A little like the optical illusion centred upon the visual dichotomy between the rabbit and the duck, the scatty, lo-fi work of Kamal Rasool's Flamingods may either be perceived as directionless lo-fi thuddery permeated periodically by wooded flute harmonies or as genuinely progressive, genre-banishing brilliance. Irrespective of whether you see a bill or a pair of ears, within the heavily percussive stuff to have already fallen out of their Soundcloud there's ample excellence to admire: from frantic piping and thumping of ethnic skins on Spirit Away Away to the mesmeric glitters and muffled vocal samples of [...]

Over the last few years HT faves Wilco have launched their own music festival, started their own label, played innovative tours in their hometown of Chicago and even sold their own brand of coffee, but the one thing that they haven't done, at least since 1999, is make a music video. That changed yesterday as Jeff Tweedy & Co. released a new animated video for the tune Dawned On Me, but this isn't your straight up clip. For their first video in over a decade the band teamed up with the folks at King Features for [...]

Irrespective of the continued entanglement of the various ones of the Dirty Three with a contemporary artistic conscience (paths have previously led to painting, Peej and Ally Pally ), their collective presence has been gravely missed. Six years, three months, and a further six days have passed since the release of Cinder, a nimble-fingered beast of gentle disposition, one capable of untangling the most obstinate of emotional knots and although perhaps not a direct consequence of their absence, times since they've been a-troublin'. However next month, quite fortuitously for anyone and everyone feeling fragile around [...]

British Sea Power once wasted elegiac stanzas on a rapport destined to be 'ended on an oily stage'. However, many wonderful musical happenings of a more positive nature have coincidentally occurred over the course of the past twelve months on stages small and large; sticky and pristine; smooth, sweaty, and indeed oily (for which see that of Tivoli de Helling above). Here's the deal: we'll run through our most enjoyable for reasons varied (and in some cases pretty well unknown), and you can reminisce or wish you'd been there in a more composed state of mind or rejoice in the [...]

Water cooler talk on the music tip started off this morning about another round of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees being announced and whether Axl Rose would make nice with Slash at the April... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
Back in the day, Greg Dulli's wailing soul-rock band the Afghan Whigs lent a much-needed air of sex and danger to an alt-rock era dominated by Seattle-style self-flagellating. The band broke up in 2001, but next year, they'll get back together to headline two big shows for All Tomorrow's Parties. Read More...
On the same day it was announced Greg Dulli would be reuniting his band The Afghan Whigs for shows at All Tomorrow's Parties in London and New Jersey in 2012 , Guided by Voices have announced they've broken up again. It was fun while it lasted, wasn't it? Before, what we'll call the inevitable dissolution of the "Classic" Guided by Voices lineup, we got one really long tour, one new album with a scheduled release date, another that's all but done, and a third that may or may not ever see the light of day. And things [...]

Lana del Rey/Lizzy Grant/whoever she's choosing to be contemporarily, the artificial product of anti-inspiration, may well be shuffling about, spluttering, and muttering calculatedly and choreographically if awkwardly in front of regurgitated Tumblr GIFs a few hundred metres down the road, yet exceedingly more cataclysmic furore is to unravel tonight up towards the anything but heavenly Angel, à la upstairs at The Lexington. More twisted and crazed than the minds of del Rey's coldblooded label dictators are Gentle Friendly , who trash out an almost constant, unabating stream of [...]
Ahead of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, Caribou has put together a mixtape of some of his favourite tracks to get you in the mood for the Nightmare Before Christmas party. The festival is to be curated by three artists: Les Savy Fav will curate Friday, Battles take Saturday and Caribou Sunday. Caribou's selection of tracks for this mix has been designed to showcase a lot of the artists chosen for his night. Among them are Toro Y Moi, Four Tet, Theo Parrish and Silver Apples. Also featured on the mix is a brand [...]

Last month, we reported that the version of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that the formerly reclusive Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum was curating had been postponed from a planned December date to a weekend in March. The festival, which will now go down 3/9-11 in Minehead, England, now has a lineup, and the ATP folks were not playing around with this one. The festival may be happening a little later than planned, but the lineup looks pretty sick. In addition to headliner Mangum, it also features Joanna Newsom, the Magnetic Fields, the Boredoms, Sebadoh, the Jon [...]

Tonight's a fairly special night for Calgary's BRAIDS , as it marks the remarkable quartet's final headline show in support of their truly spectacular debut record, Native Speaker. If this already sounds all too gushing, bear with me, for it was equally special merely to have crammed into Cowper Street's prime subterraneous haunt, XOYO. Prior to their deservedly heaving, hot as heck headline show, Secretly Canadian signings Exitmusic warm things up nicely, not that an increase in temperature within a room already at Amazonian humidity is altogether [...]
