The Beastie Boys formed all the way back in 1979 and for many, their music was an integral part in forming the earliest of hip-hop memories. I distinctly remember borrowing Hello Nasty from a friend during the summer after third grade. I didn't even try asking my parents to get it. I knew what the answer would be. And even before that, "Paul Revere" was the first track I knew all the words to. Coldplay did this cover for the first time when Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer. They did it again last night at [...]
They always say that the good ones die young. Emotions make us human and I always kind of giggled when I would see people expressing any type of emotion when a musician/celebrity would pass; very much in the same way the world collectively gasped upon the news of the passing of Princess Di. I'm not getting any younger and I'm constantly reminded of that when the news of the music world as you knew it starts to fade before your eyes. The first time I felt a sense of loss was the death of [...]
On Friday night's episode of Late Night , Jimmy Fallon and The Roots honored the Beastie Boys' MCA with a video montage and covers of the trio's classic songs. Fallon offered a short statement before airing the montage, which comprised footage from the Beastie Boys' 2009 appearance on the show. The Roots, frequent collaborators of the Beastie Boys, played covers of "Sure Shot", "Remote Control", "Sabotage" in between segments. You can replay all of Friday's episode below (Fallon's montage is at the 11:40 mark, and The Roots' cover of "Sure Shot" can be seen at the 4:15 mark. [...]
With the sad news of Adam Yauch 's passing, I am moved to recall the summers of my youth sitting in small cars, packed with tall, gawky friends listening to Beastie Boys cassettes playing at volumes far too loud for our ears. We all knew every word, each pause - every last syllable. We were alive and this was our soundtrack. And so I struggled for the last 24 hours on how to best memorialize MCA - the loss still not fully realized. And it came to me that there's nothing I could write that [...]
Coldplay paid tribute to the Beastie Boys' MCA during their concert in Los Angeles on Friday night. The band performed their piano-driven reworking of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)", which they first debuted at the All Points West Music Festival in 2009 (the Beastie Boys canceled their slot at the festival shortly after MCA revealed his cancer diagnosis.) Watch footage of last night's tribute below.
Adam Yauch, 1964-2012 Wow, little did I know I would be setting aside Cover Friday for this: Adam Yauch, aka "MCA" of the Beastie Boys, has died at the far-too-young age of 47, apparently after a battle with cancer that he fought very privately. Within the span of just a few years, The Beastie Boys evolved from their early incarnation circa 1982 as bratty punks (on the Polly Wog Stew EP), to their first crack at hip hop, "Cookie Puss," to the still-bratty (and first significant white) rappers of Licensed [...]
When I heard this morning that Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys had succumbed to cancer, it hit me hard. I didn't expect it, and I was surprised by my reaction. At first. There were the obvious reasons-Yauch was only 47, too young to die, and yet another reminder of our own mortality. Then there was the fact that it was cancer, a horribly ugly disease that the National Cancer Institute projects will claim the lives of more than 575,000 Americans in 2012. The more I thought about it-and, of course began to play Beasties songs [...]
It is with great sadness that Beastie Boys member and co founder Adam Yaunch has passed away after a long battle with stomach cancer. The rapper whos on stage name is MCA had been battling with the illness since his diagnosis in 2009. The official statement on the Beastie Boys website reads"It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam 'MCA' Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and [...]
RIP Adam Yauch aka MCA aka Nathaniel Hornblower aka Nathan Wind aka Sir Stuart Wallace who died today aged 47. Full statement. Obits from The Guardian and The New York Times. Devastasting news. His passing marks the end of the trio of Mike D, Adrock and MCA as a band, a unit, a rap group. We will never see the three of them finish each others rhymes in the flesh ever again. The Beastie Boys pretty much define my teenage years. Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, Paul's Boutique and Check [...]
RIP Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch
As someone who grew up with the Beastie Boys constantly playing on MTV, the group was one of few who left an indelible mark on my listening habits over the years. Growing up in Kentucky where the genre of choice was largely country music, the Beastie Boys essentially served as my transition in to real hip-hop. Ad Rock was the wild, party guy and Mike D always seemed like the more intelligent, laid-back member of the group, but MCA was just cool. He was always so confident in himself, giving off this energy that he was who he was and [...]
In Memoriam: Adam Yauch
You know those really crappy days when a piece of new just hits you hard in the bottom of your stomach, and you can only say "Fuck", and just tune out the rest of the world to deal with it? Today is one of those days. Adam Yauch , better known as MCA from the Beastie Boys , has passed away after losing the battle with cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2009. Fuck. This is one of those celebrity deaths that really hits close [...]
O Coldplay fez uma versão surpreendentemente tocante da clássica Fight for your right (to party) , [...]

RIP MCA of the Beastie Boys
I was greatly saddened to discover that legendary Beastie Boy and all round nice guy Adam Yauch, aka MCA, lost his fight to cancer yesterday. As a youngster I experienced a musical eureka moment when, on the back of that legendary 'Sabotage' video, I spent all my saved pocket money to buy not just on [...]
