Feeling particularly...Thankful this week? You're probably back at home, preparing to bicker over the last leg of turkey with your great-great aunt's third cousin, but it's time to Breakaway from your family and friends for One Minute because I've got a treat of the Kellegendary variety. Did that Sober you up? Yeah, thought so. As we all know, it's been over 10 whole years since Kelly Clarkson was crowned the winner of the first season of American Idol , all Because Of You. And after providing the theme song for every break-up, [...]

Calvin Harris : A man who needs no real introduction...but I will, anyway. After carving out early smashes with the likes of MuuMuse faves like Róisín Murphy 's "Off & On" (which was scrapped and given to the also amazing Sophie Ellis-Bextor ) and Kylie Minogue 's "In My Arms," the skyrocketing Scottish-born DJ/producer has since seen an explosion of success with Kelis ("Bounce"), Example ("We'll Be Coming Back"), Florence Welch ("Sweet Nothing"), Ne-Yo ("Let's Go") and of course, his already legendary club classic "We Found Love" [...]

... You scream, I scream, we've all been screaming for a new Pig Destroyer album since 2007's Phantom Limb left us wanting more. But more important than our shrill cries are those that come pouring out of J.R. Hayes, along with those ever-punishing blast beats and the nineteen tracks and thirty-two relentless minutes of grind that make up 2012's Book Burner . On their earliest releases the band's political and societal grievances were more at the forefront than they have been recently, where personal issues bubbled up and over-but Book Burner [...]

... "Rob Halford rules, man!" is a statement that has been uttered by many a jean vest-wearing metalhead since the mid-seventies, and this one has no hesitation about saying it in 2012. Listening to Screaming For Vengeance , it's clear that the heavy-level riffage, piercing vocals, and suggestive lyrics wrote the blueprint for virtually all of the 80's metal that would follow in its path. The 30th anniversary edition of Screaming for Vengeance will be released on September 3rd, and features not just the remastered original album and bonus tracks, but also a live [...]

... In the past we've debated how 'metal' the noise and drone of Locrian really is; it's a discussion that will likely continue (probably even in the comments here). For me, tracks like "Augury In An Evaporating Tower"-off the upcoming expanded reissue of The Clearing and The Final Epoch- remind me of the scenes in horror films where a killer drags a helpless woman down a dark hallway as she claws at the carpet, shrieking for help-eerie and plenty unsettling, whether it's metal or not. Slow and quiet enough to be torturous, yet [...]

... The words "country music" tend to elicit groans from a lot of folks of respectable taste (metalheads included), in the same vein as the words "bands signed to Victory Records" or "Liturgy" might. But that twinge in our guts is more a conditioned response to the squeaky clean Nashville pop-country scene; real-deal country artists-the Hanks, Waylons, and Merles of the world-deal with social inequality, desolate towns on the edge of life, and relationships gone to hell as well as anything out there. This is something that Scott Kelly (Neurosis, Shrinebuilder) is well aware of, having [...]

The double album is a tricky beast. Few can pull it off-Pink Floyd, Minutemen, Genesis, and a handful more have been successful-so it came as a surprise when Savannah sludge-dudes Baroness took a stab at two discs with Yellow & Green , officially released this past Tuesday. The record side-steps metal much like fellow southern doombringers Torche did earlier this year when they traded heavy metal for hard rock on Harmonicraft. The results feel like something altogether new-experimental but inviting, expansive and reflective in a way that somehow reflects the album's titular color themes. (I [...]

Three years ago, Dying Fetus decided to Descend Into Depravity with eight tortured tracks, relating a history of being "Conceived Into Enslavement", explaining in the process that we, as a species, are "Atrocious By Nature". But here we are in 2012, and they've once again risen to Reign Supreme over the American Death Metal scene with their seventh full-length record. "Subjected To A Beating" is the current single streaming on their BandCamp page (see link below), and that's exactly how you'll feel after listening to these nine new tracks of technical, guttural death, filled [...]

Ambient, transcendental, black and other fairly new and experimental kinds of metal seem to be soaking up a lot of the attention these days, online and in our speakers. But sometimes it feels nice kick back and relax with a little old-fashioned grindcore, ya know? Having been around since 1990, Phobia is a classic hardcore-based grind band, having come up only a few years after our grind forefathers of yore, Napalm Death. Still at it today after twenty-some records and splits, Napalm Death's newest album "Remnants of Filth" contains all of the blastbeats, spoken sound bite intros and [...]

