Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Last time you caught Crystal Stilts , you probably remember them for a bit of angular fuzz pop, featuring Brad Hargett's throaty vocals, haunting every inch of Alight of Night . Then several members went on to make a bright bit of pop with Cinema Red and Blue, but now they've all returned to the fold. Despite their various whereabouts, the group have constructed In Love With Oblivion , possibly the darkest mark of [...]

Stream: Crystal Stilts- In Love With Oblivion Expect a review this week, for sure.

The Crystal Stilts , Brooklyn's very own 5 piece, are known for their fuzzy, distorted, reverby drones that slot perfectly into the properly crafted three-minute pop songs. Their emotional quasi-ambient feedbackscapes exists through frontman Brad Hargett's barely-there vocals, Keegan Cookes splashy drums, JB Townsends echoey guitar, Kyle Forester's spooky 60's psych organ and Andy Adler's thumping bass. Creating some of the most perfectly formed reconciliations of classic rock swagger and zoned dream-pop, Crystal Stilts found fame with their debut album Alight Of Night . Now, back with their follow up album In Love with Oblivion , JB [...]
Crystal Stilts remind me of a lot of bands: the Modern Lovers, the Velvet Underground, Television, and just about any other group in the East Coast echelon of cool. Their latest LP, Alight of Night , was an '08 favorite--and for good reason. The band has been a hot commodity since the LP's release, and their latest bit of media exposure is a Daytrotter session where they premiered two new tracks. Here are the goods: Crystal Stilts @ Daytrotter MP3: Crystal Stilts- "Love is a [...]

I've been wrestling with the whole year-end list thing since I saw them popping up in November. Some makes lists of 50. Others try 33. Twenty-five is always a good number. So is 20. I've decided to go with 10 (plus a few honorable mentions). And I'm pretty sure it isn't going to resemble yours. Or his. Or hers. Or theirs. That's probably a good thing. Click on the cover to buy the album. And let the civil discourse begin ... 10. Yes No Yes No Yes No [...]

"sigh." VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Crystal Stilts - Prismatic Room words: Jamie Milton Shame on you, big music publications. How dare most of you entirely ignore among many, Crystal Stilts. I wouldn't have minded had you placed Why? in your list , or if you'd placed Fleet Foxes a little higher , or if you'd not been complete morons and hadn't placed Kid Rock in your top 20 . MFM might be announcing a full [...]

There might not be a band out there with a sound as unaffected and nonchalant as Crystal Stilts. Even in the most fevered moments of the their new LP, Alight of Night , the band keeps a composure cooler than any arctic tundra. They're a band fit for the Titanic, because they'd really play until the ship sank. Crystal Stilts has a lot of easy-to-name influences, and their heavily reverbed sound is definitely a mainstay of the music, but good and simple pop songwriting is what ends up making this album so repeatable. [...]

It's interesting to think what kind of music Brad Hargett and JB Townsend would be making had they stayed in Florida. The two met there, moved to Brooklyn in 2002 and formed Crystal Stilts soon after. The band just released its first full-length Alight of Night last month-although it sounds like these guys spent some time at The Factory . It's chilly, dark and spacious but allows just enough sunlight to break through. Hargett sings with little change in inflection while Townsend strums jubilant chords and drummer [...]

The only "Crystal" I didn't see this year at CMJ was Crystal Stilts , the brooding band from Brooklyn with a penchant for lo-fi nostalgia. The band just released their debut LP Alight of Night , a moody collection of songs that transport you to those smoke-filled, heroin-tinged parties you see photos of in books about The Velvet Underground. The music seems perfectly tailored around Brad Hargett's deep, vintage voice. Organist Kyle Forrester (Ladybug Transistor) and drummer Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls) perfectly add to a sound that has been dubbed by one writer as "avant-garage". [...]

ALBUM: Crystal Stilts - Alight Of Night words: Jamie Milton Let die the petty comparisons that come with a new band with a bad mood and a bass-heavy, stripped down sound. I needn't mention the name of the act that's gotten cosy with the likes of Interpol, Snowden and Editors. They're also becoming a familiar face with Crystal Stilts, but that could be put to shame with 'Alight of Night' because with this album, we see glimpses of a new intelligence that divides them from the 80's contemporary, we see a glimpse [...]

Crystal Stilts, Alight Of Night (Slumberland, 2008) MP3 : "SinKing" In 08, "crystal" has become the new "wolf," and we have proof: First we had electro-zombies Crystal Castles exploding all over the Internets, getting in all sorts of trouble on tour across the nation, and even accusing Timbaland of stealing one of their beats. Then PFork introduced us to Crystal Antlers, a rough and tumble rock outfit who deliver aggressive sounds akin to Shellac, Les Savy Fav, and the Jesus Lizard - and [...]

no, this nothing to do with with crystal antlers (featured previously here ) or crystal castles (shall i feature it here?). neither has thing anything to do with devendra banhart 's cripple crow , as much as it rolls off your tongue the same way. instead, crystal stilts is a brooklyn band with as much in common with joy division and jamc as it has with 60s garage, mixing gloriously lo-fi shoegazer moods and atmospheres with glimpses of sunshine in between. in "cripple croon", you have that [...]
