It seems like it was not that long ago that I saw Alabama Shakes tear it up at Bonnaroo . It was arguably one of the best sets I saw all year, let alone at Bonnaroo, and I distinctly remember thinking during the firey rendition of "Hold On" that it was only a matter of time until they hit the big time. That time is now, as the band graced the famed SNL sage and absolutely killed it. They played "Hold On" and "Always Alright", which you'll recognize if you've seen Silver Linings Playbook (go [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Video , Television Pieter M. van Hattem Last night, Alabama Shakes played "Saturday Night Live" for the first time. The rootsy rockers performed their breakout hit "Hold On" and "Always Alright," which was written for the "Silver Linings Playbook" soundtrack. And even though host Christoph Waltz messed up their name in his monologue ("Alabama Shake is here!") the band made the most of their big late-night [...]
Alabama Shakes appeared on tonight's Christoph Waltz-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live as musical guest. The band put on a stellar performance of "Hold On" with lead singer Brittany Howard's powerful vocals in the spotlight. Alabama Shakes' debut album, Boys & Girls , is now available. After the "who we lost" montage at last night's Grammys detailing the many legendary musicians and music industry vets who passed away over the last 12 months, Mavis Staples, Mumford and Sons, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, Elton John, T-Bone Burnett and Zac Brown paid tribute to the last person listed in the montage, The Band drummer Levon Helm , by performing The Weight. Elton introduced the tune and dedicated The Weight not only to the musicians we lost but also to the Sandy Hook school victims [...]

It really seems like at this point Alabama Shakes can do no wrong. I mean all they need to do is hand Brittany a guitar and it is pretty certain that magic is going to happen shortly after. So it should come as no surprise that these Blues Rockers out of Bama are now being asked to make music for movie soundtracks. And that is exactly what we have here with their new song "Always Alright". The song seems fitting for the upcoming movie which stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence who appear to [...]

We've seen Alabama Shakes bring the house down in full-band, electric form live and on their studio debut, Boys & Girls , but a stripped-down acoustic set from two members of the breakout group is a bit harder to come by. Enter la Blogothèque , one of the best producers of this type of fare, for which frontwoman Brittany Howard and guitarist Heath Fogg roamed the streets of Paris unplugged. Not surprisingly, they broke out one of the record's more subdued cuts, the title track, before a brand new tune made its official debut for A Take [...]

One of the best parts of a live show is hearing the ways a band rearranges their songs for the stage. Slight kinks in the guitars and alterations to the rhythms can enhance the experience as well as give new life to a recorded track that's been played countless times on repeat. The Alabama Shakes took that approach with their first video, using an alternate arrangement for "Hold On" that stemmed from a prior appearance on KEXP, and have continued this trend with "I Ain't The Same." The Alabama Shakes are phenomenal live, and have [...]
