's) [...]

Interview: Marc Riley (Part 1)

Interview: Marc Riley (Part 1) Packing up and sorting through the music collection you've scuttled away for years are daunting chores for anyone preparing to change locales. BBC 6music presenter Marc Riley knows this all too well: when he and his staff were getting ready for the big move from the BBC Manchester studios on Oxford Road to their shiny new digs at MediaCityUK at Salford Quays, they were faced with a dilemma. "We had thousands of CDs because we had lots of cupboards. Then we were told when we moved here, we didn't have lots of [...]

What If We Lose Regional Introducin g?

What If We Lose Regional Introducin g? When 6Music was threatened with the axe a couple of years ago I objected on about three grounds, if I remember correctly. - First was self-interest, because almost no-one else ever plays the stuff I release on the radio. - Second was about the damage to the arts caused by effectively cutting adrift musicians and bands at lower levels by removing one of the only feasible remaining ladders to the higher levels, meaning the only way to financial viability now would be to leap from a few local blogs to Radio1 all in one go. [...]

People love the BBC

Not all our media reeks like a fish that has been left out in the sun, or a bucket of KFC. The BBC has been doing some work into the value people feel it brings to their lives and has made some of the findings public. Here, for example, are the "appreciation" indices for BBC Radio (where 100= couldn't be happier): All BBC Radio 80 BBC Radio 1 78 BBC Radio 2 81 BBC Radio 3 83 BBC Radio 4 80 Radio 5 Live 77 Radio 5 [...]

Glastonbury Coverage

Glastonbury Coverage I may not be at Glastonbury this year, and will in fact be playing that wonderfully English game of cricket over the weekend instead, but that doesn't mean you should miss out on the BBC's live coverage of pretty much everything that is going on in the fields of mud. If you're near a digital radio or anything with an internet connection then here are some highlights of what 6Music has on offer to get yours ears around: Saturday 1pm - 2pm - Steve Lamacq has Warpaint and Two [...]

My Grey Horse – Waste Of Air

My Grey Horse – Waste Of Air Fans of Mumford & Sons and Noah & The Whale are likely to find themselves won over by this adorable offering from Stratford based band My Grey Horse . Waste Of Air has a wonderfully catchy chorus, which I was humming for hours after first listening, and some incredible harmonies all fronted by gorgeous & unique vocals. Even the video is incredibly sweet, although I have to admit how they managed to get the fortune telling fish to do what it was meant to I will never know! Based on this evidence it's unsurprising that they are [...]

John Myers suggests Newsbeat everywhere, all the time

To be honest, the John Myers review of music radio seems to have struggled to come up with any way of improving value for money across the main BBC pop stations. Instead, it seems to have become fixated on the news service : It also criticised Radio 2 for employing newsreaders who read a brief hourly news update but then did "little else until the next hour's bulletin". The review questioned whether Radio 1's Newsbeat programme, which broadcasts a 15-minute bulletin twice a day – as well as hourly news updates – needed to employ [...]

Now Playing @6Music

On Friday I appeared on Tom Robinson's new 6Music show, Now Playing @6Music , which was exciting. I spoke a little about CMU and what we do and then played three songs that we love. Choosing three tracks to play was pretty agonising, but I'm pretty pleased with what I eventually chose. I played clips of Cramm by Three Trapped Tigers , whose brilliant debut album is out next week, and Bridges by Fallulah , in honour of my trip to SPOT Festival in her home country Denmark, where I'm writing [...]
