NYTimes Arts & Leisure Weekend It's been a little while since I've written about the NYTimes Arts & Leisure Weekend (about a year I guess), but this coming weekend ( January 5-7, 2012 ) marks the return of the newspaper of record's annual gabfest. This schedule actually looks pretty enticing this year ( David Cross, Errol Morris, Kristen Wiig, Paul Feig and the venerable Clive Davis ), and if any of the shows aren't sold out, you can try the code NYTSUB to get [...]

With Christmas out of the way, and the year almost over, it's time I finally get around to compiling my Top 20 albums of the year of 2011 (in fact, there are 21 entries). Each album is represented on the mix with a song, and each entry has a link to the artist's homepage or other outlet where the album can be ordered from. Because this list is intended not only to show off my impeccable taste, but also to showcase artists, all data files in the mix have been downscaled to 128kbps. This is not really a chart, but [...]

The trouble with acoustic covers of popular songs is that some earnest singer armed with a guitar will slow down Jingle Bells and whisper the lyrics as if they have a deep meaning. I have no principles that compel me to disallow the notion of whispering songstresses, but on this Christmas mix I've tried to keep them to a respectful minimum. Still, we have the doses of yuletide angst which the acoustic genre prescribes to go with the upbeat welcome of the merry season. Don't be alarmed by the inclusion of three tracks called Christmas Song: they are [...]

Usually, not my style of music, but this IS a great song. Ms. Krauss is the most awarded singer, the most awarded female artist, and tied for the third most awarded artist overall in Grammy history. Pretty impressive resume. - Bill Ryan Alison Krauss - Baby, Now That I've Found You Click the image below to get more Allison Krauss through Amazon!

Andrea Simms-Karp is an indie roots powerhouse, drawing on folk, pop and classical vibes to create a sound both fresh and familiar. The Ottawa native grew up taking classical voice lessons, singing in choirs, and getting steeped in folk music. She's been stunning local audiences with her clear voice and unique musical style in live shows for over a decade. In 2004, the Ottawa Folk Festival recognized her talent by awarding her the Beth Ferguson Award for songwriting. With her debut album Sleeper, however, she garnered national attention. [...]
Somehow I got picked to write the Top 5 that drops on the first day of ACL (who makes these schedules, anyways?). The wonderful writers here at the ATH have already provided an abundance of great recommendations , interviews and previews that are better than anything I could ever do, so I'll talk about the only thing that hasn't been covered . Music with a kick of country. If you find yourself wandering near the Austin Ventures stage with some time to kill in-between the Brontosauras Flag [...]

A short post by Darius over at Star Maker Machine late last week rang a bell; I hadn't realized that Danny O'Keefe had both penned and first performed The Road , which most of us know well through its coverage on Jackson Browne's definitive album Running on Empty, but I did recognize his name from the songwriting credits for Well, Well, Well - a song often attributed to co-writer Bob Dylan alone, but first recorded by Maria Muldaur. Following the thread through the stacks, I found more than I bargained for: [...]

This show might seem a little odd for The Vinyl District. And you may not have the 70 bucks to go see it. But I get to pick the shows, so get over it. You may not like Alison Krauss, but there's no denying her incredible talent (don't even try, you pretentious punk). I mean, Krauss and co. in Union Station isn't really my bag either, but dude, I have to admit when I hear her voice and look at all the badass stuff she's done and accomplished I'm pretty blown away. I mean, twenty-six Grammys? Are you effing kidding [...]

Alison Krauss and Union Station w/ Jerry Douglas + Dawes @ Wolf Trap Foundation For Performing Arts - August 7 Words and Photos : Grace Beehler While most people clear out of major metropolitan areas during August, heading to large bodies of water to escape the brutal heat and humidity, some of those left behind showed up to Wolf Trap to see Alison Krauss and Union Station and Dawes. The sold-out show took place at the stunning architectural masterpiece that is Wolf Trap Foundation for Performing Arts, just outside Washington, D.C., on [...]

Alison Krauss and Union Station are on a tour across the US. Last Thursday, they played the Wang Theatre in Boston. Our photographer Jennifer Murtha ( FromThePhotoPit.com ) was there to get some cool shots of the group. Check them out inside.

Dawes - If I Wanted Someone Dawes' sophomore album Nothing is Wrong released back in June, and I was a huge supporter of the stunning lyrics and a 702s styled folk sensibility they displayed on the album. But one thing that is different about a Dawes album and a Dawes show is just how absolutely fantastic they truly are. The band has been touring relentlessly since they released the album and are stopping here in Boston tonight to open for the incomparable Alison Krauss. For those in the stands tonight that aren't aware of [...]
