A couple months ago Joel Azevedo (do you recognize this name?) aka Silenx uploaded his "Long Lost Love" and now it's available for free. As we all know, his music is influenced by the 802s. I love dropping in a nugget of golden-era hip-hop into my mixes. Virtually all of the hip-hop beats from that time were samples of funk, soul, and r&b jamz from the late 70s to mid 80s, which I think can make for great transitions. Case in point two fun* hip-hop songs both sampling Patrice Rushen: Dj Honda (1998) - not golden-era, but close. Patrice Rushen (1984) Tragedy (1993) - *serious lyrics over a party beat. Patrice (1982) - lovely production.

New York collective Phenomenal Handclap Band return with their sophomore album, and it's a curious beast. You know when they travel to the future in the Bill and Ted films, and it's basically the 1980s except it's the future? That's pretty much what this album is. Except with the 1970s. And no Keanu Reeves, which is a shame. It's all disco grooves, funk guitar, layer cake production and vocal arrangements that sound like a computer has been fed a load of ABBA, Blondie and Scissor Sisters and programmed to compose something.
