Adele's album 21 has topped the sales charts in the US for the second year running.
Hurray! Billboard has published the 2012 Soundscan numbers ! I love this data and I've been collecting it for years, looking up back issues of Billboard and scouring old news reports. It's fascinating to see how the numbers evolve over time as people's music purchasing habits change. Soundscan has been counting music sales since 1991, and I'd love to be able to fill in some of the missing data, especially total album sales from 1991-1995 and vinyl sales prior to 2006. So if you can hook a brother up, let me know. I may also add in [...]

Every year we hear about how the music industry is falling off dramatically. This doesn't seem to hold true in 2012, though, as projected album sales continues to decline only slightly year over year. While there are certainly no signs of growth, I suppose in a time where everything is going downhill, this might actually be a figure worth celebrating. This particular number reflects both physical and digital sales, as total falls but 4% while digital has made an impressive increase by 6%. These numbers don't include streaming and other subscription services, though, so it will be very [...]

Digital Music News Despite a lot of talk about the failing, desperate music industry and the inability of artists to sell music in 2012, things aren't looking as ugly as you might expect. The decline of record sales remains a slow, steady fall, but the music industry did not jump out the window in 2012. At least, not in the United States. According to Soundscan data, album sales for 2012 are coming in at around 4% below 2011 levels (includes both physical and digital). Downloads rose by about 6%. ( [...]
Yesterday marked the release of three higher profile album, coming from the likes of the Game , Bruno Mars and Big Boi . While we don't care much about Bruno Mars, apparently it isn't half bad for what it is. His new LP called Unorthodox Jukebox is set to pull in a promising 150,000 copies. We are certainly more interested in Game and Big Boi, though, both of which look a bit dismal on paper. Jesus Piece is set to fall short of three figures with a mediocre 75,000 copies sold, while Daddy Fat [...]
New music sales stats via NARM President Jim Donio: "After six previous Top 10 albums, Rihanna scored her first chart-topper this week selling about a quarter million of her new Unapologetic set... Adele’s 21 became, appropriately, the 21st album to cross the 10-million-sales mark since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. While overall album sales volume is down about 4% for the year, digital album sales volume is up about 15% and track sales are up 6%." Major new releases in the next few weeks could help the industry make up for some of the [...]

Frank Ocean is someone who is doing quietly very well! His debut album "Channel Orange" has hit sales of 370,000 since it's release back in July. Sales have not been finalised yet as physical CDs are still to be sold wordwide, but it's a very decent number for a first album which didn't hit #1. Frank should be proud of himself! Here's a breakdown: USA sales: 131,000 UK sales: 13,000 (making him the first artist to enter iTunes Top 20 [...]

Billboard 's new Top 200 album chart shows the first full effects of sales of Bee Gees LPs following the death of member Robin Gibb on May 20. (Gibb passed away on a Sunday, which is the day Billboard uses as the cut-off for weekly chart data.) The publication noted yesterday that the Bee Gees sold 27,000 albums in the past week, which is a 339% leap from the 6,000 the trio moved the seven days prior. The [...]

However, it seems like she 'effing killed it', using the 'tank on SNL' marketing strategy 2 cruise her way to the #2 spot in America. She sold 77k albums in the United States. People constantly debate whether the phrase, "All publicity is good publicity," actually has any credence, but in the case of Lana Del Rey , the [...]

However, #LDR took to twitter in order to tell her fans 'i love yall', while at the same time telling her h8rz "Yall are paying my effing bill, bitches!" It's both inevitable and unfortunate that an artist will often see the best sales of their career after their death. Since her passing on January 20, Etta James' music sales have risen 378% from the following week, with 30,000 albums sold. The iconic singer also nets her highest-charting album ever with The Best of Etta James - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection , which hit #46 on the Billboard 200 with 8,000 sold. Her signature song "At Last" was her best-selling song of the week, re-entering at #29 on the [...]

The big news is that total albums sales actually went up a little for the first time since 2004. Of course, considering the fact that physical CD sales slid another 6% and Lady Gaga's Born This Way sold a million copies for 99 cents, you can be sure that total album revenue is still way, way down this year. But hey, folks bought 3.9 million vinyl albums in 2011! And check this out: "67% of all vinyl albums sold in 2011 were purchased at an independent music store and nearly 3 out [...]

It can help a buzzband pick up more sales 2 cool dads who just want to legally purchase an album at a chill price. Now it seems like Billboard, the 'Chartkeeping company' will no longer include sales of albums that cost less than $3.49 in their chart numbers. Lady Gaga and Amazon [...]
