Two remixes and a new track comprise A Lazurus Soul's new, free EP Dublin Gold Exchange. Harmless Noise pointed out yesterday that the three-track release went up over the weekend to little fanfare, which is in keeping with the band's career to date. They've never really gained the heights they [Read more]

We're past half way in 2011 and the quality in music produced by Irish artists is getting better and better. I've already reviewed three albums this year where I've given full ratings for. In other words the albums from Favourite Sons, Jukebox Gypsy and Reader's Wives were flawless. Here's the best fifteen new tunes I've heard in 2011. [Disclaimer; No one person can listen to every Irish song released but [...]

Nope The Top 50 isn't the name of a new band although it's not the worse name for a band! It's the time of the year where for aesthetic purposes I list my top 50 Irish artists .... at the moment ... living in Ireland ..... who have released a single/album ..... and who pay me backhanders! Over the next 2 weeks [Monday - Friday] I'll be working up the list five acts at a time and telling the world why each [...]
Three albums in a decade isn't everyone's idea of a high workrate, but when the songs in question have the intensity of a long dark night of the soul in conversation with Samuel Beckett, Cathal Coughlan and Eamonn Dunphy, it's easier to imagine that creating these dark arts must be an emotionally draining experience. Through A Window In The Sunshine Room is A Lazarus Soul mainman Brian Brannigan's state of the nation address, and it doesn't make for pretty listening, as he lambasts post-Tiger Ireland, peopled by characters "in your SUV and your [...]

I've sometimes wondered what the artists I've critiqued have thought of that review. That, of course, makes the massive assumption that they actually cared enough to read the review. InReview attempts to answer that question. In this series, I will engage in face-to-face interviews with musicians, basing my questions on my critique of their current record. Confused? Hopefully, it'll make a lot more sense when you get to the end of this post. The first thing I notice when I enter The International Bar on Dublin's Wicklow Street is Brian Brannigan's beard. Last time I saw [...]
Below you get to listen to the third album by a band called A Lazarus Soul. It is released for purchase on January 29, and there will be a launch gig in the International Bar on Wicklow Street, Dublin. Or you can download it now, via Bandcamp. And while you [Read more]

A Lazarus Soul are releasing their third album "Through a Window in the Sunshine Room" on Jan 29th and includes some excellent tracks in the typical ALS understated way. Bookended by instrumentals 'Through A Window in the Sunshine Room' contains nine tracks of unglamorous beauty. There's no indie classic, breakthrough single or sing-a-long choruses here. It does however have Brian Brannigan's pure vocals, his astute social observations and a soundtrack which is complex in nature but entirely listenable. Brian along with Tony Hegerty [...]

Every week, the 4fortyfour bloggers will come together to share their song of the week. It might not be a new song, it might not even be a song they like, but it will be the song that has provided the soundtrack to their week. Peter Nagle The Prairie Dawgs - 'Drift Away' I got a welcome surprise last week when the cd which had been stuck in the car stereo for a few months mysteriously ejected itself. Only a few days previously I emptied the car of all my [...]
'Amhrán Sa Lá' is the big ambition of the blog for this year. If google translation is to be believed 'Amhrán Sa Lá' is the Irish for 'A Song a Day'. I will post a song a day in the guise of a downloadable song, bandcamp or reverbnation widget or simply through YouTube. It means that you the reader should get to hear a song [new or old] from an Irish artist every day. There will of course still be the usual reviews, lists and features on the blog. A Lazarus Soul - We Start Fires [...]

This top 50 list contains the 50 tracks from 50 different artists and like all lists they represent the music which I adore at this very moment in time. 11: Sean [Dr.] Millar - Sports and Pussy Sean Millar is a literary genius as demonstrated again by his 'Of The People' parts one and two releases this year. I adore this little folky number which contains scathing [...]

Is there a more underrated band in Ireland than A Lazarus Soul? Take a listen to this mini album which was the self-titled debut from A Lazarus Soul. It's a pure album of beauty where the songs are meaningful, atmospheric and engaging. A Lazarus Soul will be releasing their third album soon. More info: http://www.myspace.com/alazaru ssoul The album is free using the bandcamp widget below. [...]
A Lazarus Soul are returning with a third album entitled 'Throught The Window in the Sunshine Room' very soon and have offered their new single as a free download! A Penthouse View by alazarussoul According to their MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/alazaru ssoul "The record was done by myself, Tony Hegarty and with Joe Chester engineering. We also were very lucky to get some of our local heros involved, Martin Kelly (Sunbear/ [...]
Nearly a year ago to the day inspired by The Irish Times compiled best 50 Irish acts at that moment in time I posted my Top 50 of Irish Artists. The only stipulation was that the artist had to gig or release an album in the last 12 months prior to the compiled list. My choices last year were based on bands and artists who I connected with at the time. 1. The Swell Season/Frames/Glen 2. Terry Sutton 3. Martin Finke 4. Pony Club 5. Lisa [...]

On 23rd of September this year the Future Kings of Spain posted this on their MySpace blog: http://blogs.myspace.com/futur ekingsofspain "Future Kings Of Spain started out in February 2000 as Joey Wilson, Anton Hegarty and Bryan McMahon. They rehearsed for 5 months until they had a set of songs long enough to play in front of people. Finally and with no name, in July 2000 they played to some friends in a nightclub in Dublin. In December 2000, introduced as Future Kings Of Spain, they played their first real show. They were [...]

Blind Pilot from Dundalk have been added to the bill so it will be a 9pm sharp kick off time! See you there? Right! If you're in Limerick this Friday you should catch kiernan McMullan's big headline gig in Dolan's! This Friday i'm really looking to finally catch A Lazarus Soul in [...]

A list of gigs that with the greatest intention I shall be at over the next few months! Monday night Upstairs in Whelans is the album launch for Garret Baker's home produced debut album. I'm really looking forward to this because from the little I have heard of Garret's music I think it will be a night of great music. http://www.myspace.com/garretb aker [...]
Nialler has encouraged us all to make a list to help promote the best Irish music out there at the moment. For an hour yesterday and another hour or two this morning I thought about all the Irish artists I like at this moment in time. It's not an easy thing to do a list because I know I'm leaving out far too many good bands. However I'm happy to publish this list today as it defines what this blog is about and let's ya know what I think is great music in Ireland at this moment [...]
I was originally planning to go see the Butterfly Explosion gig in Whelans on St. Patrick's Eve but I'm having a re-think due to the free gig organised in The Lantern Bar in Navan. St. Paddy's Eve is a whole 15 years since I met my future wife so we are thinking a night of singer-songwriters is better than a packed Whelans. I'm sure Whelans will be a sell out for Butterfly Explosion and A Lazarus Soul. Performing on Monday are Joy Booth , Peadar Farrelly , Barry Mc'Auley, Eugene Donegan, Ruairi Coogan with more [...]
