Album Review: “Boys & Girls” by Alabama Shakes

It’s official: soul revivalism is in full swing. If you’ve heard of Adele, or Estelle, or Amy Winehouse, or Duffy, or James Blake, I can’t imagine you would disagree with that sentiment. What differentiates Alabama Shakes from the aforementioned artists, ... Continued

ALABAMA SHAKES’ BOYS AND GIRLS [7.0]

ALABAMA SHAKES’ BOYS AND GIRLS [7.0] Let's be honest, country rock isn’t exactly the most en vogue or adored genre out there, but that shouldn’t stop you from embracing it - especially when a group like Alabama Shakes   (@alabama_shakes) are trying to diversify their sound and blur it against other musical backdrops. On their debut, the four piece from Athens, Alabama take the stock ingredients of bluesy country rock and blend it with more soulful elements. If you drew a line with Creedence Clearwater on one side and Roberta Flack on the other, you'd probably find [...]

Hurray For The Riff Raff: Look Out Mama

Hurray For The Riff Raff: Look Out Mama self-released, 2012 In the five plus years since songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra began the project, Hurray For The Riff Raff have always been a standout in the particular genre of waltzy folk-pop common among the groups of buskers and street musicians who've established formal musical partnerships in New Orleans.  In a spectrum that is bounded by the delightful Bywater orchestra Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? at it's most baroque extreme, HFTRR's country tinged ballads have existed comfortably at the opposite, more modestly appointed end. While the band [...]

Alabama Shakes: Boys & Girls

Alabama Shakes - Hold On - David Letterman 4-12-12
Flipping past The Late Show With David Letterman one night, I was astonished and astounded to see/hear what seemed to be a howling classic blues diva fronting a wild and rowdy Southern rock band. It was the incomparable Brittany Howard and her band Alabama Shakes performing "Hold On," the awesome, wailing blues-rock opener from their [...]

Alabama Shakes – Boys & Girls

Alabama Shakes ’ self-produced debut, recorded last year in Nashville’s Bomb Shelter studio before there was such a big buzz about them, comes freighted with expectation. People I like, like them, and have talked them up: they’ve opened for Drive-By Truckers, and are currently on tour with Jack White. Much has been made of the analogue authenticity of their Muscle Shoals rock/soul lineage, and the fact that they hail from just up the road in Athens (Alabama, not Georgia) does this association no harm. So, can they carry the weight which is being placed on their young shoulders? [...]

Now Downloading: New Releases 04.10.12 - Alabama Shakes, M. Ward

M. Ward - The First Time I Ran Away
Alabama Shakes dish some soulful rock on their debut release. There's plenty of post-Easter, post-Passover new releases to sneeze at as you reach for the Clariton amidst all the bloomage (YOU SWORE, NO MORE FLOWER METAPHORS!). It's Spring Break somewhere, so pop in a few of these tasty offerings in your portable media player choice (is it any wonder folks will write 'iPod' even if they don't own one?) and lie back in the break destination of your choice. I'm off to San Jose del Cabo, myself, for a few days of carpel [...]

Album Review: Alabama Shakes – Boys and Girls

The Alabama Shakes seemed to have come out of nowhere but the sort of small-town ‘gee, let’s do this’ kind of goodness than can only emerge out of the useless mass between New York and Los Angeles called ‘America.’ It shows in their soul-and-bluesrock mixture, and the fact that no one single player emerges as [...]

The Rockometer: Boys and Girls by Alabama Shakes

The Rockometer: Boys and Girls by Alabama Shakes Alabama Shakes Boys and Girls ATO Records Don't you hate it when you're reading a review of a hot new band, like let's say, this one by the throwback, soul-shaking rock band, Alabama Shakes, for example, and the reviewer does that classic reviewer dick move and instead of dealing with the album at hand says something along the lines of, "Why bother with Alabama Shakes when you could be listening to other better bands like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Dirtbombs, The Detroit Cobras or Heartless Bastards? Have you [...]

