On this title track from one of Grouper's two new albums, Liz Harris creates "vastness," and packs it into three minutes of arpeggios and ghostly vocals. The lo-fi production makes the music really smudgy and obscured, but there's still something therapeutic about the repetition and textures here. Listening to this is a lot like walking through a foggy graveyard, or floating slowly atop a body of water on a starry night. Grouper's "Alien Observer" is beautiful. The track feels almost sacred, like sacred choral music. A track perhaps best heard in context of a some edge of the galaxy cathedral or, in my case (fast forward about 20 minutes), my bedroom as I drift off and away into sleep. Liz Harris has always made claustrophobic music. In fact, her albums are so memorable precisely because of this tension between the feedback-heavy reverb of her instrumentation and the sweetness of her vocals and melodies.
