The VPME FEATHERS, one of our top tips for 2013 are set to release their début album "If All Now Here" on April 15th. Happily we can report that it's a genuinely fabulous début from a collective who look set for great things this year. The driving creative force behind this musical tour de force is former Cruel Black Dove singer-songwriter Anastasia Dimou who hasn’t so much reinvented herself; she's found herself with the creation of the dark swirling synthgaze female collective that is FEATHERS. [...]

G G done a boo-boo... After all the painstaking ordering and selecting and removing and replacing, it's typical that I would mess up at some point. Once whittled down to 50, the ranking process for the album of the year post buffoonishly began by first selecting the top ten and then going back and sorting numbers 50 through 11. Of course I couldn't completely commit to ten albums in the top 10 so left it at 11 and planned to amend this once I had progressed with 50-11. In [...]

At the expense of my poor mushed mental melon, it's finally complete: The G-Man's Top 50 albums of the year... January is all about lists: New year's resolutions, dietary declarations, bucket lists and, of course, the all important, all-encompassing "best of"s. In reality, placing works of art into a static order of ranking is akin to choosing your favourite child. Sure the hyperactive little fella may drive you nuts when all you want is [...]
Well, another year has come and gone, and it's time to post my favorite albums of the past year. 2012 seemed to lack a lot of depth in terms of quality albums. There are a few great ones at the top of the list, but once you get past the first 6 or 7, the [...]
AFTER a record number of votes being cast this year - 115 in total - the winner of this year's Albums of the Year poll is... (drum roll) ...God Save The Clean, by Clean George IV. The album pipped frontrunners Fiona Apple, Alt-J, and Grizzly Bear to the gong - no doubt helped by the vote being publicised on Clean George IV's official Facebook and Twitter! Also a good sign was the fact the each entry received at least one vote this year. So congratulations to Clean George IV [...]
Better late than never, here is my Top 20 of 2012. A couple of albums I’ve come by too late to evaluate, such as Donald Fagen’s Sunken Condos, which after one listen I suspect would rank pretty highly on this list. I’ve prepared a compilation; tracklisting and link are in the comments section. The tracks have all been reduced to 128kbps; if you like what you hear, please buy the album (artists’ websites are included in the text). I’d be pleased to know if any sales have been inspired by this post, so if you have bought something [...]
2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. EVERY year I, my like most music writers both professional and amateur, bust an absolute gut to compile an Albums of the Year shortlist. Mine can be found here. However, with the best will in the world, no one person's perspective on the past 12 months can be all-encompassing - some of the best music will have been overlooked for one reason or another. Some will have been really low key or cult like Samuel Jackson Five's awesome LP, some will have been released too late to make an impression on a list, such as Gallops and [...]

Slightly behind schedule, the countdown continues. We'll fit it all in before the year is through... (hopefully). 10. Flume - Flume Another latecomer to the album of the year stakes here, with Flume ’s self-titled debut seeing a release at the end of November. Although we’ve only been enjoying it for slightly under a month, we feel confident in declaring this one of the year’s best. Known to his parents as Harley Streten , Flume is one of those frustratingly talented wunderkinds who despite [...]

The VPME It's time for the annual VPME Awards, as we reflect on the all that was awesome astounding and amazing during the musical year! It's also a time to reward our favourite artists with our version of a musical Oscar, the quite stunning and splendiferous "Pipster." Hewn from genuine 24-carat pixels, and then sculpted onto 5mm thick glossed, laminated PVC Board, this magnificent trophy will surely brighten up the drabbest of downstairs loos, tour vans, rehearsal spaces, or even garages. But on a serious note it's our chance to say thank you to a host [...]

After the hype, gossip, and sensationalist 4-real authenticity debate that greeted Lizzy Grant aka Lana Del Rey as she emerged into the spotlight, this collection of sumptuous and rich songs received a critical slapping in the U.S. “It’s the album of a faked orgasm– a collection of torch songs with no fire,” said Pitchfork. “Given her chic image, it’s a surprise how dull, dreary and pop-starved Born to Die is,” said Rolling Stone. Yet Born [...]

10. Dead Sara - S/T Pocket Kid Records Dead Sara’s debut album kicked the asses of many an experienced artist this year. Female-fronted, powerful and catchy as all hell, the band have gone from relative obscurity to an upcoming tour with British rock giants Muse in less than a year, and it’s easy to see why. This album is not only explosive as a debut effort, but it’s impact has been enough to blow much of its competition out of the water. Their music is both ruthless [...]
