Q.: With so many different formats of recorded music to choose from (mp3, vinyl, CD, AAC, FLAC, .WAV, .AIFF), how do I know which one sounds closest to what the artist originally intended? A: This question has been with us ever since recorded music became available in multiple formats. The answer requires a quick trip down memory lane, and a look at the dark art of mastering. First, the history: The first time multiple formats with differing sounds were seriously available to consumers was in the [...]

Eek! It's time for SXSW spillover, the yearly event in which the hoards of bands heading to Austin collect a little gas money by playing our fair area. But I'm not one to complain: Good music is... Yesterday, the handsome devil who runs YEMblog posted the definitive recording of the first Phish From The Archives broadcast that was aired on Radio Bonnaroo last summer. Today, as promised, comes FLACs, MP3s and AAC files of the second Phish From The Archives broadcast that aired on June 14, 2009, in the same quality as the file set that was posted yesterday. The second Bonnaroo From The Archives broadcast featured a wealth of gems that span from 1985 to 1999 including an exploratory version of 2001 [...]

Back with another Friday Five, just some random goodness from the interwebs, enjoy, and leave your best in the comments, peace! The Who Playing Super Bowl Halftime Show This week it was announced that the greatness of The Who (or what is remaining of the Who) will be playing Super Bowl halftime this year . We will see if Roger Daltrey can match the Boss' crotch slide, big shoes (or whatever) to fill there. Also, side note, as seems to be a trend lately, rumblings [...]

Last week I ventured into the AAC for the first time for a concert in order to see the Kings of Leon/White Lies show. There were fratty bros a-plenty in attendance (see above picture), but despite the 'flavor of the week' vibe I got from the crowd both bands put on great sets and I was thoroughly impressed and enjoyed myself with this one. When I first heard about KOL headlining AAC my reaction was a bit 'huh?' I know they're big, trendy, etc and they have that "Use Somebody" song [...]
Alright homies, we have another DBF Ticket Giveaway for a show coming up next Wednesday, October 7th at the AAC (American Airlines Center) here in Dallas for White Lies (pictured above) opening up for Kings of Leon. This promises to be a barnburner and a ballbuster of a show, and while I have not seen either live before, White Lies was certainly getting some of the most hefty buzz around SXSW this past year and I am certainly a fan of their debut album To Lose My Life . . . , which is damn solid. [...]

"This is probably the last Eagles album that we'll ever make," Don Henley told CNN of the band's 2007 steaming shit platter Long Road Out of Eden . Yeah, but he made similar promises about the chances of an Eagles reunion right up until their 1994 Hell Freezes Over tour, so I'm not breathing a sigh of relief just yet. The Eagles ' latest tour kicks off next Monday in Philly. They'll perform at the American Airlines Center Saturday, September 13, and tickets go on [...]