Album Review: Alabama Shakes – Boys & Girls

With as long as rock and the blues have been around, you’d think the creative output would stop at some point. Yet here we have Alabama Shakes, a band who’s helping to reinvigorate the blues. The band is comprised of vocalist Brittany Howard, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson and guitarist Heath Fogg and Boys & Girls is their debut album. The album opener “Hold On” is a slow cooker, but it’s a warm welcome that starts the debut right. “I Found You” is a love song about finding someone who will treat you right. “Cause [...]

Review: Alabama Shakes – Boys And Girls

Alabama Shakes Boys & Girls out 4/10 MP3 | CD | Stream B+ Let's set the stage here: There are certain decades of music that I'm just not big on. That's a huge, sweeping statement that might get me pretty roughed up somewhere, but let's just play devil's advocate here. Thus, I was at first a bit skeptical of Alabama Shakes. Upon first listen, however, the group's soulful swells immediately swept me in before I [...]

Album Review: Alabama Shakes – Boys & Girls

Alabama Shakes is a blues-rock group from Athens, AL, that formed in 2009. As such, they missed out on both the original blues-rock explosion of the '70s (ah, duh) and much of the subsequent revival as facilitated by the likes of The White Stripes and The Black Keys. Even still, their debut LP, Boys & Girls , is a profound submission, one which injects fresh life into the genre while maintaining its blazing spirit. Sounding unlike any other young female singer working today, front woman Brittany Howard's voice is a dynamo of emotional vulnerability and raspy [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: “Boys & Girls” by Alabama Shakes

The Alabama Shakes’ amalgamation of old school rock/soul with a pinch of blues has created an album that is begging to be savored on vinyl.

Alabama Shakes, Live Session #100

Alabama Shakes, Live Session #100 The Alabama Shakes have been on quite the ride over the last year. They have emerged from relative unknown status to an opening slot for Jack White. We were lucky enough to have them in studio this past December as they were in the midst of their meteoric rise. Their manager, Christine, mentioned that guitarist Heath Fogg had commented that he wanted the ride to slow down. But I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. While The Shakes have continued their rise, they play each song like its their last.  I've seen them three times [...]

Album Review: Alabama Shakes

Album Review: Alabama Shakes "It's when they grasp for the rockier blues terrain that Boys & Girls is at its most thrilling..." Alabama Shakes  |  Boys & Girls Hold On , the opening track and first single from Athens four-piece the Alabama Shakes' debut long player, was first sketched out and worked up on-stage in the middle of a live show last year. It makes for a gloriously restrained beginning, with a laid-back strut to the melodic chime of Heath Fogg's guitar and the impeccable rhythm section of bassist Zac Cockrell and drummer Steve Johnson. They [...]

Alabama Shakes "Boys & Girls" Album Review

Alabama Shakes "Boys & Girls" Album Review "Revival Rock" is a term that has become so prominent in modern rock music that it is almost nauseating; swallowing up bands whole, as many listeners turn away from past mistakes they've made in admiring bands that succumb to the pressure of staying "true to one's roots." (We don't need to name names here, but many of these bands then either fizzle out or transgress into a mainstream abomination.) The quartet Alabama Shakes (formed in 2009 in Athens, Alabama) have hardly been a secret in [...]

Alabama Shakes – Debut EP

Alabama Shakes - "I Found You" - Live from the Shoals 8-21-2011
Busting out of Muscle Shoals, the Alabama Shakes are a 4-piece that are simply amazing. Fronted by Brittany Howard, they knock it out of the park on their debut EP. Part Rolling Stones, part Sharon Jones and dripping with influences from Aretha to Otis, this is one of the most impressive debut EPs I have heard in quite some time. After my first listen, I wept tears of joy. They are going to be paying a visit to Chicago on December 15th at The Hideout and will be visiting Austin in March for SxSW. Take a listen to [...]
