By Thomas Michalski Watch more on Network Awesome In a backwards-looking pop cultural landscape, permeated by nostalgia and meta-quotation, it is worth noting that no one seems to be trying to make it big aping Adam and the Ants. With post-punk, and indeed the wider sphere of 1980s pop, serving as popular reference points, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads and many others have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity and influence, [...]

Fronted by Adam & The Ants members Marco Pirroni and Chris Constantinou, The Wolfmen may not be at the cutting edge of modern music but, judging by the amount of old school t-shirts and tattoos on display at the historic 100 Club, they still hold a place in many hearts. Making a rare appearance to launch their second album Married To The Eiffel Tower (including a duet with Sinead O'Connor), the absence of driving force Pirroni - who has retired from live performance - does little to subdue the atmosphere. Instead The Wolfmen's pedigree [...]

One of the cable stations is running some week-long airing of the movies in the Rocky series. I remember seeing the first movie in the theater in '76 when the film was captivating the country and I've never seen an audience more electrified . It's a stellar movie. Numbers II and III were decent popcorn flicks, but by the time I got dragged to number IV, things had reached a cringe-inducing point. That aside, I had to watch the opening montage to Rocky III when I happened across it if [...]

The Giant Panther is now part of the Mog Music Network. To celebrate I created an 80s New Wave playlist. Hoping to convince John to make one of his own, it's always great to get two different perspectives on a particular type of music. Head over to the playlist page to play the songs. I've included the playlist here and a few tracks. 1. Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode 2. Shadowplay by Joy Division 3. A Forest by The Cure 4. Cut Dead by The Jesus & Mary Chain [...]
Earlier today the controversial fashion designer and band manipulator, Malcolm McLaren died at the age of 64 from cancer. The man who managed the New York Dolls during 1973, took the ideas and influences from the American quintet and used them to help shape one of the most iconic bands of the 20th Century - the Sex Pistols. McLaren also guided the music careers of Adam and the Ants - turning

I had dinner with Malcolm McClaren once, a few years back via a friend of some friends. Fascinating to say the least. He imparted all kinds of crazy gossip about Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette , where he had been invited to basically slum around the set. But what really struck me was simultaneously how old he looked versus how young and on fire his brain still was. Number one, by his dress sense, he saw the whole neo-preppy, docksiders & cardigans, Sartorialist-thing coming a mile away. And two, he talked my ear off about the changing face of digital [...]

A long time ago there was a band named Adam And The Ants . I know SOME of you folks out there in blog land remember 'em... especially some of my UK compatriots (they DID have 11 top ten hits, y'know). Anyway kids, they were huge for a couple of years before the inevitable crash and burn. And, THEY DIDN'T SUCK! Songs like "Antmusic", "Stand And Deliver", "Beat My Guest" and "Goody Two Shoes" were pretty cool. The whole pirate motif and poly-rhythmic drumming was pretty whacked out for the early 80's. And chicks dug em and they weren't [...]

Oh, 1980. I was just a naive 11 years old then. You were just shy of 2,000. How time has passed. Adam & the Ants: Antmusic Ultravox: King's Lead Hat DEVO: Freedom of Choice

Been a bit heavy on the leccy lately, lets have a couple of tracks from the archives. You'll be very familiar with John Kongos "He's Gonna Step on You Again", it's well worth your time tracking down the accompanying album 'Kongos' which contains many fuzzy gems: John Kongos- Tokoloshe Man (Download) Adam & The Ants second single didn't make the pop charts, but it's easily the best thing they ever recorded. 30 years old this year: Adam & The Ants- Xerox (Download)

Big drums and jerky vocals - Terje edit.......think if the beastie boys had goofy British cousins. For those who arn't familiar with Adam and the ants, they were a British rock band band during the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were one of the bands at the time that marked the transition from the 70s punk rock era to the New Wave/post-punkera. Back in high school I used to write down the songs on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 while listening on the radio. It took me a while to realize that those charts were published in Billboard , and that the newsstand across the street from our apartment building in the Bronx carried it. It was expensive (think it was $4), but I literally read it cover to cover. Because there was no way I could buy it weekly, I kept the same copy around for months at a time, studying it—and one of my favorite sections were the [...]

For the third time, director Sophia Coppola and composer Brian Reitzell teamed up - and naturally, it's a charm. Following the astute soundtracks of The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation , the soundtrack to 2006's Marie Antoinette is something to be remembered, as well. The two-disk package was nominated for "Best Soundtrack" at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, and features period pieces. However, the main focus is new wave, post-punk and Gothic music, which is juxtaposed nicely with Coppola's highly stylized interpretation of 18th century France. The film depicts Kirsten Dunst [...]
" Ridicule is nothing to be scared of ". Perhaps this is an obvious statement from a man sporting an Antplaster from cheek to blushered cheek, a man who proudly dances in a bizarre Vogue-like fashion with Diana Dors. But apart from being a great bold lyric, that line is a manifesto for the best pop music, the best art, culture and everything else that means anything. I realise that now. In 1981, it was just a line in a catchy song that made me shake my various limbs in the random manner that children attempting to dance do. [...]

How cool is this? Scientists have discovered a type of fly that will lay eggs on the dreaded fire ants , which then essentially turn the ants into zombies, thereby rendering them harmless: "The maggot that hatches inside the ant eats away at the brain, and the ant starts exhibiting what some might say is zombie-like behavior." You can either use your imagination to ponder this awesomeness or read all about it right here while you listen to these zombie/ant tunes. [...]
