With the year beginning to draw to a close, and with only a bare handful os Sundays left for 2012 Slaylists, this week we're turning out attention to those we've lost in 2012. We're talking about the bands that have either broken up or gone on hiatus, as well as the more serious subject of musicians who sadly died at some point over the last 12 months. The first half of this week's Sunday Spotify Slaylist are bands that fall into those first two categories - bands that either finally [...]

Does Doc Zeus not bleed? I admire Adam Yauch. As a diehard hip hop fan and a child of the 1990s, that might seem exceedingly obvious to say. But beyond the superficial of simply “liking” his music, Adam Yauch was an extraordinary human being. Beyond his accomplishments in music and film, his character was of the highest caliber and it's a tragedy beyond writing a few eulogistic words that he was ripped away from the rest of us at the sickeningly young age of 47. He deserved better. Far better. For a [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Phil Andelman Since Friday (May 4), when beloved Beastie Boys rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch died in New York City following a courageous three-year cancer fight, fans and admirers ranging from the Dalai Lama to the Mets have been lining up to pay their respects. All the while, his bandmates kept mum, but last night, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz broke his silence and [...]

Photo by G. RIP MCA on the marquee of Madison Square Garden I am a huge Beastie Boys fan, so naturally I have been really sad about the death of MCA (Adam Yauch), but seeing this on the marquee of Madison Square Garden in New York really brought it home, and it made me cry! RIP Adam! Thank you so much for all the great music that has and will forever rock my world! [...]

“ It feels good to play a little music / Tears running down my face 'cause I love to do it ” Adam Yauch - "Root Down" Beastie Boys - "I Don't Know" Adam Yauch who lost his three year battle with Salivary Gland cancer on Friday (4th May) certainly crammed a lot of life into his all too short 47 years. A Buddist, Tibet freedom campaigner and concert organiser, film distributor, director, magazine [...]
Beastie Boys No Sleep Till Brooklyn THEE video that made my week. #RIPMCA Moving to NY has never felt so right…
As you'll no doubt have heard by now, on Friday 04 May 2012, Adam Yauch - aka MCA - from the Beastie Boys , died after losing his battle against cancer of the parotid salivary gland . He was just 47 years old. To mark this sad occasion, for this week's Sunday Spotify Slaylist we're looking back at the Beastie Boys' early, pre-hip hop punk rock material. While it's true that the Beastie Boys didn't find mainstream success until their game-changing Licensed To Ill , the band never forgot their punk [...]

If you don’t connect with the Beastie Boy’s albums, you fall under one of two categories: 1. You are one of those people who proclaims loudly that you are in search of “high art,” while secretly you crank the volume when “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” comes on the radio. 2. You have no sense of rhythm whatsoever and words such as “inappropriate” escape your mouth on a regular basis. The Beastie’s music doesn’t need to sacrifice fun to make art and doesn’t need to sacrifice art to make fun. Now that this seemingly lighthearted, simple notion comes [...]

As we all know by now, Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed away yesterday at the age of 47. I'm working on a piece for next week, but I wanted to share this video that features the group's entire set from a 1999 concert in Glasgow. Enjoy. R.I.P. MCA.

when i was 12, which was in 1986, my mother surprisingly let me purchase the beastie boys' licensed to ill . it might even been with my own money?!? who knows? but to say that record was a musical awakening would be a huge understatement. sure, i was 12 and didnt get all the references, or really couldnt relate to much of what they were talking about, but musically it changed my course of direction. over the course the three years tween licensed and pauls boutique i believe i re-bought the tape, but eventually got on that glowing disc. [...]

They always say that the good ones die young. Emotions make us human and I always kind of giggled when I would see people expressing any type of emotion when a musician/celebrity would pass; very much in the same way the world collectively gasped upon the news of the passing of Princess Di. I'm not getting any younger and I'm constantly reminded of that when the news of the music world as you knew it starts to fade before your eyes. The first time I felt a sense of loss was the death of [...]
I was greatly saddened to discover that legendary Beastie Boy and all round nice guy Adam Yauch, aka MCA, lost his fight to cancer yesterday. As a youngster I experienced a musical eureka moment when, on the back of that legendary 'Sabotage' video, I spent all my saved pocket money to buy not just on [...]

With the sad news of Adam Yauch 's passing, I am moved to recall the summers of my youth sitting in small cars, packed with tall, gawky friends listening to Beastie Boys cassettes playing at volumes far too loud for our ears. We all knew every word, each pause - every last syllable. We were alive and this was our soundtrack. And so I struggled for the last 24 hours on how to best memorialize MCA - the loss still not fully realized. And it came to me that there's nothing I could write that [...]

(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) RIP (1964-2012): Tibeten Rapper, Father and Beastie Boys Adam MCA Yauch. Rest in peace son. Here's more Beastie discography with lyric and discography references than you could possibly drink. "I think every person has the ability to effect change...Every one of us affects constantly through our actions...through our every word, the way that we interact with other people we're constantly affecting the world." Beastie Boys foolin on Japanese TV is not really suitable for work but [...]

Adam Yauch, 1964-2012 Wow, little did I know I would be setting aside Cover Friday for this: Adam Yauch, aka "MCA" of the Beastie Boys, has died at the far-too-young age of 47, apparently after a battle with cancer that he fought very privately. Within the span of just a few years, The Beastie Boys evolved from their early incarnation circa 1982 as bratty punks (on the Polly Wog Stew EP), to their first crack at hip hop, "Cookie Puss," to the still-bratty (and first significant white) rappers of Licensed [...]

When I heard this morning that Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys had succumbed to cancer, it hit me hard. I didn't expect it, and I was surprised by my reaction. At first. There were the obvious reasons-Yauch was only 47, too young to die, and yet another reminder of our own mortality. Then there was the fact that it was cancer, a horribly ugly disease that the National Cancer Institute projects will claim the lives of more than 575,000 Americans in 2012. The more I thought about it-and, of course began to play Beasties songs [...]

RIP Adam Yauch aka MCA aka Nathaniel Hornblower aka Nathan Wind aka Sir Stuart Wallace who died today aged 47. Full statement. Obits from The Guardian and The New York Times. Devastasting news. His passing marks the end of the trio of Mike D, Adrock and MCA as a band, a unit, a rap group. We will never see the three of them finish each others rhymes in the flesh ever again. The Beastie Boys pretty much define my teenage years. Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, Paul's Boutique and Check [...]
