Photo by SESC Sorocaba Officially, Criolo is a rapper. Unofficially he is a bit of everything else. An ex-teacher who still lives in his favella (Grajaú), his album is a buffet of different sounds and flavors, including samba, MPB, soul, reggae, and more. As soon as I heard the first notes of his album opener, Bogotá, I knew I was in for something special, something different. I approached the album blindly - it wasn't until later in my listening experience that I realized I was listening to a proper rapper, [...]
If you're into highlife music and afrobeat, listen up. You might miss out on a copy of this forthcoming EP from Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang, An Letah . It's coming out via True Panther Sounds on March 20th, and Janka Nabay should have a full-length album dropping through David Byrne's record label, Luaka Bop, later this year. Right from the start, "Eh Mane Ah" delivers this style of music just the way I like it: Fast, bright, and energetic. Janka and his backup singers have enough energy to go around for a stadium-sized [...]

Henri Rousseau never went to the Jungle. He spent all his days in Paris and surrounds, meticulously painting images of nature that were anything but 'natural'. He copied his designs from botanical gardens, zoo pamphlets, and children's books, depicting animals that would never be seen in the same environment. Once he even painted a hand of bananas growing upside down. His paintings are naive, flat and disjointed. This playlist is a musical equivalent to Rousseau paintings - "Jungle" music made by westerners. Electronic emulation of african sounds, drum machines instead of djembé. Starts off mellow before moving into more disjointed territory. [...]

Today calls for a celebration because Santigold is back! There is no shyness to this invasion because her new single is titled "Big Mouth". Along with the track is a music video and her upcoming album Master of My Make Believe via Downtown Records / Atlantic Records . We have to wait a couple of months for the release of her LP but we can groove to the audio and visuals in "Big Mouth". This song is filled with wild jungle beats and loud catchy taunts. Remember the sensation from MIA [...]

Peculiarissima bomba (marginalmente techno-world) l'originale "Tamashek" firmata da Dal Ree offre all'ascoltatore richiami africani (registrati in presa diretta durante un viaggio in [...]

Photo by Cláudio Lwakuti I found out about Y'akoto through a post on Luanda Jazz Festival's Facebook page . It was love at first listen, as soon as she started crooning into the microphone. Jesus. That voice...her accent is glorious, her delivery is unique, her demeanor drips soul and class. It's that type of throaty cadence that I love. Y'akoto is a half German, half Ghanaian chanteuse that reminds me of Mayra Andrade in that both have lived and traveled extensively throughout West Africa and Western Europe, and both possess the type [...]
SonusCast is the journey through the shotgun scattered sonic-mental network of a selected guest in each release, in the form of a simple mix. Influences, anthems, beat-gems and anything that fits. Our previous and inaugural SonusCast courtesy of Valentino of Germany was something special. It's been quite a while since my last mix I've put together for Waves, the last one's really being mixtapes here and here . For a while now I've been busting to put something together along the lines of what we've been calling Ethnographic [...]

We posted the original of this afro beat jive recently, the next day Auntie Flo sent us his subtle edit over, stretching it out and emphasizing that mesmerizing that total freak out that rolls right through it. Its easy to see Flo is heavily inspired by this type of stuff, along with the whole Comeme sound, afro taco... ONYEABOR | GOOD NAME (AUNTIE FLO EDIT)

New York funk band The Underground System Afrobeat is playing at Balliceaux Tuesday, Nov. 8. Some good stuff going on right here. Putting their original Brooklynized stamp on the classic afrobeat style, Underground System Afrobeat is a huge band with a huge sound. 4 horns and 7 rhythm players armed and ready to whip any space into a massive dance party. The ensemble was born in early 2010 as the brainchild of guitarist Peter Matson who fell in love with the music and story of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti [...]

Daphni , aka Dan Snaith, aka Caribou , launches his new label, Jiaolong. This isn't his first try under the disco-funk alias; he has two releases out on the Resista label under the name Daphni, and they are both otherworldly. This limited 12" comprises of three tracks one of which, 'Yes I know', was featured on his Resident Advisor podcast. The a-side features a revision of Togolese monster hit, 'Ne Noya', from afro-beat sensations, Cos-Ber-Zam, and it falls into a dancehall afro-beat number that gets treatment from Dan's ingenious electronic orchestrations and syncopations. The releases' [...]

He is without doubt one of our favourite producers of the last few years so when we hear of a new Cottam EP the excitement levels can reach fever pitch. From the humble beginnings of his slo mo house EP's, the Cottam sound has moved on to bring in more elements of his early influences in acid house and techno. His new work on AUS music is a 3 track monster which while continuing on the acid journey on the title track, still retains the typical Cottam groove which make his productions so special. [...]

Daphni aka Caribou recently installed his vol.2 of edits on Resista records.
