The closest I've come to reaching an understanding with death is this: death is a long echo. It’s deafening at first and as soon as you think the echo has faded, some thing comes along and pings it back into your life. And when death creeps into music it’s like an echo chamber. Maybe it rattles in the rests of Jeff Buckley songs, or lives inside Notorious B.I.G.’s words, or hangs on every Elliott Smith note. Chuck Klosterman tried to write about the mysticism of death in rock 'n' roll in his book Killing Yourself To Live , only [...]

As you might have heard yesterday, Brooklyn, N.Y. officially has one of the best parks in the world: Adam Yauch Park. That's right, the NYC borough renamed one of its parks after the late Beastie Boys rapper, who passed away tragically one year ago today. And during the dedication ceremony, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz gave a moving speech that might leave you feeling choked up if not in tears. I don't blame you if you just listen to the Beasties for the rest of today. Watch the speech below.

Yesterday, New York Parks & Recreation opened the Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights, on the same site that the musician, producer, humanitarian and MC used to play as a child. It's a year on from the artist's untimely death from salivary gland cancer and much respect is still being paid to his life and work, who under the moniker MCA along with Mike 'Mike D' Diamond and Adam 'Ad-Rock' Horovitz, founded the legendary NYC hip-hop act Beastie Boys . Hundreds of artists and bands as diverse as Coldplay, [...]

Hoaxes: We've all fallen for them at one point or another. As technology gets smarter, society moves faster, and the industry burns brighter, substantial facts take up a volley of time that few souls ever embrace. Double checking, for many, is consulting another site or Twitter handle; the thread to sources short, thin, and likely intangible. For the entertainment industry, hoaxes have always existed - after all, everyone wants a good laugh. Rather, they've grown more complicated and harder to distinguish, which means countless troublemakers are cackling these days. Consequence of Sound isn't [...]

The New York Post reports that the borough of Brooklyn is about to rename Palmetto Playground, on State Street in Brooklyn Heights, after Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, who died last year . Yauch was a Brooklyn Heights native, and the idea to rename the playground came from a blog post that became a Facebook campaign; it's a rare case of local government officials looking at an internet thing and saying, in effect, "Yeah, that sounds like a pretty good idea." Surviving Beasties Ad-Rock and Mike D are expected to join city officials at a renaming ceremony [...]

According to the New York Times , the book will be less of a conventional tell-all and more of an "oral history," complete with a "strong visual component." It's not clear exactly what that will entail, but there are some standout moments from the Beastie Boys' career that fans will no doubt be expecting to hear about in Diamond [...]

It has been nearly a year since Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed, so it is only right this fantastic animated tribute popped up to pay respect. The video goes along with an upcoming London art show held by artist James Curran that will apparently hold 35 prints that will be up for sale. I assume those 35 prints will have something to do with the art shown during these lovable animations. Proceeds from the event will go to cancer patients. [ via ] You can watch the video below and check out artist James Curran's [...]
With the year beginning to draw to a close, and with only a bare handful os Sundays left for 2012 Slaylists, this week we're turning out attention to those we've lost in 2012. We're talking about the bands that have either broken up or gone on hiatus, as well as the more serious subject of musicians who sadly died at some point over the last 12 months. The first half of this week's Sunday Spotify Slaylist are bands that fall into those first two categories - bands that either finally [...]
