When I saw the lineup for the brand new Bottle Rock Napa Valley festival, my jaw dropped. The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Shins, Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Bird, Edward Sharpe, Dirty Projectors, Iron and Wine, Mavis Staples, Sharon Van Etten, Best Coast... the list went on and on . Plus, the festival is in the heart of Bay Area wine country, just an hour driving distance from San Francisco. I had to go. Well, the festival is happening in a mere week, and I'll be there. Find me happily sipping wine from a local [...]

I saw a lot of great shows in 2012, from all the great shows in NYC during CMJ, from my trip to Bonnaroo, and my duel visits to Chicago for Lollapalooza/Pitchfork. I saw many bands both big in small in a wide variety of venues, and made many good memories along the way. When it came down to it, these shows were my absolute favorite concert moments of the year: 1. Radiohead @ Bonnaroo (June 8, 2012) 2. My Morning Jacket @ The Capitol Theatre (December [...]

Here, we look at the top 25 tracks from 2012 that do not feature on any of my top 10 albums of [...]

As you probably know from my rantings this year, finding great music has been in short supply. I feel like I want to like more music than I actually do. I follow the new releases pretty religiously...to the point that Tuesday is as sacred in my house as Sunday is in most of middle America. I'm always looking for the next Bon Iver, the XX, or Arcade Fire. But with the mediocre batch of

Photo credit: Lexi Namer After more than a decade of uniting fans of all backgrounds, Bonnaroo sometimes feels less like a music festival and more like a vibrant, thriving city of 80,000 that only springs to life for one weekend every year. The consistently excellent lineups (headlining this year: Phish , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Radiohead , The Beach Boys , Bon Iver , Avett Brothers , and The Shins ) are always a major draw, but what keeps people coming back is [...]

Another year, another Bonnaroo : one long, grueling weekend, filled with lines to write home about, clouds of dust, and the hottest weather you can imagine. That's how it goes every year, right? Actually, this year broke the cycle - and in many ways. Gone were the impossibly long entrance lines of old. This time around, you could get to Manchester on Thursday morning and be inside the gates to set up camp within a half an hour. (The longest wait I personally heard of this year was only three hours, a time that used to be on the [...]