Animal-loving grindcore gods Cattle Decapitation first forged the death-grind high seas back when Atlanta was hosting the summer Olympics. (That's 1996, for those of you playing along at home.) Over the years, Cattle Decap has dealt with distribution quarrels; when their 2002 album To Serve Man and their 2004 album Humanure were released, both featured album covers that were deemed too graphic for distribution in Europe. (I guess a cow excreting human remains doesn't digest well for those with sensitive stomachs.) This tradition is alive and well in 2012 with Monolith of Humanity [...]

Just like fine wine and food, music is best experienced when paired properly. White wine complements poultry or fish. Epic power-metallers Dragonforce, I've found, go best with video games. Street-Jammer told us how Immortal enhances Skyrim, but it seems to me that Dragonforce most enhances Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. (I have a lot of research to back up this theorem, i.e., countless hours in college watching my dude friends play this game, to this music, while I slugged back PBR's on a futon.) Debuting next Tuesday, April 17, The Power Within is [...]

Ebay. Die Hard . Axl Rose's strange decision to get dreadlocks . All of these things, believe it or not, are younger than Autopsy , who have existed at the heart of the American death metal scene for more than two decades. Officially released yesterday, All Tomorrow’s Funerals is the latest chapter in the amazing history of these legends. This release contains new studio tracks recorded in late 2011 - including a re-recorded version of classic oldie "Mauled to Death" - plus all of Autopsy's past EP's and rarities, specially remastered [...]

As evidenced by our review of the album , we here at Invisible Oranges have a fondness for the high-octane, '70s era spliffs and riffs displayed by Christian Mistress' on their new release, Possession. The resounding vocals of Christian Mistess frontwoman Christine Davis are not unlike those of Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson on the classic 1977 track, "Barracuda," as Davis' voice writhes through verses about the afterlife. The excellent guitar solos by Oscar Sparbel and Ryan McClain and delightfully chugging bass of Johnny Wulf aren't too shabby, either. With the album's release date set [...]

It's Valentine's Day, and you know what that means: Sorrow and extinction. Right? Therefore, it's especially appropriate that today Invisible Oranges-in partnership with Profound Lore-is giving you a chance to win a copy of Sorrow and Extinction , the new doom-metal masterpiece from Pallbearer . To be released by PFL on on February 21st, these five tracks of grief and pain combine the thunderous low end of modern day doom with vocals reminiscent of an early period Ozzy. To enter to win a copy of this wrecking ball of an album, share with us in [...]

Blood, skulls and crucifixion have been major themes in metal for quite some time; however, I have never seen a band amp up the grim and create an album cover that shows the slitting of Jesus' wrists as the blood pours into a skull. (Not even Cannibal Corpse!) So imagine my surprise when this is the image that greets me on the front of Goatwhore 's new album Blood For The Master , to be released on Valentine's Day. Taking things to the next level of gruesome translates past the artwork on this album and pertains to the music as well. Relentless riffs, blackened thrash [...]

Aborted has been around the block. After 16 years, six studio ablums and many, many members, this Belgian band has mastered the art of grindcore seduction, and their latest album, Global Flatline, brings the pain. All of the classic elements of grind are there: slowly elevating intros, squealing guitars, punishing vocals and double bass for days. Recorded in Denmark, a few select guest vocalists make appearances, including Jason Netherton of Misery Index. And as is to be expected, gruesomely apocalyptic cover art is effectively utilized. The album is being released today, but for your chance to win a free copy, tell us in the comments [...]

If every metal subgenre had its own table in the middle-school cafeteria, black metal would probably be the too-cool clique that wouldn't let you sit with them. Its slow, drone-like state says to thrash, “We don’t want to be fast like you!” Its drawn-out tracks of 10 minutes or more say to grindcore, "We don’t want to be choppy and short like you!” And its dark, cancerously evil tone says to prog and pop, “We don’t want to have falsetto and wailing guitar solos like you!” That exclusivity is amplified when the music in question comes from France: the [...]
