There's a very special kind of music that I like to listen to on a rainy day or when I can't sleep. It's the type of music that's soft, slow, and relaxing, and instead of playing around with a ton of different instruments, it typically features just a guitar or piano and a voice. With the gloomy winter weather that we have been having in Toronto lately, I've found myself listening to artists like Iron and Wine and Patty Griffin on repeat. Both acoustic in a number of [...]

Here's something to help get you in the mood for next Tuesday. It comes from Kayln Rock's rather lovely album Passenger which is full of low-key, restrained, but ultimately affecting and powerful songs - none more so than the heartbreaking honesty of Valentine . On the self-titled David Loris & Co. , Rome's David Loris shares simple yet evocative songs that recall the rhythmic foundation of traditional folk, the lush, acoustic orchestration of The Beatles, and the gentle touch of Elliott Smith. Between acoustic guitars and distinctive mandolin, Loris (and co.) produce light, rhythmic, and sugar sweet songs that fall somewhere between indie pop and folk. The sprightly, accentuated instrumentation makes the music all the more appealing and effective. It's soothing, energetic, playful, and charming acoustic folk-based pop that makes even the darkest of days open for a bit of sunshine. [...]

In late 2008, with no money to her name, Jesse Thomas headed for Los Angeles. Alone. After a few open mic nights in the Valley and some raw demo recordings, she caught the attention of producer Jim Roach at Red Parade Music Group . Jim found something special in Jesse that countless others would soon come to recognize: a hilarious yet poignant personality shining through that smoky, battle scarred voice. She released an EP Hazel back in 2010, which met with much acclaim, and now makes a welcome return with her [...]
Chicago musicians Bob Nanna and Lauren LoPiccolo have united to create simple, but dreamy, acoustic pop ditties under the moniker Jack and Ace . "I'm Sorry That You are the Black Death" pairs delicately plucked guitar melodies with earnest lyrics about, what else, love. Jack and Ace prove that melancholy doesn't need to be so complicated to be effective. Nanna is better known for his work with influential post-hardcore (or emo, if you like) outfit Braid and Hey Mercedes. LoPiccolo previously teamed up with Nanna in the City on Film. [...]

Will you be attending the BIG QUEER ROCK SHOW on March 2nd? This is the part of the post where you turn to me and say, "Yes, I'm all about supporting local Boston musicians, whilst simultaneously benefiting a unique organization that works with LGBT youth. Also, I've really been looking for an opportunity to get rocked so hard that my face melts off!" Good to hear! Alas, you might be a little curious about who will be rocking your face off. [...]

It's no secret that FOX has a habit of canceling its best shows (to this day I still want to have a serious talking to with whoever decided Arrested Development had run its course). And after a recent Lie to Me obsession this summer, I was devastated to find there was no Season 4 to continue my marathon. So consider this playlist Part 1 of a final lament to yet another show that ended before its time. Lie to Me is a drama centered around Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth - [...]

Holy crap have I fallen in love with a band/record out of nowhere. Baobab, essentially Phil Torres (with some help from Whitney Trettien ), based out of Durham, North Carolina, just released their debut s/t album, and it couldn't sound less like a debut. Complex, mature, and impeccably arranged, the album is nothing short of hypnotizing. Spring, Baobab welcomes you into their arms. Newton abbot's Alice Jemima has been making a name for herself lately with her new single "Far From Here". The track is a testament to one big thing that is prevalent in the music industry today; the love of the music itself. Countless blogs are popping up, bands are more willing to give free downloads, and everyone wants to spread the word about good quality music. Hence Alice Jemima's sudden popularity. With "Far From Here", Alice combines a sincere delivery with unique vocal lines, memorable hooks, and intimate guitar parts to offer the masses a look into [...]

With the weekend's Super Bowl now over, what better way to celebrate the season than with a playlist from a show not only about football, but with one of the greatest indie soundtracks to go with it. NBC's Friday Night Lights is a show about a small, western Texas town, where every Friday night during the football season the town shuts down to cheer on the Dylan Panthers football team. With the bright lights of the football stadium, it's easy for the various characters to get lost in themselves as they deal with handling pressure, serious injury, drug [...]

Back in late 2010, when Lana Del Rey was still relatively unknown and blond, she made what was possibly her first European TV appearance on Mandio Diao 's MTV Unplugged show. Backed by the Swedish rock band themselves, Lana gave an acoustic rendition of "Chet Baker" , an obscure 2007 b-side named after the jazz legend. The show was later released on CD/DVD, and footage of her segment has been floating around since, but I only managed to discover it a couple days ago. Her voice was a good fit for the jazz-tinged track, [...]

Jess Morgan's first album, 'All Swell', is as chilled out as a Sunday morning driving along the seafront. Moving on to new things, Jess has released details of a Pledge Music campaign which aims to raise money for her up and coming second album, 'Aye Me'. Following on from 'All Swell', it is set... ![[MP3] Inspired and the Sleep: "What I Want and What I Need"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4044259_lg.jpg)
Well, Valentine's Day is creeping up on us, and whether we're head over heels in love or reeling over a broken relationship, we appreciate the whimsical music that comes with it. Our buddy Max Greenhalgh, aka Inspired and the Sleep , recorded a cutesy twee song for I Love You & Stuff , a Hi54LoFi Records Valentine's Day Compilation release. On "What I Want and What I Need," Greenhalgh teams up with Kaila Abruzzo as they sweetly bounce off each other's voices. And, as Greenhalgh said, "Yes, that's a smooch at the very [...]
