Fantastic Afro-Pop hit from Angelique Kidjo, coming from her 1992 album 'Logozo', which is well worth looking up. As is the very hard to track down 'Jungle Club Mix' of this track, off the 123. MP3: Angelique Kidjo - Batonga In 1967 Sevac Ekian recorded a ceremony of Ingoma Tribe in the East African State Burundi. Back home he developed the idea to arrange a "musical marriage"(mariage musical). Therefore he asked the producer Mike Steiphenson to create a fitting tune to those absorbing drums he brought. In 1971 [...]

I roll my eyes at food geeks all the time. I know, I'm sort of one, but would an actual food geek forget to tell someone that nutritional yeast is in the mix ? Didn't think so. When I ask someone about a dish and they start to describe it down to the smallest detail, for instance the bread, my eyes glaze over spittle forms at the side of my brain stem and I go to my safe place (which used to be my VD until Sarah and Hannah snipped that this weekend). This week, things began to change. [...]
I'm very happy to report that one of my favorite British bands, Little Comets , have returned with a new EP, Worry , coming out December 12th. The tithe track on that has a new video showing the lads off playing some gigs. The song has a bit less of the afro-pop that has become so identifiable with the band, but it is still catchy as fuck. That opening riff had me drop down. If your in the UK, you can pre-order the EP now . Little Comets - "Worry"

A blue jay is a beautiful bird, an animal that easily grabs your eye with its brilliant shades of blue. But there's more to the attractive surface of the blue jay. They're smart, curious, and creative birds. Maybe it's stretch to link a band's namesake to its sound, but, much like a blue jay, Brooklyn's Bluejay have an appealing sound that darts in all sorts of creative directions, not aimlessly, but rather with purpose. What might have been a cacophonous storm of notes is organized and sealed into a taut sound, a force that [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive Pierre Auroux Los Angeles is perhaps the last place to be evoked by the music of Fool's Gold , which mixes African guitar music with the tuneful jangle of the Smiths , all amidst lyrics sung in Hebrew. After wrapping up a tour and releasing their second album, 'Leave No Trace,' Fool's Gold vocalist/bassist Luke Top took some time to chat [...]

I'm an avowed fan of fusing the various flavors of African style guitars with just about anything, unless the singer in question is named "Ezra Koenig." So when I first heard the riff on Fool's Gold's latest single, "Wild Window," I jumped - had the steel guitar players in Amadou and Mariam's Mali-based ensemble joined forces with Yeasayer? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished, to be sure, but what Fool's Gold gives us is almost as good. The track is the first single off of their upcoming album, Leave No Trace , and it's [...]
Found via Mostly Junkfood , here's a compilation of Ghostface Killah and Wu-Tang verses thrown together with afrobeat instrumentals. Produced by Max Tannone, this dude just made two of my favorite worlds collide harder than that asteroid in the hit movie Armageddon would have if Bruce Willis didn't have the guts to stop it. Stream the entire project below, and download it right here .
Tendo

Vampy Weeks, as Carles calls them, quickly made Afropop the most trendy musical influence in indie rock when they burst on the scene in 2008. East-West crossovers quickly became common place on Pitchfork. But understanding Afropop as an influence only, or as something relatively newly discovered, is quite ethnocentric. African pop, although it surely took musical cues from the West, is something uniquely African, something that's been in existence for some time now, and something that should be celebrated in its purest form. So in honor of African pop, try this "palm-wine" guitarist out (palm-wine guitar is a subgenre of [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Foals "A Home. A Heart. Whatever - Crystaleyed" What's so good? Someone was going to combine two of the dominant indie rock strands at some point, weren't they? Well, A Home. A Heart. Whatever. have gone and done it, and they've done it pretty well. It's roughly a meeting place between afro-indie and the the more rock-oriented sound Arcade Fire makes. The band themselves call it a [...]
Lord Huron — Mighty ( Mighty EP , 2010) (Right click to download) [...]
Les Nubians' latest album proves that music transcends language barriers.

Despite being a direct descendant of Sundiata Keita, the founder of the Malian Empire, Salif Keita was cast out of his community and ostracized by his family because of his albinism, which is considered bad luck in rural Mali. Luckily for us he persevered, and started the groups Super Rail Band de Bamako (after the capital city, Bamako) and the more popular Les Ambassadeurs. He later fled during military unrest and established a more prominent career in Paris. He has been hailed by many in West Africa as "The Golden Voice of Africa," and if you live in San Francisco, Los [...]

The Buttercream Gang from sunny California recently sent me over a song from their new album Polite Man. "I Want To Know" combines the strengths of bands like Vampire Weekend and Born Ruffians and adds some great Tropicalia flavor . Polite Man will be out April 13th. mp3 | I Want To Know

Blisses B , a San Fran based quartet, sent over their newest album, Thirty Days, Sixty Years , about a week ago, and man, it just feels right. Listening to the eleven tracks feels like a night of tapas in Madrid; each track is a different flavor, but as a whole they result in a happy stomach and a great time. Showing off a wide variety of influences, a little afropop here, little bit of bluegrass there, the end product feels organic. Tracks like this jamandahalf highlight why I am so excited about this group. Meticulously crafted, no [...]
OK... here is round one of our SXSW posting spree. REPTAR! Quentin posted on these guys a while back, but I had never seen them live. This band definitely has staying power, combining fun dancey pop with weird costumes (teletubbies) and giant props (ears, bats, squids). Their indie-dance-banger "Ready or Not" [...]

Vampire Weekend simultaneously represents so much of what I hate and love about the American music scene. I'll be the first to admit that their last album, Contra , caught my attention from about twenty seconds into its first track, "Horchata," when songwriters Rostam Batmanglij and Ezra Koenig decided to stop dicking around with the thumb piano and put in some seriously legit South African vocal harmony and beats a la Graceland in the background. A lot of Contra represented what they had to offer the American music scene: a (kind of) rock band [...]
